Most Tired Golfer Or Tv Analyst Lines

for me has to be a line that goes something like: "It all is going to depend on his putter" or "It is all going to boil down to his flatstick"

yes, yes , yes, we realize putting is important in golf tournaments!

what do you guys hate to hear?

"There's still a lot of golf to be played!", especially halfway through Thursday's round when some no-name has the lead. It's like they believe we are all thinking,"Boy, if this guy can just hold on for 5 more holes he'll win his first tourney!"

Nick Faldo has added a couple of new ones. "That one trundled on up there.." as in "barely bounced and rolled" I think. Is trundled a familiar term across the pond for this sort of usage or is it a special Nick-ism ? I have heard of the word itself, BTW.

"He choked right there." Maybe it's true sometimes, but it's overused, IMO. Even pros are bound to hit bad shots from time to time...some of them happen to occur under pressure.

Re: Most Tired Golfer Or Tv Analyst Lines

Describing a player's reaction to the shot he's just hit: "He likes it." (Or: "He doesn't like it.") I don't like it when they tell me things I can plainly see for myself.

Also, when a player closely watches what seems to be a very good approach shot: "He's staring it down." Now, in my book, you can't "stare down" a golf ball or other inanimate object. You can only stare down something that has eyes and is looking back at you.

I haven't quite understood that one either...is that akin to "grinning down" something?

Re: Most Tired Golfer Or Tv Analyst Lines

Why do all announcers describe putts as breaking from "left to right" or breaking "right to left?" "This putt breaks left," or "this putt breaks right" is more than sufficient to describe the direction the ball will break.

Never thought of it that way... it is redundant.

Re: Most Tired Golfer Or Tv Analyst Lines

9 posts and we still haven't gotten to "That's a great golf shot" ?!? Thank goodness, I thought that might have been tennis, but the lack of a racket did confuse me there...

This is really bad in football too, *cough* John Madden *cough*. "That's a really good football play" Thanks John, I was thinking about putting a cutback right bubble screen in my slowpitch softball league, but you're right, that is a football play. On the playstation game, Madden actually says at one point "The more touchdowns the better!" Oh really, that's soooo insightful, the more points you score the better. I really wonder how much he gets paid for such pearls of wisdom.

Judging by the vast popularity of his Madden Football video games and his years of network broadcasting I'd venture to say he gets paid enough to at least keep his tour bus in fuel.

I dont get the endless he went inside on that one. I know they are pro analysts but I can just never see that. In foot ball, I just love how some of those guys say..Its going to take this or that to win this football game As if they are unable to do this or that its not longer a football game or we have to be constantly reminded of what kind of game we are watching. Priceless babble!!!

Very similar to the variations of "That was a great golf shot." that most golf announcers use.

How about just one word?

When the Masters comes try to count how many times they use the word 'DIFFICULT' - I bet you lose count before the weekend!

Oh is that not the truth, I know televised golf has to have sponsors but surely there must be a limit. A couple of weeks ago "before we join the action" we were asked to jump up and get out the door and buy Tide, Viagra, a Lexus, pizza, shampoo then Don Shula and his wife telling us to go on a beeping diet ! Back to the action ????? "lets introduce the crew of the ******* blimp, then the on course announcers etc. etc. After we met everyone and their ******* Granny, " we will break for this word from our sponsors" The start of the televised golf was at noon, by 12.19pm. we had seen one approach shot and three putts !!!! ( I timed it ). At least we can look forward to the outstanding job the TV crews do at " The Masters " that, is televised golf at it's very best ( thanks only to the Augusta National people ).

Re: Most Tired Golfer Or Tv Analyst Lines

.

That's why I believe that the greatest invention of the 20th/21st century is the Digital Video Recorder.

When I want to watch golf, football, or any program on a commercial network, I simply record it at its regular time but I don't actually sit down to watch it until about a half-hour to one hour or so after it's started. Then, as I watch, I can simply fast forward through all of the nonsense and actually watch what the program instead of all the interruptions.

The Golf Channel, has to be one of the worst as far as commercial and other types of interruptions are concerned. They do more self-promotion than any other network. I realize that they need to "drum up business", but if when someone finally decides to tune in and is treated to nothing but commercials, useless interviews, incessant "scoreboard updates", scenic views, (whith a voiceover promoting the blimp), screen crawlers, (with or without trumpets), idiotic banter between hosts and myriad other distractions, they'll likely turn to another channel just to get away.

Enough already!

Re: Most Tired Golfer Or Tv Analyst Lines

How bout, " and now to Tiger on the 1rst, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th," oh well you get the point.

Not bashing Tiger, I just like pulling for the underdogs. Couldn't help but laugh the other day when they were showing someone, I'm embarrased I can't recall his name right now, he knew he wasn't going to make the cut, made about 3 putts on his last hole with all these different putting stances. The gallery loved it, I thought it was neat they showed how even a Pro could find some humor in playing badly. Was a good lesson for my son too, you don't have to get mad and slam clubs, curse, and all those things, just have fun.

This isn't from the golfer or the analyst but who is the moron in the crowd who yells "IT'S IN THE HOLE" after every shot!
