Let me preface this thread by saying I am a Cubs fan and have been for 37 years now. Year in and year out I keep uttering the words, "Wait until next year!" Yet again, I utter these words.

Every year I enter the MLB season anticipating a successful year, with hopes of a WS crown. Every year I have found disappointment. Some years my disappointment came in October but most found disappointment coming before summer's end.

Why, oh why, do I continue to torment myself? Anyway, _*wait until next year!!!*_

Roger Clemens indicted on perjury charges. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/20/sports/baseball/20clemens.html?src=me) So now we will have both the best pitcher and hitter of their generation tried on federal perjury charges steming from steroid accusations. Both Rajah & Barroid are eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2013. They were both, in my mind, clearly Hall of Famers before they "allegedly" started juicing. How do you think this will all work out with respect to that ? There is absolutely no way to know who was and was not using PEDs. Should they get in ? How about Raffy, Sosa, Big Mac and others who have been connected to PED usage ? Then how about those who have only been whispered about. I think they should all be judged(from a HOF standpoint) for what they did on the field. Let them in if the numbers say so.

Leaguegolf at the Batting Cage

Before I start this story I want to make it perfectly clear that this isn't a "Look at me and what I can do story." It wasn't really planned but flashback circumstances beyond my control took over today and I thought I'd share........

Most of you know about my 15 year old son and his love for playing baseball. Those of you that don't, I'll just say that it's been 11 years of almost year round practice, drills, travel, and 600+ games. I've coached every year but this one and it's been a great and unforgettable journey that isn't quite over yet.

My son is now playing on an 18U High School Fall Baseball League and they had their first team practice today. He played 16U over the summer but wants to jump to the older high school level because he started on his school's varsity baseball team as a freshman and he wants to improve his mediocre (by his standards) freshman performance.

It's no secret that an 18 year old senior pitcher brings it a bit harder than a 16 year old freshman so he wanted to go to the batting cages before practice. Sadly, I can no longer throw the 80+ mph pitches he'll be seeing regularly in this Fall league. Truth be told, although I was a pitcher/infielder at the Class A level until I was 35, I was a junk ball pitcher and my heater rarely made it much over 70 mph. A few years ago a could still pitch the speeds he needed but those days are long gone! But I digress........

We went to the batting cages because he hasn't seen live pitching in a couple of weeks and wanted to get back in the groove. He stepped into the 80 mph cage (12 pitches for the $1 token) and missed over half and barely fouled off the rest. Let's just say he wasn't very happy about that  and move on. The next dozen pitches weren't much better and now he was totally out of sorts. Of course, me standing behind the protective net telling him what he was doing wrong didn't help his frame of mind much. It's strange how he used to soak in my advice and apply it so easily yet today I sensed he may have been tuning me out just a wee little bit. :shh:

While he was taking a break from swinging and listening to my advice, he turned to me handed me his bat and said, "If you think it's so easy why don't you try it!" I'll preface this a bit more by saying that in my day I was an above average hitter, which is what allowed me to play against college competition at the age of 35 but honestly, I hadn't swung at a pitch that fast in 22 years. I saw the challenging look in his eyes, grabbed the bat and helmet and said to myself, "What the Heck, I can do this." I took a few warm-up cuts and stepped back into time......

I barely fouled back the first pitch and weakly tapped the second one but then I swear, something came over me and I focused solely on the release point of the ball and squared up the next five pitches before fouling another one off. My body found my old comfortable hitting position, my eyes focused on the release point, I rocked slightly back and forth awaiting the next pitch with my hands in a perfect hitting position. There was the streak of the yellow ball, my body striding forward, the flash of my hands through the strike zone and the crack of the bat hitting line drives all through the large round hitting cage. My mind and body was in a zone that I hadn't been in in so long I had forgotten what it felt like.

It seemed like it was over before it started and and when I turned to my son, I'll never forget the look on his face. Astonishment would be putting it mildly but he didn't say a word. I stepped out of the cage, handed him his bat and helmet and said, "Son, if a 57 year old man that hasn't hit a baseball in anger in 22 years can do that, I know you can." He took the bat and helmet, stepped into the cage, and without a word, assumed a stance with a much more pronounced knee bend, loaded up his back shoulder a bit more, and started ripping the ball from the very first pitch. Crack...crack....crack....crack....it was a sound that any father would love. I know I did.

Again, those of you that know me a bit know that I wasn't going to let my hitting exhibition go uncommented on. As we got into the car for the trip home I asked him, "Well, what do you think?" and in typical teenaged fashion he replied, "About what?" all the while trying to hide a huge grin. He turned to me, offered the "in thing" fist bump and said, "That was way cool dad but there's no way you can hit a slider!" We shared a good laugh and he kidded me about being in the "Happy Place" that all old men go when they lose their minds....and he was right. I was in a very, very, happy place.;)

Well, it's about 12 hours since my little escapade in the battnig cage and I'm certainly not in a very happy place at the moment. My hands are cramping a bit from squeezing the bat handle so hard, my right forearm twitches every 2-3 minutes and my lower back feels like someone parked a car on it. Motrin and a heating pad didn't help at all and I'm about to break out the heavy stuff.

The price this old man pays for one last trip back to his "Glory Days."

NFL Pre-Season

Well the NFL preseason has kicked off and while it doesn't mean much (last year the Seahawks were 4-0 in the preseason, but only had 5 wins in the regular season) it does get to show you some of the rookies and guys that are trying to fill in the depth chart.

I didn't get to see the first 20 minutes or so of the game (from what I heard Tennessee drove down quite easily on the Hawks defense and scored) but I was pleased with the rest of the game. Russell Okung looks like he will be able to fill in for Walter Jones wonderfully at the LT position. Mike Williams, the former 1st round pick for the Lions who has been out of the league for the past two years, was able to get a 51-yard TD from Charlie Whitehurst with a nice move and a bad like taken by the cornerback. Another pleasant surprise was our D-Line, they were able to put quite a bit of pressure on the QB and stop the run decently. Other than that, JP Losman looked pathetic when he came in, giving up a horrible interception to let Tennessee have a chance at a comeback.

I'm excited for the next few games to see how Earl Thomas and Golden Tate do, they didn't have tons of opportunities from what I saw.

One extremely sad note from the game. Stafon Johnson, the man who had the weight bar come down on his neck last year while he was at USC, suffered a supposed dislocated ankle after only 3 or 4 touches. Kam Chancellor came up for the hit and it looked like somebody just came down on his leg the wrong way and it didn't look to good. He was down on the ground for 5+ minutes before they put an air-boot on his leg and carted him off. You don't have to be a fan of USC or the Titans for feel for this kid, I only hope he is able to make it back from this injury and get another shot in the NFL, he looked pretty good on the few touches he had, including a run of about 15 yards a play or two prior to his injury.

Baseball road trip

Next week, in separately scheduled but coincidental events, my parents are taking my two daughters on a road trip to eastern Canada (Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island) and the US (Maine, Boston). They will be gone 10-11 days. At the same time Mrs Jungle is going on a bus trip to NYC for 5 days, leaving me with the two boys.

I have to work a couple of those days, so I've organized child care, but I do have a day off (Friday) and I've decided, even though they might be a bit young for it, to institute what I hope will become an annual event - the baseball road trip.

This year we are going to PNC Park in Pittsburgh - it's only four hours away and Bucs tickets are dead cheap!

Anybody been to PNC Park? any advice on parking, food, etc?

We're going to stay overnight, and drive slowly back. If the boys are keeping it together I'm going to stop in Buffalo and catch a Triple A game (possibly two, the Bisons have a double header that evening).
