Dr. Melvin, inventor of the Whippy TempoMaster clubs--and himself a long drive competitor, has studied this in detail. The training materials that come with a new Whippy contain several drills and instructions that make this point quite clearly. He says that ANY and ALL attempts to speed the clubhead with hand action is actually counter-productive. That slows the clubhead instead of speeding it. That is likely because hand/wrist action causes premature release--
This fact explains why long drive competitors train with the Whippy clubs. And the reason they gathered to have a Whippy driver contest. They work to eliminate hand action from their golf swings--so they can generate more clubhead speed at impact.
