Staff Bag or Stand bag?

I'm looking for a new golf bag so the question is?

Do I buy a Ping staff bag for $219.00 or a Ping hoofer for $169.00?

Both bag have a plus and a minus.

So if you had to do what would you get?

You're sending mixed messages here.

Do you want a bag to walk with or do you want a cart bag?

A staff bag is not a walking bag. I know that they're much lighter today than they used to be years ago when they were all made of leather, but they're just too big to use as a"carry bag". Believe it or not, I used to walk once in a while with a staff bag (leather) a long time ago, but that doesn't really work very well just from a sheer-size point of view. A decent staff bag has a 10-inch top and more pockets than a shoplifter's jacket making them quite bulky. And human nature will have you putting whatever you can think of into those pockets (whether you need to or not) and you'll end up lugging 40 to 50 lbs. of junk before you know it.

A typical stand bag, when empty, weighs about as much as a couple of pairs of socks, and even with as many pockets as most of them have now, there's just not enough room for so much junk that would create any significant weight issues.

Staff bags are cool, but unless you use a caddy or a cart on a regular basis, I wouldn't bother with one; they're just too klutzy. They DO have a ton of room for your clubs, but also for a lot of other things and all that storage will ultimately produce a bag that's way too heavy to carry on a daily basis.

If you're really into walking and carrying, put your ego on hold and go with the stand bag. Your back, your legs, your shoulders and ultimately your game will thank you for it.

Here's mine:

And this one's only $129.99 at Golfsmith

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

I'd go with the Hoofer. That's what I've got and that's what I've always had. Just convenient to take to the range or practice green and don't have to worry about it falling over. I really can't see anyone outside of professional golfers having a true need for a staff bag. Maybe a cart bag, but not a staff bag. Just to big if you ask me, but to each their own.

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

I have a cart bag and a stand bag. I got the cart bag first, and after realizing that I don't take a cart every round, I decided to get the stand bag and haven't used it since. This is just my opinion, but if I couldn't handle a cart bag, I definitely couldn't handle a staff bag. I like being able to carry my bag or put it on the stand without lying it down. Even though I've seen caddy's have the backpack straps on the staff bags, it'd still be too large and heavy for what I need a bag to be. I've had my R7 stand bag for about a year and love it.

Get both! I ride more than I walk now, so I use my staff bag, but I have both just incase I fly I don't have a travel case big enough for my staff bag!

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

Initially I would have to go with the carry bag. Much more convenient for trips to the range and doesn't take up much room in the trunk of the car.

But later on you might entertain the thought of getting a staff bag as well. They're great for golf trips (as long as you have the stowage room in the vehicle). I like being able to have my wet weather gear, extra balls, extra pair of socks, etc. stored in the bag without having to worry about packing that stuff each morning. And even though you have all those things packed away in the bag, there's no hassle pulling clubs or putting them back in. That is a major pet peeve of mine.

I use my staff bag maybe a dozen times each season. In that regard, it's kinda pointless to buy one unless you're gonna use it more. But it comes in handy for those golf trips.

And the best time to buy those staff bags is in January, when you can get some sweet discounts so the retailers can make room for the new stuff coming out.

But if you have to go with one or the other, the carry bag.

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

I've got a staff b/c I never walk. However, it's not one those huge tour bags and it's actually pretty light and it's very well balanced so if I did wanna walk, it wouldn't be too heavy. I like all the room for the clubs in the bigger bag.

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

You never said whether you walk, ride a cart , or use a hand cart when you play. That would be the first thing I'd look at before I'd recommend any bag to you. I had a 10.5" tour staff bag. I sold it because it weighs 16 pounds empty, and I neve ride a cart, so the idea of using it made no sense to me. Way toooooo Big and heavy. I might have kept it to use with my push cart, but it was too big to fit my cart, so I sold it and I use a Great Divider 3 wheeler cart, designed just for push cart use. Much lighter and it works great.

Sorry I do both. But I'm sure the Ping staff is not far behind

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

I own the Ogio Grom bag. It works great for both walking or riding. It has a torq strap which holds it in place on the cart and keeps it from twisting & sliding like most stand bags do on a cart. I also like the woode top for club organization. It has a ton of storage space as well.

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

I own both staff and stand bags, but I really prefer a stand bag - I can use it either walking or on a cart, but really wouldn't want to carry around a staff bag if I was walking.

For versatility if nothing else, I'd go with the stand bag.

Re: Staff Bag or Stand bag?

Stand Bag. Ogio Vaporlite. Love the ball silo, very comfortable and easy on the shoulders, cell phone and sunglass pocket. Great bag. Kinda pricey, though.
