Seems there is no standard!

I was looking at the standard lie of various manufacturers and was surprised to see there is no standard.

Take a six iron, titleist's standard is 62.5 degrees but Mizuno's is 61, a very big diffence of 1.5 degrees. With all the other OEMs varying by 0.5 to 1.5 degrees also. Some are even different from model to model within the same OEM!

Why is there not a standard that all OEMs follow?

I was custom fitted for some titleist DCI's several years ago and was pleased to realise I was standard everything, buying clubs in the future would be easy, just get the standards I thought. but now I realise that standard is only standard within each OEM (and then not allways).

So if I want some new irons on the cheap (ebay) i'll have to buy titleist or get some forged and have them adjusted.

How much can forged clubs be altered, what is a sensible amount?

I think it is 2* and can only be done 2 or 3 times before it starts to soften up.

Re: Seems there is no standard!

Just contact the manufacturer as they all have different standards. My nike forged blades were able to be adjusted atleast 3* the rep told me.

I had a friend that bent a 690 6 degrees by accident and then back with no adverse effects.

Their is no standard in irons because each set is made for a specific reason. If one set is made to give you a lower launch then that company will move the weight too be more center/low and adjust the lofts and lies according to what they are trying to accomplish.

If a company wants to offer a more forgiving iron then that will offer more weight in the cavity and adjust the loft and lie to offer a higher launch with more directional spin.

Hope this helps

Re: Seems there is no standard!

Thanks peeps.

I've got my eye on some hogan FTXs on ebay. I'll try and get them and see if Hogans standard suits me. If not it will probably only take about 1 degree of adjustment. Sorted.

Re: Seems there is no standard!

Kinda a moot point in that if one is at the point in their golfing career that forged clubs make sense, so does custom fitting, at least so much as whacking a few on a lie board and tweaking the clubs to suit...
