Steel shafts, how much does flex matter

Just curious what everyone's opinions were. Here's why I ask. I have three sets of irons: Ping ISI's with regular flex, MP-60's with DG S300's (stiff) and a set of MP-33's with Rifle 6.5's(x-stiff - rebar). Distance wise they're all exactly the same, 7 iron 150. Trajectory-same. The only difference I can feel is with the R-Flex ping, I can feel it load and unload whereas the others I can't. So what does flex actually do in an iron shaft?

Just that. It should help you get the most out of your irons, when swinging. The load you feel, is where the club bends slightly, theat provides more power, on the downswing. If you can't feel it load, then you need a lees stiff shaft.

I think actually i KNOW it matters a bunch but an s300 is really close to a rifle 6.5 so you won't notice too much difference between those too....I bet you spin the r flex more, but its in SUCH a different head, it might be hard to tell....the PING ISI is such a different club than mp-33's

Go to GS, and get on the monitor, that should tell you everything.

Just make sure you are testing the same head too!

Re: Steel shafts, how much does flex matter

Thanks, guess I'll re-shaft a few of the 33's and see what happens. I do like the smoother feel of the R-flex in the ISI's, but don't want to give up any accuracy (don't have much to spare here) so will give it a try and see what happens.

S300's are 5.8 on the rifle scale.

X100's are closer to the rifle 6.5's, but still not quite as stiff. The 6.5's are very stout.

Re: Steel shafts, how much does flex matter

Is this the same LyleG from over on ST? I was reading a thread that you were in on talking about switching shaft flexes that got me started on this. Yep those 6.5's are harsh in a set of MP-33's for a guy that hits a 7 iron mear 150 so am looking to re-shaft 'em in a DG R3 or 400. Funny, but like I said in the original post, left and right and distance all seem to be the same, just looking for a little better feel in the flex.

Re: Steel shafts, how much does flex matter

Just out of curiousity, what exactly is 'uniflex' when it comes to a steel shaft?

My 5 wood that I use in lieu of my 3 iron is a steel shaft, a Callaway Steelhead III with a 'uniflex' shaft. Is that just another word for 'regular'? It feels that way to me.

Hey Spoke, Everything I've ever read said your exactly right, supposed to be between a regular and a stiff flex. PS, I've PM'd ya on another matter.
