WD40 is a poor moisture repellant. Surface moisture can actually become trapped between the film of WD40 and the metal. I've seen many firearms and fishing reels rusted after the owner thought they were protecting them with WD40. It also can make small screws and fittings loosen, which of course then causes the item to fail at the worst times!

Also, WD40's penetrating/dissolving qualities can cause problems with lots of adhesives.

For moisture repelling, a high-quality silicone lubricant is recommended. It will adhere to the metal, forcing the moisture to the surface and away from the metal. Of course, make sure you ddon't get any silicone on a surface you are trying to glue or epoxy something to (like a head or a grip).
