Re: Graphite +1 1/2" = Steel +2"?
If you want them the same length, yes it would be ideal to go +2" in steel although most companies will only go to +1-1.5" due to swing weight concerns.

Re: Graphite +1 1/2" = Steel +2"?
There is no one set std. length that is ubiquitous between equipment manufacturers. If you are going to get your irons reshafted or go to a clubmaker for any reason, we need to dump this graphite vs. steel vernacular. OEMs manufacture their graphite irons +1/2" longer than steel because of swingweight issues. This is in the best interest of their company and not the player. Most competent clubmakers will agree that this is borderline insanity. Clublength is every bit important, and then some, as swingweight when fitting a player. Clubs built by clubmaker are built to the length that best fits you....it makes no different if they are graphite shafted or not. Again, it is not financially beneficial for OEMs to manufacture more than one line of heads to keep a static length between steel and graphite.
We really need to find out exactly what length you were fitted to. Normally the 5-Iron length is measured and reported. +1 1/2" graphite or steel just isn't as interesting as an actual number. The length that fits you best is the same number whether we are talking steel or graphite. So to answer your original question, if we assume steel shafted clubs are -1/2", the answer would be yes! If you find a length you are comfortable with you should try to stick with it if at all possible. However, sw is an issue. This is where a fitting session would definitely come in handy. A clubmaker will assess your current set and try his best to duplicate it with your new set as much as possible. |

Re: Graphite +1 1/2" = Steel +2"?
First of all, thank you for all the feedback. Before I go and reshaft I sent a demo 6 iron to the clubmaker to put in the True Temper GS 75 shaft which is practically the same weight as my current shafts, the UST RV2 75 Gold Iron Shaft. I will wait to get that club back and test it out for some time before I make the switch.
