Re: The 60 degree wedge
Most 60* lob wedges come with less bounce than that, more like 8* or less. For tie lies or firm bunkers, less bounce will help. From soft sand or thick lies, the 12* bounce should work fine.

Re: The 60 degree wedge
I have a similar bounce. I don't use it on tight lies.

Re: The 60 degree wedge
I have one with 4* and one with 3* and the bounce on both is too much...looking to grind them, just haven't gotten around to it...

Re: The 60 degree wedge
You need to get over whatever your issue with me is today - what I posted was in no way addressed to you or anything you said.
To the OP, if you know how to use the bounce correctly, you can hit pitch shots off a parking lot with 12 degrees of bounce. Check out a book called The Art of the Short Game, by Stan Utley. Excellent book. |

Re: The 60 degree wedge
.
You know, for all of the years in which I played my best golf, the only wedges I ever carried were a Pitching Wedge and a Sand Wedge. But then I started carrying multiple wedges and that's when everything went all screwy in the short-pitch area of my game. I think that I'm going to go back to my old setup; take the 55 and the 60 out of the bag, put the 2-iron back in and leave it at that. I mean, the rest of my game is pretty much the same as it was "back-in-the-day", and at what point did it become mandatory to carry a whole squadron of wedges anyway? I guess I got "marketed" like everyone else, but I think the drugs have finally worn off and I can see the essential silliness of all of this. Maybe the pro's have found a valid reason for carrying all this extra iron but for the life of me, I can't figure out why I need all these extra wedges. This game was much simpler and much easier with just two wedges and I want it to be simple and easy again. -JP

Re: The 60 degree wedge
I'm a die hard 60 degree wedge player. I've had one in my bag since 1990 and it's the best club in my bag. I wear them out fast...and usually replace it every 10-12 months.
I rarely see one in the shops that has less than 8 degrees bounce, but I personally don't have any problem with it from tight fairways...and it's just the right bounce from fluffy sand. It's the only wedge I use from 70 yards and in. Everywhere around the green, flop shots etc. etc. They're not for everyone, but it's a club that needs a lot of practice. I'd be lost without one. As for the "Multi-Wedge" fad...I carry 3 right now (47,52,60) and I did have a 56 in there for a while too. All of the wedges I carry serve my game, so I keep them, but if you play better with a PW & SW...then rock em. Last edited by ringin : 06-02-2008 at 07:09 PM. |

Re: The 60 degree wedge
In the dry season here the fairways get cut short, the ground so hard it cracks and the parking lot might be softer...the low bounce that I have on these keeps them out of the bag in the wet season (read: marsh), but now that it is drying out, I can't hit that forward 60* pitch and am restricted to playing the ball back...would like to try grinding all the bounce off of one and see how it plays...conditions that I am under for the next six months really need very little bounce and I think that a little versatility could be gained with less bounce...
And settle down MR.!!!! ![]()

Re: The 60 degree wedge
All very interesting reply's, thanks for them. I'm thinking about keeping it in the bag for now (the 60-12) just to see how much I use it and do I play better with it. To do this I'll have to loose a club...I'm thinking 3 hybrid. Leaves me with Driver, 4 wood, 4 hybrid and then 4 iron on down to PW, 52 degree (100 yds for me), 56 degree (85) 60(not sure yet. The 12 degrees of bounce worked well off of fluffy lies and fluffy sand. Guess I'll have to be mindfully of course conditions and lies when attempting to use it.

A 60 with a 12 degree bounce? Man! That's a huge bounce for a 60. And I see that you have a 56 and if that's like most 56's, that too should be in the 10 to 12 degree range as well. If I were you, I'd either lose the 60 altogether and have the grind customized on the 56 to make it a multi-purpose wedge, or if you keep the 60, get one with a more manageable bounce of, say, 6 degrees or so. If your 56 does actually have as much bounce as I'm assuming it does, then you basically have two sand wedges which besides being redundant, is taking up bag space for another club like a hybrid, a long iron, a 4 or 5 wood, etc. Just an observation. -JP

JP good point, the 56 does have 10. Well see how it goes, maybe I'll go pick up a lower bounce like you've suggested. I don't play in or on hard pan areas here in Maryland, my local has thick bent grass fairways and greens, but less bounce maybe better. I'd have it ground, but wouldn't know where to do that except in my basement shop and I've seen a home done grind job on another site that didn't come out pretty. Might hit Golf Galaxy and pick up another used 60 with less bounce to try. |

I get 2 benefits from it... my bag is lighter to carry, and I find that I start thinking more about the shot than I do about the club. I also find that I commit to a shot more when I don't have any choice as to what club to use. Example: Today I had an approach shot on the 18th hole from 180 out. That would normally put me in the range of a strong 5h or a weak 4h . Now I'm only carrying the 5h, so I could choose the club without any indecision , and my only focus was on the shot I needed to make. It was easy to commit myself to the shot, and I made one of my best swings of the day, putting the ball just 8 feet from the hole. (Unfortunately I misread the putt and missed 2" on the high side, but that's another story. Par is always a good score on that hole. )

Re: The 60 degree wedge
Interesting specs on the Titleist Vokey web regarding versions of same loft designated 'digger' vs 'slider' swing type.
The the 'digger' has 4* more bounce angle than the 'slider'. 54*(slider) = 10* bounce 54*(digger)= 14* bounce 58*(slider)= 8* bounce 58*(digger)=12* bounce Vokey Design - 200 Series Wedges

Re: The 60 degree wedge
Eddie, actually, I think it does. Scroll down one more on the Titleist site.
60* ('slider' swing type) = 4*bounce 60* ('either' swing type)= 8* bounce For whatever reason, for the Vokey/BV 200 series they designated the 'swing type' for the 60*/8* bounce as 'either' instead of the 'digger', lol.
