Club length vs Player Height

While some club fitting charts use wrist to floor measurement only, some take into account height. But I noticed something wierd on the chart I'm using, and some others I've seen.... the club seems to get shorter as the player gets taller! So someone whos 5'10" with a 34" wrist to floor has a longer club that someone who's 6'3" with a 34" wrist to floor.

Here are a couple of examples...

What's with that? Can anybody explain this to me?

That's what I thought until I found another chart that was slightly different (ie: not copied), but with the same scenario. That's why I included two examples.

My own personal thinking is that maybe a tall player with a 34" wrist to floor has longer arms than a shorter player with the same measurement. Therefore the shorter player with the shorter arms may need a fraction more length to increase distance, and the taller player with the longer arms may need more control, cos he's so 'gangly'.

Just a theory.

Here's another one!

Golf Shaft Length

and another!!!

Left Hand Golf Clubs in Houston, Texas

...but this Callaway one goes the other way...

Callaway Golf Pre-Owned & Outlet Official Site: Used Golf Clubs, Drivers, Fairway Woods, Iron Sets, Individual Irons, Wedges, Putters, Juniors

...as does the Ping webfit system. Boy am I confused. Maybe I'll just leave height out of the equation.

Maybe..but wouldn't the taller person's height, level things out? He would still need the longer club, I'd think..My cousin is 6'3", and he hunches over 90*, holding one of my clubs..

My wrist to floor measurement is about 32". I'm 5'7". So if the taller people had arms as short as mine are..then I would imagine that they would need a longer shaft. If you look at those charts, everything is uniform until you look at the shorter arms lengths, with the taller people..so I guess with the dude who is 6'4", but has arms 32"(That would make him part T-rex, right?), then the shaft would need to be longer for him to grasp it properly..so the numbers should go up, not down..so I am stumped about this..

I think that solves it..

Re: Club length vs Player Height

^^The error in your theory is that you're thinking 32" is the players arm length. It isn't, it's the distance between his wrist and the floor. So the lower that measurement, the longer his arms are, that is, they are closer to the ground.

So a taller person with a 32" wrist to floor measurement actually has longer arms than a shorter person with the same measurement. This would possibly explain their need for a slightly shorter club, although I don't really know.

I have now found three completely different charts that follow this pattern, but two that are the opposite. Wierd.

Re: Club length vs Player Height

Apparently there are different schools of thought on this. I’m 6’ 9” tall and my WTF measures at 40”. The first iron set I was fitted for years ago was built +1.5” and 4* upright. My current set (fitted by a different pro) is +1” 2* up.

Re: Club length vs Player Height

It all makes it very difficult to decide what length someone should have, it depends on who you ask. I'm thinking maybe the safest bet is to go by Wrist To Floor measurement only and leave height out of the equation all together - as some do.

This can be true. You see it in boxers where a much taller guy has shorter arms that a guy the same size or smaller. The shorter the arms, the longer the club needs to be, provided one doesn't alter their normal stance at address. The average person is supposed to have an arm span equal to their heigth but some may have narrower shoulders and longer arms or wider shoulder and shorter arms. Some just aren't normal, period. A persons natural stance and swing also determines the length and lie of the club. A flatter swinger may need longer shafts and a negative lie angle opposed to an upright swinger that may need a shorter shaft and a + lie angle.

Yeah, I know that..what did I say? Arm length? Oops, yeah I messed up on that. lol. Must've had something on my mind..
oh yes, Jessica Alba..she always messes up my thought..see, she did it again!

I think Coralpro nailed it..I didn't think about shoulder width, andswing plane..but why would they list it that way? Not everyone is built like that..it always gets me how these online fitters can possibly know what'a best for you. I was fitted by a real, human being, and I couldn't be happier!

Online fitters can only ball park to get someone perhaps close enough because they use the WTF measurement but the real surefire way is to go to a knowledgable pro or a good clubfitter and have them check your swing and see if it needs fitting and what type of adjustments properly fit the swing style as well. I asked two different pros here and they said off the shelf was fine for me and I'm 6'3".
