Re: Balls do make a difference

Numbers, I'll do just as you say, I'll give them a call and get some used tour quality balls and compare them to the new ones I have. Then I'll let you know what I think of each. How's that?

Re: Balls do make a difference

I happen to have an email from Lostgolfballs in my in basket, and I'll see what they have interesting to test. I"ve got new ProV1's, Hx Tours, TM Blacks & Reds. Bridgestone B330's, and Nike Platinums to compare with. I believe they sell most of those balls as used. Should be a good test.

I ordered 2 dozen ProV1x from them this weekend. $23 per dozen of the AAAA type. My experiment with one type of balls begins.

Cool!

I'm actually really, really liking the D2 Feels believe it or not, the one thing they don't do like the ProV class is stop quick on short pitches. Good fall ball, though, as I don't care about losing them.

Next year I will definitely be back to the ProV1x.

If you like the D2 Feel, suprisingly enough you may want to give the new Pinnacle platinum Feel a shot, I know it sounds crazy, in my book Pinnacle and Top Flight make about the worst ball out there, so i was suprised at how nice the Pinnacle Feel played.

How many of them do you find in your yard each week?

I've tried the Pinnacle Platinum Feels, and they are a good choice. Pinnacles are made by Acushnet, who also make Titleist, so there ought to be a little cross-pollination going on!

Funny, only one so far, I keep complaining to the Pro to stop selling junk balls and only sell premium at the club house....his choice of the month without me even going up for a visit is the Pinnacle Gold,.... and you know how I know....which is no where near that Plat Feel...really a nice ball. I agree, cross pollination for sure

Pro shops must really make a killing off those Pinnacle Golds, because every one I go into has them for sale, usually right up by the counter. Rarely do I see Nikes, Top-Flites, Dunlops, Wilsons, etc. But the Pinnacles are on the counter, with a display table stacked high next to that. Then they may have a few sleeves of Pro-Vs on a shelf behind the counter. Wonder what their profit margin is on the Acushnet brands?

I've not read the whole thread, so if someone else has made similar comment, then I offer my humblest of apologies.

With regard to the title of the thread, in my experience, they certainly do. For a start they give one a much improved map-reading ability.

Re: Balls do make a difference

I like the D2 Feels and have recently found that I get really good distance with the Callaway Hx Hot balls. But I'll play pretty much any ball, since I have a dozen of about 6 different brands in my trunk right now. I just love birthdays and gift-giving holidays.

Re: Balls do make a difference

Recently I found a few Bridgestone Treo Softs on the course the other day and I really like these balls. Of course they aren't a prov competitor, but they fit my game nicely. I'm not a big hitter, and the advertisements say that these balls are for moderate swing speeds, and that's where I slot in at.

I will pick up some of these next time I'm out and about.

Yep... that's a good'un. I've been going through my bag and the satchel I keep in the trunk to store extra balls and other occasionally needed golf stuff. During the summer I tried different types and brands of balls, and in each case I bought a dozen and often didn't use them all up before starting on something else. As a result, I found a sleeve or 2 of several different balls, including Bridgestone E6+ and B330s, Nike One Platinum, Srixon ZurC. I've been working on using these up before buying anything new.

The short story is that I like the Nike One Platinum and the Bridgestone B330s the best of all of them. Even on greens that are getting pretty firm with winter conditions coming on, I still got 6 feet of back up a 9I shot the other day, and either of these balls is rarely more than a foot or so beyond it's pitch mark, even on a 6I approach. I like that I can go for the real distance on a back pin (our holes are cut for winter use now, and are mostly within about 6-7 feet of the edge) and not have to worry about the ball skipping or rolling off the back unless I just wallop the shot.

I don't spin the ball a lot on chips and short pitches, so that isn't a real factor in my ball selection. I want a ball that spins well and is consistent on full shots, yet one that I can depend on the roll out for a chip. It seems that the Nike Platinum and the Bridgestone B330s are more dependable in this respect for my game than are either the Callaway or Titleist premium balls.
And the B330s is a bit cheaper with my employee discount at the course golf shop, so I'm going to head that was for now. I just hope that they don't change it too much for next year.

It would be nice to not have to start the testing all over again. That's a real pain in the beeeehind.
