And speaking of putter and fitting, why is that every putter I stroke in the golf shop feels great and I can set and sink 20 footers one right after the other....but get the thing out onto the course and nothing goes in. I've always wondered if the shops slope the holes so that more balls roll in so that it convinces you that you need a new putter. If they do then smart on their part.

Well, the operative phrase here is "good clubmaker".

By good clubmaker, I don't mean the guy with his nametag written in erasable ink at the local "Clubs r Us". I'm talking about someone who came up working with persimmon drivers and who understands craftsmanship. The reason I mention persimmon is that all of the old wooden clubs from years ago had some type of insert glued into them (usually some type of phenolic resin) and that kind of clubmaker understands how to work with inserts. Many times, someone would want a different type of insert material installed in a driver, for example, and that material would range from other types of plastics, to a variety of metals and the clubmakers in those days could install just about anything.

So if you can find a guy like that near you, give him a call and tell him that you'd like to have the insert in your putter changed to something firmer than what you have in it now. I'm sure he could help you.
