Attempted to put together my first wedge

Well I trimmed the shaft tip and sanded it down. So then I got to use the epoxy that comes with Golfsmith's clubmaker kit. I figure I will use the tip they in their videos. Rub a little epoxy on the ferrule head, slide it on the shaft, press the shaft/ferrule against the ground or surface and make it go up the shaft then use the club head to push it down to its set position. 2 problems. First I got the ferrule on the shaft pushed it down, but it was flush with the shaft tip. I tried to push it down with the head and it wouldn't budge. Second, that epoxy absolutely ******. Why in the heck would you pack 3-5 minute drying epoxy in a beginner pack? First when I was mixing it the epoxy looked like it was dissappearing into the cardboard. So then I went to the garage for one minute, came back, and the epoxy was already hard...horrible.

So now I am stuck with my shaft tipped, abbraded, one ferrule left, and no epoxy.

Re: Attempted to put together my first wedge

That stinks. That's pretty dumb of them to put quick set in a beginner kit.

I just reshafted my irons with the stuff from golfworks and it worked great. It took atleast an hour to set so I had plenty of time to get things right. I had to give them 24 hours to fully cure but it was worth the wait for the ease of use and it will also create a stronger bond. HIGH-STRENGTH EPOXY

Re: Attempted to put together my first wedge

I would normally just send stuff on over to Christian, but I was bored one day and figured I would take a crack at it.

Why was my first post edited? I can't say "******" as in "that epoxy ******"?

Here is our language policy. That word, along with others has been edited for consistency since our inception. Nothing personal, and I'm sure the epoxy did ****.

Good luck with the new epoxy, and your second attempt at clubmaking.

Re: Attempted to put together my first wedge

Sorry to hear what happened. Just curious; how have you mixed the glue?

Like BrianS, I use GolfWorks' epoxy. A little longer wait but always worth it. GolfWorks carries many kind of ferrules too.

Re: Attempted to put together my first wedge

Couple of tips for future reference. 1st is a biggie -- dry fit everything. This will help you anticipate any snags, like a ferrule that is too snug. You can sand, or rough up, the interior of the ferrule which helps with adhesion and will increase its diameter slightly to fit better on the shaft. 2nd, also a biggie -- when in doubt use heat. If you simply zap the ferrule for a bit with a hair dryer or heat gun, they are much more pliable and will behave themselves. Heat is used when removing ferrules, saving ferrules and installing ferrules when they are snug. It only takes a few repetitions to get your skills honed enough where you can avoid little headaches like this.

Re: Attempted to put together my first wedge

I went and got some Golfworks epoxy and it works much better. I had no problems with the ferrule that second time around. The wedge came out great and it is now in my buddy's posession.

Today I finished a Dynacraft Avatar 3 & 5 wood. These came out really great. These are for me! Can't wait to play them on Sunday.
