*Campbell DQ'd for failing to register*

Image: http://images.thegolfchannel.com/images/Apps/pgatour-logo.gif NORTON, Mass. – This FedEx Cup might be remembered as much for the winners as who didn’t get to play.

One week after Jim Furyk was knocked out of a tournament for oversleeping and missing his pro-am time, Chad Campbell was disqualified Saturday at the Deutsche Bank Championship when officials realized he never registered for the tournament.

“Just can’t believe you make a mistake like that,” Campbell said.

Much like the formality of signing a scorecard at the end of a round, PGA Tour players must register when they get to a tournament before it starts. Campbell arrived Tuesday evening, practiced all week and even played Friday, opening with a 1-over 72.

He just never signed up.

Campbell was No. 83 in the FedEx Cup standings, needing to move into the top 70 to advance to the third round next week in Chicago. He would have played Saturday afternoon in the strongest wind.

“It’s a sad thing,” said Mark Russell, the Tour’s vice president of rules and competition. “I’m not at all pleased with it. But it’s a regulation that you’ve got to register when you arrive on site. And if you don’t before your competition round, the regulation says you’re ineligible from competing in the tournament.”

Several players were stunned to hear the news, including Furyk.

“I’m deciding if I want to be Phil Mickelson right now,” he said, referring to how Mickelson blasted the PGA Tour for the pro-am rule that got Furyk disqualified from The Barclays. “Wow.”

Furyk slipped from No. 3 to No. 9 in the playoff standings. Campbell is out altogether.

“I feel terrible for him,” Furyk said.

Furyk and Davis Love III said whenever they have forgotten to register, a rules official had the sheet to sign before they teed off. Furyk said the responsibility lies with Campbell – as it did with Furyk last week with the pro-am mistake – but questioned why officials weren’t looking out for him.

Russell said no one noticed until Friday night when they were going through the forms. He said he called Campbell, who realized he never registered.

“He accepted total responsibility for it,” Russell said.

Love said it might be another rule that needs changing, just as the PGA Tour suspended the pro-am rule for the rest of the year. In the case of Furyk’s pro-am mishap and Campbell failing to register, no one can replace them in the field.

“It doesn’t feel like a regular tournament,” said Love, adding that it would be easy for a player not to follow his routine.

This is Campbell’s second administrative blunder. A year ago, he was on the plane to Hawaii for the Sony Open when he realized he never entered the tournament.

“It’s starting to be a trend,” Campbell said.

Round 2 is well underway and Matt Kuchar is lurking again. He's 2 back of Snedeker's -12 with 2 to play. Tiger is having another up & down tournament... 72 yesterday and 65 today. He's projected to make the cut for next week barely. But he'll have to play more like today than yesterday to be safe. Phil is having a decent week so far at -8. It looks like Harrington will miss the cut and be done for the rest of these "playoffs".

Maybe it's just the way I look at things, but shouldn't Rookie of the Year go to someone who is professionally "a Rookie"? Maybe they can add phrasing like in college sports, "True Freshman" vs "Redshirt Freshman"? If someone was on the PGA tour for 10-15 years and doesn't get their card for a year or two and then comes back via Q-school/NW Tour, does that make them eligible for "Rookie of the Year"? I was reading how Rory is high up on the list, but he's been playing Euro PGA for about 3 years, right?...how can he be a rookie? That should be reserved for 1st-timer professionals, ever.

Tiger and Sean Foley

It's certainly looking like Tiger will be bringing on Sean Foley as his next coach. He apparently worked with him before the PGA, at the PGA, and a few times last week. And if Tiger's 65 today at the Barclay's - his best round of the year - is any indication, maybe this is a good thing. I just read this article at Golf Digest, and he definitely has some pretty strong opinions as to what Tiger ought to be doing. It's an interesting read:

---Quote---
Who Is Sean Foley?
A 35-year-old Canadian now living in Orlando, one of the best young teachers in the game -- and, if the signs are to be believed, Tiger Woods' new swing coach

Indeed, candor is Foley's métier. Consider this assessment: "I want to get Tiger back to a place physically that he has been before, but with a new understanding. If he had understood what was so good about what he did before, he wouldn't have changed it. At the same time, I want to give him a better awareness of what he is doing now. The reason he has been hitting it where he has is that he didn't understand. As good as he is, as much work as he put in, the stuff he was working on couldn't have been right, or it would have worked better."

At Whistling Straits, Foley gave Woods two specific drills. They involved having caddie Steve Williams hold a club shaft against the right side of Woods' head as he swung, preventing him from moving his head laterally on the backswing. "There is no reason to have lateral movement off the golf ball," said Foley. "It impedes the proper turn and forces the eyes to make a new calculation. There are 15 reasons why it's bad."

Foley also had Woods place a glove under his right armpit and keep it there to the top of the backswing, forcing his arms closer to his body, ultimately preventing them from dropping behind him on the forward swing. It has been the cause of Woods' most persistent bugaboo -- getting "stuck." Said Foley: "Tiger continued to be stuck because he wasn't doing the right thing to become unstuck."

*No. 3-ranked Furyk disqualified from Barclays; will remain in Playoffs*
Aug. 25, 2010
By PGA TOUR staff
PARAMUS, N.J. -- Jim Furyk, ranked No. 3 in points going into the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, has been disqualified from The Barclays after missing his pro-am tee time Wednesday morning.
Furyk was scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. ET in Wednesday's pro-am but failed to show. The Associated Press reported that Furyk uses his cell phone as an alarm clock, but when he woke up Wednesday, he realized he had no power on his phone.
TOUR policy is that any player missing a pro-am time except for injury or family emergency is ineligible to play in that week's tournament.
The DQ does not eliminate Furyk from the Playoffs, but it does eliminate an opportunity to solidify his spot going into the next event, the Deutsche Bank Championship held next week at TPC Boston.
According to the TOUR's Playoff scenarios, Furyk could drop as far as 19th on the points list after The Barclays, depending on how others perform this week. Maintaining a top-five position in the Playoffs is important because the top five heading into the final Playoffs event, THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, can win the FedExCup simply by winning that event.
Furyk was scheduled to play with No. 1-ranked Ernie Els and No. 2 Steve Stricker in the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday.
More details will be announced later today.

The PGA Tour Money List and Jeff Overton

Greetings ...

*Official PGA Tour Money List at PGATOUR.COM* (http://www.pgatour.com/r/stats/info/?109)

If it were not for the Fed Ex Cup (Rite Ced Phred Kupplez), this year's PGA Tour Money List would be getting a lot more attention. Ernie Els leads at $4,097,761. Next come Phil Mickelson ($3,409,233), Jim Furyk ($3,308,872) and Jeff Overton ($3,301,181).

Overton's case is especially interesting - *check out his current 2010 record* (http://www.pgatour.com/players/r/?/02/84/75/results). Without the benefit of a tour win, but with help from three 2nd place finishes and two third place finishes, Overton has still managed to have a pretty good year.

Just imagine if Overton were to record say, about four more Top-5 or Top-10 finishes, including maybe a couple of 2nd place finishes, he possibly could finish out the year as Leading Money Winner without having won a single event. Oh, and by the way, the Leading Money winner Category still exists, and the title carries a five-year PGA Tour exemption!

Thanx-A-Lot, Frank-0-Sport

Tiger Woods, wife officially divorced

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP)—Tiger Woods and his wife are officially divorced.

The lawyers for Woods and Elin Nordegren say in a statement that the divorce became official Monday in Bay County Circuit Court.

The divorce comes nine months after Woods crashed his SUV outside their home near Orlando, setting off explosive revelations that the world’s No. 1 golfer had been cheating on his wife. It led to Woods losing millions of dollars in endorsements and taking five months away from the game.

Terms of the divorce were not disclosed, except that they will share parenting of their two children, ages 3 and 1.

So many of you guys here are so knowledgable on the US PGA rules that I thought rather than googling like crazy, I'd just ask here.

1. Do "Life Members" of the PGA tour (15 years & 20+ wins) have to play the required 15 events to maintain their cards?

2. Does Tiger become a life member in 2011 since he earned his card in 1996?

I'm wondering because it looks as if he won't play the required 15 events this year and, although due to his record, he is eligible to play all of the tournaments about which he cares, is it possible we will see even less of him going forward?

Or does he have some kind of exemption due to his personal problems and retreat to "in-clinic therapy" for 2010?

The European tour visits the Czech republic this week. It is a weak event but has an important role in developing the game in non golfing countries. Extra spaces are given to local players to help them on the road to become professionals. Sadly all have missed the cut with some horrendous scores. +34 seems to bringing up the rear.

While it may weaken the event ,encouraging local talent is important.

The last Czech to win a major was ???????????????????????

Clue : His father jumped off a train heading for Siberia and crossed the border to Germany.

Another Czech is missing the cut on the US Tour this week. His father crossed the border when he was a young boy.

Bill Haas story from the PGA

Standing on the edge of the Whistling Straits practice green Tuesday morning, Titleist Brand Ambassador Bill Haas watched as his caddie Michael Maness furiously scrubbed away specks of red paint and green scuff marks from the bottom of one of Haas' Bob Vokey Spin Milled wedges.

"How the heck did that happen?" one passerby remarked. Haas smiled. As he started to tell the story, a few others moved in closer to listen, including Titleist's Bob Vokey.

For the record, there are no artificial golf mats or red-ringed range balls here at the PGA Championship, only bent grass and dune grass and a lot of grass in general, not to mention plenty of Titleist golf balls.

But Haas took his first swings of the week in a different location, right off Interstate 94 at the Raymond Heights Golf Center, a 9-hole par-3 course and driving range just south of Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport, from where Haas was headed to pick up his girlfriend around 8 o'clock Monday night.

Haas decided to leave on the early side Monday afternoon in order to beat the Windy City traffic. As he got closer to Milwaukee, he realized, "Well I have three hours to kill, what do I do?"

Feeling a bit stiff after a workout that morning, Haas typed "driving range" into the Google AroundMe app on his mobile phone, and Raymond Heights Golf Center popped up. That was just before he saw Raymond Heights' large sign sitting on the side of I-94.

Haas pulled his clubs out of the car, then walked into the pro shop. He asked for a large bucket. The man behind the counter, 52-year-old owner Tim Stare, told him it was $6.50. Haas paid. Stare handed Haas his change and a punch card for a free bucket of balls with the purchase of 10 buckets.

"Oh, I'm not from here," Haas told him. "Don't use it on me."

Stare paused for a second. He then asked Haas, "Are you from South Carolina?"

Yeah.

"Your dad is Jay, right?"

Yeah.

"You're Bill Haas!"

A bit awestruck, Haas, wearing just shorts and a brown T-shirt, said "Yeah, I am."

Stare's response: "I caddied for your dad in the 1975 U.S. Open at Medinah. Did he send you here?"

Nope.

Haas said a lot of people tell him that they know his father, fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador Jay Haas, "but they've usually just met him once or whatever."

Stare first met Jay at the 1975 U.S. Open, when players were still using local caddies. Stare was working then at Oak Park Golf Club, and received his assignment for Medinah in a random drawing. Playing as an amateur, Jay finished tied for 18th that week (74-69-72-78) with Stare on the bag, and the two kept in touch.

Every year, Stare received the Haas family Christmas card and put it on his refrigerator. Many years later, Jay did a clinic at Raymond Heights during the week of the Greater Milwaukee Open.

Stare said it clicked it for him the second he heard Bill Haas' Southern drawl. "I've seen you grow up on my fridge," Stare told him.

After the talk, Bill headed out to hit balls. Stare eventually walked out with another bucket of balls, having hand-picked the best of the bunch.

Bill called his father soonafter, leaving the following message on his voicemail: "Raymond Heights driving range. Where is it, and have you ever been?"

Jay called back and asked his son, "Is it about five miles south of the Milwaukee airport?"

"He knew exactly what I was talking about," Bill said.

Bill said "the most random part about it" is that he rarely stops anywhere on the way to tournaments, preferring to just get there as soon as possible.

"What are the odds that you would stop at that driving range on the way up there?" Jay asked his son. "That's cool."
