Re: Callaway FT-I

This club was simply amazing, and the look didn't put me off. In fact, I actually liked it. Compared to the Sumo 2 it looks VERY small. I could put an easy swing or a hard swing on it, and I got pretty much the same results. The feel is excellent, and the it didn't sound much different than a normally shaped driver. The shaft is quite long, but I believe the new technology balances that out and all my shots were near perfectly straight. 3 thumbs up!

Re: Callaway FT-I

This club does a great job of doing what it advertises, long and straight. The longer shaft helps increase club head speed while the increased MOI helps to provide stability so you can get away with missing the sweet spot a bit. Sounds far better than the SuMo2 in my opinion.

Re: Callaway FT-I

It WAS better than the Sumo 2. I tried both, and the Sumo 2 just sounded so loud and horrible that it was really difficult to like it. The feel was a bit harsh, and it seriously looked like a mailbox on a stick. Just not my thing, I guess. The FT-i was the opposite of all those things. The only unfortunate part is that its $500 bucks retail and going for near the same on ebay. Guess I'll have to wait a while for the prices to drop.

Re: Callaway FT-I

I've got 72 holes in with my SUMO2 and LUV it!!!

.....but with that said, I played 18 last Sunday with an FT-i and was REALLY impressed!!! I'm a 6 handicap and have never been a "worker" of the ball, just straight is all I ever want, and the FT-i is like shooting a rifle with a scope...just line-up the crosshairs and that's where your going!!!

Did you like it more than your Sumo 2?

Re: Callaway FT-I

Got the FTi today. Hit a bucket of balls at the range, and hopefully get to hit the course tomorrow (was still closed today with too much snow left from last week's storm, but melting fast). Liked what I've seen so far... further reports to follow.

Re: Callaway FT-I

Hit 7 of 10 fairways with this wonderful driver today. the other 4 "driving" holes I don't use driver on. As a sample of the improvement... with the R7 that I traded in on the FTi, I never hit a fairway. Not once in 63 holes (3-1/2 rounds) of golf. There is no comparison. Better feel, and much better results. I think that anyone struggling to get off the tee should try it. Don't worry about how ugly the club is, just think about how pretty your shots are...

Just read a test carried out by golf mag using 100 readers and tour pros using the Some sq and the FTi. Result around 70% drove the ball straighter and 87% drove the ball longer. It seems that the Sumo is longer but has a bigger dispersion.

Re: Callaway FT-I

It seems that the Sumo2 is much more popular than the FT-i. Probably because of the commercials...

Funny, my shop has placed three times as many orders for the FTi than for the SuMo Square.

Really? I'm surprised. The people on the forum seem to be much more excited about the Sumo2; take a look at its review thread. It could be because of its earlier release date, though.

Re: Callaway FT-I

When I bought my FTi at Golfsmith, the sales guy said that they can hardly give away the Sumo 2, but the Callaway is selling well. All it takes is hearing the difference in sound between the two clubs... the FTi looks better too. The plain black finish makes it look significantly smaller and somewhat more traditional than the Nike.

Re: Callaway FT-I

I have to agree. The Ft-i is a very accurate club, and is much better than the Nike.
I can even stomach the gut wrenching looks, as this thing performs beautifully. I got more distance than the Sumo 2.

Re: Callaway FT-I

More fun with the FTi. Played in the first Men's Club tournament today... 5 man scramble with players from "A" to "E" skills (our team had handicaps from 6 to 29, with me in the middle at 14.7). I was generally out-driving the "A" player, half my age and twice my clubhead speed... Granted he was having an off day, but I think I was stirring up some interest in the club before the round was over. Conditions were brutal, with 30+ mph winds and 50° temps, and even into that gale I was getting 220 yards of carry. On a couple of the downwind holes, I hit it over 300 yards without any effort at all.

I still love this driver....

Re: Callaway FT-I

I really can't say enough about this driver. I was sold the first time I hit it at a Demo Day. Some shots I hit, I look up expecting to see the ball slicing violently into the trees, but instead see a 5 yard fade. Now thats a great feeling . I get the same if not more distance than my X-460, and the FT-i is 20x straighter . It produces such a beautiful penetrating ball flight that rolls forever. I've played a whole round with the Sumo 2 and wasnt impressed with it at all. No feel, horrific looks and sound, and unpredictable ball flight. It wasn't EVEN CLOSE to how straight my FT-i is. The FT-i has changed my game. My Handicap is certainly going to drop now that I can hit 7 irons from THE FAIRWAY to greens! Wow, hitting fairways, what a concept! Now if I could only figure out this putting thing . Great job Callaway. This stick is WELL WORTH THE PRICE TAG. (btw I did trade in a set of irons and a driver to lessen the blow on my wallet

Re: Callaway FT-I

Just wanted to say I finally hit this driver at demo day yesterday and was very impressed. I've never been much of a Callaway fan as other stuff has always performed better for me. I didn't enjoy the FT-5 but this driver was LONG and impressive and the sound wasn't nearly as bad as the Nike.

I really was impressed by the distance and the ball flight. I was crushing it with no problem and the Callaway rep even took notice. I'd say it was another 15 yards longer than my R5 and just about even with the superquad which was my favorite driver of the day. I'd really need to get hooked up to the computer and see which is the best but I will most certainly keep this baby in mind.

I'm stickin with the R5 though, too much confidence in the club to give up on it
