Reshafting bore thru irons
Ive reshafted clubs before, but never a bore thru club. I wanted to try some forged blades this year without breaking the bank so I bought some old wilson staff Fluid Feel irons on Ebay and I would like to reshaft them with DG S300's. Does anyone have any helpful tips for doing this type of re-shafting job?

Re: Reshafting bore thru irons
You need parallel tip shafts, most likely. All bore throughs that I have done required those. So you then need to tip trim each shaft for the specific iron that it goes in. Then if they are a little tight (Callaway usually is) you need to cut a groove into each tip, one or two cuts will result in either two or four cuts into the tip. You then need to get plugs for the tip of the shaft.

Re: Reshafting bore thru irons
Reshafting the wilson irons presents a problem not found in current clubs.
One- the shafts are taper tip shaft not Parallel two - the tip that went into fluid feels may no longer be in production. I beleive they might be a .277 tip or something very close. three - if they do take a taper tip, matching frequencies is not possible, you are stuck with the shaft you bought unless you purchased a lot of product. If these clubs are in good condition it may be better to keep them original |

Re: Reshafting bore thru irons
As a collector of old Wilson staff clubs, I have 35 sets, all the top of the line clubs by Wilson Staff have .355 taper tip. The tight fit is usually due to the hosel being bent, either for a loft and lie adjustment, or through normal use. If you are going to reshaft having a .355 tapered reamer is a helpful tool.
Which model did you purchase? |

Lurking on this site and reading some of the posts by you and others is what prompted me to buy/try some old blades........... we'll see how the experiment goes when the weather warms up. Is this the correct tool? http://www.golfsmith.com/products/838B Last edited by jt0531 : 02-10-2007 at 06:17 PM. |

Re: Reshafting bore thru irons
If I can't hit em they're going to the Salvation Army, not a rechroming shop......lol
Just from looking at these clubs re-shafting them and hitting a few 8 irons into a net in my basement the offset oversized clubs I was playing with before look ridiculous. |

Re: Reshafting bore thru irons
So I got the fluid feel irons in the mail today. they are in really nice shape, but does anyone know where I can get some of the red hosel plugs to replace the originals when I do the re-shaft?

Re: Reshafting bore thru irons
Well, I finished reshafting these clubs and there were a few things different from what I had read about re-shafting bore thru irons.
First, these were indeed .355 taper tips, although the hosel is threaded (whis seems like a great idea to give the epoxy a better bond) and the fit was a bit tighter than with my titleist irons. Second, I didn't need to tip trim the shaft to the angle of the hosel because the shaft only sets in about 1 1/4 inches even though the shaft is bored thru. (The originals came out this way so I put the new ones in the same way) Third, I couldn't find the red hosel plugs anywhere so this is what I did..... I mixed 5 minute epoxy and put a small amount of red paint in it. Then I put it in the hosel, taped up the hole, let it dry, and cleaned it up with a polising wheel on my dremel........ looks identical to what came out (I only needed to do this one 1 club. So far so good, I used the clubs at the range yesterday and they felt great.......... and none of the heads flew off. Thanks everyone for your help. Last edited by jt0531 : 02-18-2007 at 12:20 PM. |
