Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Haven't played well enough of late to post here, but it is coming back now...
I'll give a few from the past week... Three days ago I found myself on a sidehill lie of a fairway bunker under a canopy of branches and leaves about 8 feet up totally surrouding my ball...(I know, I chose to hit it there...:rollup The lie was about 130 to the green with the hole cut 20 feet from the front...I hit a punched 4 iron that bumped and ran up onto the green stopping 3 feet away for birdie...Two days ago I carelessly hacked an 8 iron right of the green, putting myself behind a bunker in deep rough about 15 yds from the pin which was cut 15 feet from the edge, requiring a 30 ft carry to a green sloping away...I hooded the face of the lob wedge that I have started to carry again and addressed the ball with the toe of the club, heel raised...the club twisted a bit at impact but the hooding saved the aim and landed the ball 5 feet into the green with a little roll factored for the strengthed loft and lack of spin coming out of the rough saw the ball roll to 21/2 feet for a missed birdie putt... (Won't see any putts of mine in this thread from last week!!!:tounged ![]() Yesterday on the monster 579yd par 5 I hooked the tee shot to the first cut of the left edge of the fairway....I had to bend a four iron out of the rough and around a stand of trees where the fairway narrows but managed a hook that got decent but not great distance and positioned me right edge of the fairway 230ish yds to the flag with tree branches 100 yds out blocking direct access to the green...hit a screaming three wood cut with an open face around the branches, turned sharply and ran up to 6 feet for another missed putt... Had three great chips today, but nothing to really write home about since I didn't hole them, and two sandies inside 5 feet where I missed one of the putts , but the shot of the day today was a circus shot that broke my caddy up... I pushed a tee shot on the 210yd par 3 into the trees and just shy of the OB brick wall that runs down that side of the hole...the lie was on pine needles (we have them here too) but there was an opening to the green; only that the hole was cut about 12 feet from the nearest edge and there was a bunker between me and the surface...not enough room for a proper backswing, so after a few practice swings I put my back to the target slight opened up, faced the wall, choked down on the club and swung across my body and backhanded the ball Yannik Noah style (not through the legs though) one handed...it could have gone anywhere but ended up 10 feet past the hole on the right...for another missed putt...I'll tell you where my next practice session will be spent and it won't be with the driver... ![]()

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Played Saturday afternoon and didn't play all that well, but I did hit one good one. 203 yd par 3 into a stiff wind to a green guarded left and right front by bunkers with a very narrow opening. I hit my 1 iron "stinger" and it landed just in front of the opening and rolled up 5ft right of the pin. I made the putt... It brought ohhs and ahhs from my playing companions. It sure felt good. I hadn't hit the 1 in a couple of weeks so I was worried about making solid contact.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Played pretty well overall today without any real stunners…many good shots but nothing to really write home about…a few longer than normal drives (had the nickalus driver with the purple ice 75 s tipped to board…this club you have to let go and swing freely to get after the ball to make it work properly which was my intention as I feel like lately I have been hanging back and trying to steer my drives) some nice iron shots including my lone birdie off a 155 yd center of the fairway shot to 3 feet, and a handful of up and downs that left me smiling but in the whole scope of things were fairly forgettable…shot of the day that stands out for me resulted in a missed gir, and a heavy chip went for a bogey, but it was clearly the best shot in that I was 185 out looking at an elevated green fronted by water, my ball was 10 yards deep into the trees
, in medium rough (sitting up nicely though) with a overhanging branch blocking a direct shot to the flag and on top of it all was on a sidehill lie with the ball below my feet…because it was sitting up so nicely, I took my 22* rescue, closed the face and concentrated on keeping the legs quiet and swinging smoothly…I managed to draw the ball against the side hill lie and hit the right side of the green (making a crater pitch mark on inspection)…the ball ran through to the first cut just off the green (thinking that the rough took some spin off, but the closed face resulted in a lower shot than normal off that club and the draw spin gave it a little more run as well)…it was one of those shots that could have gone either way (double or triple bogey written all over it) and the resulting bogey was user error more than anything as the ball was set up perfectly for an easy U&D…liked that one…

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
The above was yesterday...this was today...
I pitched a 25yd shot short of the hole and ran it into the cup today...last option as I don't like the lob wedge but put it back in the bag, but I was shortsided and the rough was...well, rough... I also hit a punch out of the trees off a woodchip lie with my driver...the shot came off just about right and managed to keep the ball down and get similar distance off it as I did yesterday...

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I didn't have many good shots to choose from, so I'll just go with my best drive of the day. I hit a 290 yard drive (GPS measured) right down the middle of the fairway. Didn't birdie the hole, of course, but that's another story.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Okay, I know it's supposed to be the best shot of the round, but I forgot about my sand shots. The drive was nice, but I hit into a greenside bunker on 2 and 3 and both times I hit a beautiful shot out of the sand to within 6 feet. I missed the first (breaking putt) and made the second for a sand-save par. The beautiful thing about each was the fact that the ball came out high and had enough spin on it to hit and stop. My sand shots usually hit and roll forever. I was proud of both shots.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
My best shot of the round was my first shot of the year, which was after a 6 month layoff. I hit a 5-wood on a 214-yard par 3 to within 20 feet. Too bad I couldn't make the birdie putt...or the par one either!

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I played my 2nd round of the season in horrendous conditions. It was 43* and drizzling with the winds gusting to at least 30mph. My rangefinder stayed mostly in my bag because with the wind it was total guesswork anyway. I did hit one I was pretty proud of. It was my 3rd into a par 5. The wind and rain was blowing hard into me & from the left. I had about 150, usually a 7. I pulled my 5-iron which is the longest iron I can be trusted with, though I carry a 4. I played it back in my stance , aimed about 10 yards left of the green and pulled off a perfect knockdown. The wind grabbed it and it landed on the front left of the green and rolled past and about 15' left of the stick. I missed the bird. Nothing more fun than trying something difficult (for me anyway) and pulling it off. I love this game.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I haven't been on the thread before, but I've got a few from my weekend at The Belfry:
4th hole on the PGA National course - smoked a drive over the gaping water to a narrow landing area. I wasn't convinced I could carry it but figured my usual fade might see me safe, instead I hit a gentle draw and carried the water with ease (blew it 10 yards past the guy we were playing with too. He "carries it 250" - as if.) 14th hole - 385 yard par 4 with a big dogleg right. Our partner talked us into trying to cut the corner, I took about 75 yards out of the hole. Then hit a perfect high PW to 2 feet. Tapped in for my only birdie of the weekend. On the Brabazon (Ryder Cup) course: 2nd hole my drive finished up against a tree. I had a swing and could advance it. I set up for a slice and hit a hard 6 iron that took off low, then went up and curled around to the right and landed on the front fringe. Chipped up to save par. 5th hole I was in the shade of a tree, couldn't hit it in the air but punched a lovely 3 wood that ran up to the green. Shame the rest of the hole was poor. Made consecutive sand saves on 13 and 14, including on 14 where I was badly short sided but splashed out to 2 feet.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
My best shot of the round came from the 7th hole, a par 4 with a sharp dogleg right. I drove it through the fairway and was stuck behind a tree. I had 130 to the stick. I hit a low hooking 7 iron that hit about 10 feet in front of the flag an then just rolled to the fringe. My birdie attempt came up a foot short and ended with a par.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I went for the green on a short dogleg par 4. If you can hit it over the high trees, it was playing at about 290 yards. I hit it about as perfect as I could...right through the taller trees and over the shorter trees...where it hit and bounced right into the
bunker and rolled to just a few inches from the high lip. All I could do from there was get the ball out of the bunker (which I did) and then get up and down for my par. If my ball had just stopped about a foot or two shorter, I could have had at least a CHANCE at a birdie. Oh well. I still liked the shot!

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
My shot of the round today was not an out-of-this-world shot, as much as it was clutch...
I hit a terrible hook drive on the par 5 14th hole. It ended up in the woods with only one play. I had to hit a sandwedge back to the fairway that only really advanced the ball about 60 yards toward the green. Standing at 220 with a slight breeze helping and slightly downhill. I hit a GORGEOUS 5-iron that flew into the middle of the green and chased to the back pin location. Rolled that 15-footer in for BIRDIE!

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I went out yesterday and I hit a 4 iron 165 yards and stuck it on the green. What made this shot special is that we were playing directly into a 30 mph breeze and uphill shot to boot.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I had two unusual and successful recoveries yesterday, both second shots on par 5 holes.
On #9, with a good following wind, I tried to drive across the crossing creek that we generally lay up on - I bombed it over on the longer right side, but kicked farther right and into the edge of the 'trash'. My ball lay in briars, on the steep downslope of dirt pushed against an old stump, sort of floating an inch above the ground. I had to be extremely careful not to move the ball as I prepared to hit; I chose a nine iron and aimed up the fairway - I had to chop a downward blow thru the trash and made great contact, firing out a low liner that went over 100 yards and left me 95 to the pin. On # 16 my strong drive brushed the right trees and lost momentum, and came to rest in the mud at the edge of the lake - lucky for me the lake was down about a foot or it would have been submerged. My partners took up positions to watch me hit it, certain I was gonna be a splattered mess. I took a 7 iron and picked the ball off quite cleanly - not a smidgeon of mud on me - and hit it about 125 yards to leave a short wedge home. The absolute key to both of these shots, and to most any sticky shot, is to totally commit to keeping my head down thru impact.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I sunk a 30 footer for par on 1 and hit a couple of 100-ish wedges inside 10' but couldn't convert the birds.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
OK. Sunday, I hit what I thought was a good tee shot only to find out I had left it 140 out with a huge tree blocking my path to the green. No way to go low, there was a bunker in the way. I decided to hit a huge cut around the tree. Because of the loss of distance, I took a 5, choked it down and aimed it way right. The ball took off around the tree and landed the front left of the green, sliding up the slope and curling in towards the hole. Had a 20 footer for birdie which of course I missed!

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I had two last night...first, on the 13th, I hit a great drive and had about 245 to the hole. Hit a very nice high drawing 3 wood to about 30 feet. Missed the eagle but made birdie. Then I pitched in from about 30 yards on the 16th for birdie. First one of those on the season.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Shot of the day…
Hit some solid shots today, nothing really spectacular, but the shot of the day is the one that I can point to as a confidence inspiring shot that sparked a good run of holes and set the tone for the rest of the day… I fouled off a drive into the adjacent fairway on the seventh hole, a 545yd par 5, which is bad enough as it is the widest and straightest hole on the course…distance was decent despite hitting the trees on the way to the 8th fairway…the ball was sitting up in the fairway about 10 yards in from the treeline which was around 50feet up (wrong fairway)…I played the shot just like out of the Hank Haney last lesson book…ball forward, face open, squat down a little, head a little in front of the hands at address, weight favoring the back leg…it feels so wrong but it works like you wouldn’t believe…I then took a full swing and rolled my hands hard at impact to put a little draw on the ball and “scooped” it like old Hank says to do…nailed it, got it up and over to the center of the correct fairway about 155 out where I knocked it on for a gir then two putted for par… |
