I know this is going to be a hot button topic so all I ask is for everyone to keep it civil and play nice.

Pit Bulls - Love 'em or hate 'em? Seems like every day I read an article or see a tv news story about someone, mostly children, being attacked, mauled, and even killed by pit bulls. We all know the dog fighting history and the status these killers have in the hood so my question is.......Like many communities in my area, should your community have a pit bull ordinance that bans pit bulls from your community? If not, why not, and if so, do you support it?

I do have a dog in this fight, so to speak. No, I don't own a pit bull but as a former meter reader and eventual meter reading company owner with a staff of 80+ meter readers reading 10 million meters a month in Southeastern Michigan I've had more than my share of experiences with these animals. I have met with dog experts from around the country learning Pit Bull behavior, breeding, and instincts. I have plenty of my own experiences but I'd like to hear your thoughts and experiences on owning this controversial animal.

Poll: Most Republicans think Obama ‘sympathizes’ with Islamist goals

No matter what President Obama says about his religion, the debate over whether he is secretly Muslim continues to rage within the GOP. And a new poll finds that Republicans are now taking that rumor one step further. A Newsweek survey released Monday found that a majority of Republicans believe that Obama "sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world."

According to the poll, 14 percent of Republicans said that from what they knew of Obama, they thought such allegations were "definitely true"; 38 percent thought the allegations were "probably true." Meanwhile, 33 percent of Republicans thought they were "probably not true" and 7 percent thought they were "definitely not true." Asked whether Obama favors the interests of Muslim Americans over other groups of Americans, 59 percent Republicans said yes, whereas 34 percent said he has "generally been evenhanded."

I'm not going to give you the commentary you might expect from me on this, but say instead: how sad. How truly sad and pathetic we live in such a horrendously uninformed society. The level of political discourse in this country has gotten lower and lower and lower. It's no wonder we're where we are. Go back and look at the presidential debates starting from Nixon right through '08; you'll see every President from Tricky Dick to Barry (who's a Muslim, I guess ) talking about the same problems: fixing social security, fixing medicare, ending our dependence on foreign oil and on and on and on. And in 40 years we've gotten nowhere, literally nowhere, on a host of the most important issues facing our country.

I wish these morons and the idiots who thought Bush was behind 9/11 could all be stripped of their right to vote so the adults in this world could actually get at the business of moving our country forward. This is just absolutely pathetic.

5 years ago at this time, it would have been a Wednesday. I was at my aunt's home in a small town in North Louisiana, having been glued to the TV for the last 24 hours watching images of my hometown and wondering if I'd have anything left to go back home to...
After driving over 13 hours (the trip normally takes about 5 hours), we arrived at my aunt's on Monday morning around 2am. We talked a minute about everything, then went to bed. Got up Monday and spent the day watching the coverage on TV. We also experienced some strong winds and rain there, but we were 250 miles inland and north of the storm. As we watched the news Monday night, the storm was subsiding, and though the news wasn't good (we knew we'd be out of power for awhile) we were optimistic. My parents house had flooded but theirs was storm surge from a nearby bayou. Then as we lay down to sleep on Monday night, the 29th, people start reporting of seeing water in the streets. By the time we woke up, New Orleans was underwater...
In the 5 years since, things have changed. A new police chief, a new mayor now, a DA who is putting the hammer down on corruption in politics, the state has taken over all the failing schools and they are beginning to perform to the standard most children are. Some places are back in full, some are not. We have more restaurants than before, but we still haven't done enough to diversify our economy - we are still too reliant on tourism and conventions. We have put our best foot forward and have a list of initiatives to get done before we get our next Final Four in 2012, and our Super Bowl in 2013.
In general, things here are moving in the right directon. There are bumps and roadblocks, but the city is proud and will become a better place than it was before Katrina.

Driver's Training!!!

My 15 year old started driver's training a couple of weeks ago and after a couple of sessions on the road with an instructor he was issued a document that says he can drive on the road with a parent. That would be me because mom says she wants no part of teaching our son how to drive. That's fine with me......I've ridden with mom. :lookside:

Anyway, I took him to a large deserted mall parking lot prior to his first ride with his instructor just to give him a feel for controlling a car but other than that, I'd never let him drive. He had a double-header yesterday at a field about 10 miles away and as we entered the garage to leave I tossed him the keys. First, he looked at me, then at the look of shear fright on his mom's face, and said, "Cool, let's go." The fact that I'm telling this story tells you we made the round trip with him behind the wheel without incident. Mom rode in the back seat and nearly stuck her right foot through the back of my passenger seat using her "parent brake" but other than that everything was "cool."

I'm sure he's nervous and I know I am but he's got to learn by experience and it'll be me in traffic with him. Of course it seems like yesterday we were piling into the car on the way to his first little league game and now he's driving us there. Where do the years go? He's got a long way to go before he gets a real Driver's License and no doubt until then I'll be using my own parent brake often enough. I've already called my doctor asking for some strong blood pressure medication to take before each time I hand my son the keys.:biglaugh:

The first question he asked me after parking the car at the end of the trip........"Does this mean I can drive the golf cart now Dad?" What do you think *Wazman*, should I turn over the wheel of the cart?

Thursday night, my sister & I were at a hotel in downtown Lancaster, PA with our two granddaughters, ages 6 & 5, as we were going to Dutch Wonderland amusement park for our final summer outing before school starts.

Seems that there are movies shown on the plaza outside the hotel and they begin by playing really loud music about 8:30pm. As the music began, my sister & I both were startled but the two girls ran for the window and promptly began dancing and singing along to someone named Katy Perry (they advised us as we had no idea to whom we were listening).

Then, my 6 year old tells me the new song starting is "My Song, Grandma" - don't remember the name but in the car later as she insisted we listen to Sirius 20, I found out her song is sung by somebody Inglesias, according to my radio screen. Not Julio, I know him! LOL

Now, I'm not so old that I wasn't aware that there are a bunch of artists out there targeting the tween & teeny boppers - but are the 5 and 6 year olds really a market?
I'm an expert on what books to buy the under 12 set; do I now have to learn the music they like too? After all, I want to continue to be the "cool" grandma! :sos:

Ok, aside from the fact that the thing isn't even going to be at Ground Zero, I find this whole debate ridiculous. The 1st Amendment to the Constitution guarantees Americans freedom of religion. Period. What is the debate about? If the victims' families don't like it, they aren't obligated to go there. This may sound insensitive, but I really don't care what they like and what they don't like. The people of New York don't have to bow to their wishes because they lost family members in the attacks.

Is anyone else finding this entire debate ludicrous?

OK, the other nite we put our little Jack Russel out on his leash just outside our front door to let him do his thing before sleep. All of a sudden we hear constant barking. My wife and I go out and there's 2 watermellon-sized Armadillo's messing in our lawn about 20 feet away. The stange thing was, that they usually get scared off when I come out or with barking....but these guys were paying no mind to my Jack Russel who was begging for the chance to be let loose.

I get my shovel and go right up to them....they're still poking in my lawn, not digging much, just smelling. Then one catches site of me as I'm raising the shovel above my head, and he gets into this stance on his back legs with hands raised, almost looking exactly like my Jack Russel when he begs for food or a crook when you're holding a gun on him, and my wife yells out from behind "Noooo, don't kill him, he looks soooo cute", ok, so he gets a reprieve and I hit the shovel on the ground near them to scare them away. Never saw them so nonchalant like that...usually, I have to run and chase them or something.

Perhaps I'll have to get my old "Armadillo Live Trap" out of storage as it worked so well before, used netting to direct them into a 'funnel' at the end of which was a cage with a little bag of sliced banana, apple, peanut butter, etc.

BBC News - Why the US keeps minting coins people hate and won't use (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-10783019)

One thing that bemused me on my recent visit to USA was the continued use of the dollar bill. We lost the £1 note here many years ago and the lowest value bill is the £5 , which is now worth about $7.50 , was nearer $10 a couple of years ago. After a month of complaints eveyone adapted and the £1 note is something old fogies like me refer to in passing. We do not miss them.

Why do you still insist of all those notes. If you replaced the dollar bill and $5 bills with coins, you would save a fortune. Vending machines would need to be changed but that is little effort for the huge savings.

I was given a couple of dollar coins in change (probably because I was a Brit) and passed them on happily.
