Not really a gimmick in my opinion. My wife got me one for my birthday and you can definitely see progress in swing speed increase by using it. Although I question the accuracy of the one I got show my first full swing at 85 was a trip but in a week it now registers 110. I'm not so worried about overall accuracy but increasing the swing speed and it shows that. I'll probably go by Dick's and see if it reads the same. Two years ago I used theirs and checked in between 125-130 for max. After I made some swing changes my distance went down so I needed something I could work with to keep with the swing change but increase the speed back to max so that I can back down some without the great loss of distance and control.
