Do I need less offset?

I've been improving alot lately. I'm a 20 handicap, but a couple of months ago I was a 25.

I hit my driver and most of my woods pretty straight. I've traditionally fought a slice, but now it's either dead straight or with a very slight fade. Never a draw or a hook. On my really bad drives I may hit a pull or a slice.

With that in mind, it seems odd that I've started hooking my irons, or at least playing a strong draw. They will oftem start out straight at the flag and then curve well left at the end.

I have been striking my irons really solidly since I beat the shank I was fighting. But this hook is the result.

My Innovex RLS irons have a fair bit of offset I guess. I really like them, they have a great feel, but do they have too much offset for me? It seems wierd that I hook them when I don't hook my Driver, the club that's supposed to accentuate faults.

Should a 20 handicapper even contemplate irons with no offset?

Re: Do I need less offset?

You just need to try them out to see how you like them.

maybe try something with LESS offset first.

I've never played clubs w/ offset....even when I was just starting.

Re: Do I need less offset?

Check to see if the lie angle is correct for your swing.

Re: Do I need less offset?

yea the lie angle could be different then what your swing needs now. Since your swing has gotten better, you might of changed the angle or path you hit the ground.

But as a 20 handicap I don't think you should go to no offset. I wouldn't even mess with a medium offset.

Without seeing your swing and impact tape, I would say go 1* flatter on your irons and that should straigten you out.

im sorry for the totally noobish question, but can someone explain what offset is and how it affects a game in either too much offset or too little?

Re: Do I need less offset?

The distance from the frontmost part of the hosel to the frontmost part of the clubhead. At address, the shaft of an offset club will appear to be in front of the clubhead. Because it is. Offset may be found in any club. Many putters have offset to help the golfer have his or her hands ahead of the ball at impact. Offset drivers and irons can be helpful to players who slice.

found out what it meant..

Re: Do I need less offset?

I agree with the people who suggested having your lie angle checked. As your swing has developed, you may have changed the way that you deliver the club head to the impact position. If the lie is too upright, it will lend itself to hitting a draw/hook.

Re: Do I need less offset?

Yeah, get your lie checked...I can't help you with offset, never had a club with it..also consider getting a few lessons, I could be that your releasing the club too early, or other simple mistakes!
