Re: Jumbo putting grips
My clubbuilder recommended I switch to jumbo because I tend to be "handsy" with my putting. My stroke has gotten a lot better since I've made the switch to the Winn Excel Jumbo AVS this season.
Here is the grip: Winn Putter Grips: Excel Blue Jumbo AVS Putter Grip I used a midsize winn pistol grip last season and averaged 37.5 putts over 43 rounds. This season I am averaging 32 putts over 9 rounds. I am not saying it is all the grip, but it helps.

Re: Jumbo putting grips
Do you grip it high up on the fattest part, or down low? I was doing real well with it gripping low. Then I started to grip it higher and got I think what you call 'handsy', then went back to holding it lower on the tapered part and was making smooth strokes again. I love it. It could simply be that holding it higher up on the grip, my elbows are sticking out more and it would naturally be a handsy wrist-breaking move that I don't like whereas holding the grip down lower, my elbows/arms are extended more downward and I can more readily make a putting stroke moving my arms back and forth extended where my arms are rather hanging...I like that much better. I've experimented with this and I have proven to myself this to be somewhat so and is why I like to grip my putter lower (it may also give some stability with the grip sticking further up above where I'm gripping the club, kind of like a fulcrum balance?
My father-in-law (~85 yrs old) saw my new putter grip and picked up my putter and he liked it and requested one. I picked one up and put it on his old putter (I think the grip was worth 2x more than the putter) and he started making unbelievable putts. At one point this weekend, he even picked his putter grip up to his mouth and kissed it, lol. Amazing how something that makes such a small change in comfort can affect strokes like that. Quote:

Re: Jumbo putting grips
I also did the same grip high/grip low experiment and definitely have better results with gripping it low. I find when I grip it high I look like I am doing the 'funky chicken' and start spraying my putts.

Re: Jumbo putting grips
Sorry for my guestimate/exaggeration.... whatever it is is seems like 80+%, but I'll keep tallies on the next rounds and post them. Also, I seen so many missed putts this weekend that I'd guarantee you I wouldn't miss, but then again, I'm not putting on 13-stimp greens either. I have putted on a local course that is always over 12.5 stimp, often 13.1-13.4 so I know that is slick as ice, and I wouldn't come close to what I putt on my home course, which is a much slower...probably ~9 stimp at best. But I did keep figures on 1-putts....had 2 rounds of 11- (24 total) and 12- 1-putts the last week (don't ask what my GIR was...not pretty).

Re: Jumbo putting grips
I also didn't mean 80+% "at" all putts at 8 or 12 ft, but felt that I'm at that rate for up to 8 feet and in, of which 1-2 may be at the high end of that range and the others, of course shorter. I doubt anyone has all their putts at the same distance from the hole on every hole.

Re: Jumbo putting grips
Dude we get it...you like your putter and you're making more putts...
Your wouldn't be a golfer if you didn't exergerate a little... ![]() I personally hate oversized grips...makes me feel like I am blocking the ball and have had much better success with skinny grips...you have made a good point though about equipment in that it can be made to work better for you in some cases... PS...I always see missed putts that I would guarntee that I wouldn't miss...that's just golf, all stimpiness aside... ![]()

Re: Jumbo putting grips
OK, finally got my first round of golf in since last week (weather and going to my son's tournies had me off the course). I tabulated the my putting stats, felt a little rusty, but here goes:
Rnd 1 - score= 84 (26 putts). 9x 1-putts (4, 7, 10, 6, 9, 5, 6, 4, 10, 5 feet) 9x 2-putts/second putts from (1st putt/2nd-putt): (20/<1, 25/2, 18/<1, 30/3, 25/3, 15/3, 18/<1, 20/3,30/5) Therefore, made all putts 10 feet and less for 19/19 from 10 feet and in (includes 1-putts and 2nd of 2-putts) (that's 100% from 10-ft and in). I'm playing another round today. OK, I can see where I said "I increased my 80-90% range from 8-ft to 12-ft it sounds like I'm 80% of all putts at 12 feet. Didn't mean it that way because you get putts of all lengths when playing...I meant my improvement in putting has extended the length to which I can still get 80-90% of all putts made (that includes all shorter ones as well)....sorry if it was error in presentation. OK, I can see where I said "I increased my 80-90% range from 8-ft to 12-ft it sounds like I'm 80% of all putts at 12 feet. Re: Jumbo putting grips
Nah, the guys were originally thinking I meant I was 80+% from exactly 10 or 12 feet. Then that would be really good. I went to pull up putting stats that I saw a while back from touring pro's that had them in something like 5 ft spreads and was discussed on another board. So it was similar to what I posted in regard to 10-ft and in, they had 5 ft putt range, then 10 ft (which was 6-10 ft), then 15 ft (11 to 15 ft)...I would think it would make a big difference if you were at the low or the high end of those ranges.

Re: Jumbo putting grips
If you include tap ins you're bound to have gaudy numbers...

Re: Jumbo putting grips
Oh come on, you're not going to let me include tap-ins? Geesh, what kind of friends....(oh, this is golf, strictly business
).There must some kinds of way to combine putts & GIR & Fairways hit into some kind of number stat as an indication of how one is doing relative to another round. Relative Stat Factor = [(2x GIR + 2x FWY's)/#putts] x 56.25 = 100 = [(2x18 + 2x14)/36] x56.25 = 100 I used "56.25" multiplier to make the 'factor' come out to 100, which is what you'd get if you hit all fairways, all GIR's, and 2-putted every hole. My course has 4 par-3's, so I used "14" for the possible number of fairways hit. Better putting decreases the denominator, making the factor larger. But in all likelihood, most people would be less than "all GIRs/all FWY's", so their base/average number would establish their base factor. Better GIR's & FWY's than their base average shows up as a larger nominator, giving a larger factor number, better putting decreases the denominator, giving a larger factor number. Bad putting, bad GIR, and bad FWY's will all work to decrease the factor significantly, so each of these 3 has input into the factor. Hmm...maybe adding ["# of 3-putts" + #putts] to compensate for what could be deceptively masked by 36 putts if 2-putted every green, or 36 putts if 1-putted 6 of them, 3-putted 6, and 2-putted the rest of the greens)....should be something to take the 3-putts into account, so adding an additional "# of 3 putts" to the putting total?, or make it punitive by adding + (2x #3-putts) to the putting total? ....assuming 2 3-putts and using a new 'fudge factor' to get to 100: [(2xGIRs + 2xFWYs)/(#putts + 2x#3-putts)] x 62.5 = [(2x18 + 2x14)/(36 + 4)] x 62.5 = 100 Good putting will increase the factor, Minimal 3-putts will increase the factor, Better GIR's will increase the factor, Better FWY's will increase the factor. Your best game factor will be obtained when you do all of these the best that you can. ........can easily set up an excel spreadsheet to include the formula's so you just have to plug the numbers in.

Those are nice putting number for one round. What'd you shoot?
I'd be interested in another update after 5 and 10 rounds.
