Regripping troubles.

My first atempt at regripping ended in tragedy today..the grip got stuck 4 inches down, and is not budging. As I figured, it is no where near as easy as people say it is. So, what do I do now? How can I take the grip to try again? Thanks to anyone who responds!

Are you using the two sided tape and solvent method?

Re: Regripping troubles.

When you put the solvent into the grip itself, squeeze in a generous amount. Don't fill the darn thing, but make sure you've got some lubrication in there. Put your thumb over the end and shake it in the grip so it covers the inside with solvent. Then pour it out over your 2 sided tape and shaft. This should lube everything up well enough to slip the grip right on. You probably got stingy on the solvent is all. It really is easy, give it another shot.

Re: Regripping troubles.

Is it a Winn grip?

If so, yeah, those can be difficult....as I say in every thread about gripping/grips/re-gripping.

But otherwise, they are indeed super-easy!

Re: Regripping troubles.

Yeah, I did get stingy..I tried it again, and poured most of the bottle on it, and it slid right on! Thanks guys, was pretty simple! I can't wait for it to dry, so I can test it out! I going to go buy more gips so I can do the rest of my clubs..I know my poor irons need it!

Re: Regripping troubles.

Most of the bottle?

Just put a tee in the butt end of the grip.
Fill the grip 1/3 w/ solvent.
Swish it wound so it coats the whole grip.
Then pour the solvent over the entire taped area of the shaft.

Oh, and be sure to remove the tee before sliding the grip on.

The bottle was almost empty..I didn't use an excessive amount, just enough to get the job done.

How do you know it was just the right amount?

And why was the bottle almost empty if this was your first time doing it and only your second grip? With your first grip not having enough solvent.

Re: Regripping troubles.

Here's a trick if you really are having problems and the regular solvant won't work (such as Winn type grips). Use lubricanting jelly. That's right, K-y jelly or similar generic will work great, and it evaporates in about ten minutes or so. Explaining to your spouse why you have a tube of it in your tool box may be another matter.

Re: Regripping troubles.

I simply use a spray bottle, and spary the inside of the grip (fits over the nozzle) about 6 times (in the spray not the stream setting). Then, I spray the tape, and then apply the grip. It works very well for me, and all I use is Winn Grips (as noted above can be a royal pain)

Glad to hear you got it figured out, once you get it down, it will be as easy as everyone has stated.

Re: Regripping troubles.

What is it about the Winn grips that makes them a pain in the butt to put on? I've not yet had the pleasure of fooling with them.

Also, i believe they are a multi-piece grip with an inner-lining.

Re: Regripping troubles.

Exactly. A multi layered grip, when sliding it on the top layer can separate from the bottom as you use enough force.

Or if you twist it too hard.

And if you put a Winn on a graphite driver or fairway metal, you better have the big butt grip installer.

Re: Regripping troubles.

Making sure the inside of the grip and the tape has been sprayed is very important. That is the reason for filling the grip and spraying the tape (as Chubbsco stated). You also have to keep inmind that the Winns are tighter then your average grip so when they run into a dry spot on the tape (usually underneath) you will have a problem forcing it on and you usually have about 10 seconds to do so. So with Winn Grips, I make sure I spray the inside of the grip and the tape well and use a good amount of force (quickly). Once you get the hang of it you won't have a problem anymore.

Uh, I was assuming you were smart enough to figure it out..the bottle was 1/2 empty I started..and I know it was the right amount, because it slid on..

Re: Regripping troubles.

Make sure the grips are warm, let them sit in the sun for a bit or under a shop light. This works well for the Winn grips. The others have covered the rest. Make sure you use a tray under your gripping station or vice, you can re-use the solvent.
