I spent Saturday afternoon regripping clubs...

... I developed an intense dislike for grip tape. Gosh-awful stuff is a real pain in the neck to get off the shaft.

On the other hand, I love putting the new grips on the clubs. Slip the grip over the end of the shaft, stick the air compressor nozzle through the hole, give it a burst of air, and on it slides!

Plus, next time I have to replace the grips there will be no annoying grip tape to deal with.

I never tried an air compressor even though I've changed my own grips for 20 years now. I'll have to give it a go!

You should. I spent two hours scraping all the old tape off of the shafts of eleven clubs (some of those clubs had some really, really sticky gunky tape on 'em), and then fifteen minutes blowing the new grips on the same eleven clubs.

Re: I spent Saturday afternoon regripping clubs...

I usually just blow the grips over the old tape because its so annoying to get the shafts perfectly clean. If the old tape is still sticky, you just need a little more mineral spirits in the grip and it will blow on clean.

Re: I spent Saturday afternoon regripping clubs...

I don't normally have much problem getting the old tape off. I normally use a hair dryer and make sure the tape is pretty dried out and then find a corner of the old tape and begin taking it off. Usually comes off in one big piece but some are more stubborn. A normal hair driver works pretty well, but they make those industrial strength ones (not really hair dryers...I don't know what you use them for) at Lowes that really drys the old tape out and it's much easier to pull off.

I've never tried using compressed air to blow the grips on. Without any adhesive, wouldn't the grips slide around?

Good idea. I never thought of drying out the tape before removing it. I'll try that next time I encounter some particularly difficult tape.

As for grips blown on without grip tape, I've never had any problem with them sliding around. As long as you have the proper core diameter to fit the shaft you're gripping (i.e., .580 grip for .580 shaft butt diameter, .600 grip for .600 shaft butt diameter), there seems to be plenty of friction between the grip and the shaft to keep it solidly in place.

Exactly...

BTW, when you use a heat gun or a hair dryer on old tape, its not to dry the old tape, its to heat it which makes it easier to remove the adhesiveness.

Cosine: Yeah, what he said above. lol. I used to fight with the old tape until I saw a guy at a golf store using the heat gun (couldn't think of what it was called earlier...I know, heat gun is a really hard two words to remember) and I assumed it was to dry the old tape out really good but I stand corrected. Either way it works.

Pick-it-up: How do you do it without removing the old tape? I tried that once and couldn't stand it so I had to redo all of the grips. The grips just felt so much bigger in my hands. Before I learned to regrip myself I had a golf store regrip a club for me and I specifically told them to take the old tape off, but I get it and it feels like I'm holding a baseball bat. After I asked they told me they took the old off, but sure enough, they left it on after I had them verify it. lol

I put on a very small amount of new tape. And I wrap it in the areas which do not already have tape. Now if it's the tape sheets (strips), then I remove it. But since I use rolls of tape, it works out perfectly.

I see. I guess I use the "strips". My tape comes in a roll but I measure and cut individual strips off of the roll that are each about the length of the grip.

Re: I spent Saturday afternoon regripping clubs...

I have had grips move when using a compressor. I've been using some grips with special allignment markings on them (Home) and having them move is not good. I now use double sided tape and spray on a bit of solvent with an ajax bottle. I still blow on my plain black grips, but having a proplay grip move gave me a bit of a scare!

Re: I spent Saturday afternoon regripping clubs...

I left my old tape on and put a new one over it...midsize grips with 2 wraps.

But, I saw a tool at Golf Galaxy if you want help taking old tape off....it looks like a curved chisel that wraps around the shaft and peels the tape off.

I usualy heat mine up with a propane torch and they usually come off in one piece as well. When usuing a compressor to put on your grips how do you line up the marks on the grip with the club face or do you line them up at all?

You line them up the same way as when you put them on the olf way. Club in vice, face straight up, markings on top.

I use a heat gun to help get the tape off. Works much better than just plain old fingernails.

Re: I spent Saturday afternoon regripping clubs...

Anyone have a video of regripping with air? I have a compressor, but I'm having trouble picturing this.

I usually scrape the old glue off with a razor knife, back and forth pretty fast, then wipe the shaft with laquer thinner. Comes off pretty easy.

There's nothing to it, just don't go wide open on the air when removing! Small spurts work well

Well, I might have been able to save that nice fat Winn putter grip I boogered up last summer if I had owned an air compressor!
