Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
August 17 2008
Shot of the day game ball goes to a pitch and run 9 iron…I hit a few good shots today, and some were more spectacular approaches worked one way or another, but this one I felt best about because it represented a change in my approach to the short game that has greatly improved my day to day consistency…prior to this I’d have hot days and cold days…the cold days are warmer now…it is just easier to do…so this choice is a tribute and reinforcement of this new approach of keeping the ball on the green as much as possible… I was on the front fringe of a par 5 laying 2 about 10 yards off the green and 30 yds to the hole (long green), took a 9 iron with a slightly opened face, played it back in my stance and swept the ball onto the green allowing for roll…the ball hit the landing area I envisioned and ran to 2 feet behind the hole, the break putting the ball’s end point in line with the starting position and the cup…nearly holed it…walked away with a birdie and more confidence in this shot…

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I played Thursday and Friday and pitched in each day, both were from about 25 yards and both center cut... rolled right in. Neither was all that thrilling, though, because one was for par and the other for bogey. My best shot Thursday was a 185 yard 4 iron out of the short cut, pin high about 5' left... missed the birdie putt. I've hit some decent 4 irons since it replaced my 9 wood. I think it's in the bag to stay. Best shot Friday was a 7 wood from a FW bunker about 190 out. I hit the green and 2 putted for par. Just hitting a green from a bunker that far out qualifies as the shot of the day... maybe month, for me.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I hit a very nice 7-iron onto the upper shelf (with the pin on it) of a severely sloping green. The shelf is on the very left of the green, and its width is about a quarter of the size of the green. I decided to go straight at it, and succeeded with a beautiful high shot. Easy two-putt, where it wouldn't have been easy from the middle of the green or right-side of the green.
I also hit a great pitch with a 9-iron from about 60 yards, but it had taken a few too many strokes to get to 60 yards, and I missed the easy putt so that one carries a bit too much baggage! The best part about my practice and play: My lower back, which had given me trouble for three weeks prior, wasn't hurting anymore! |

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Saturday, I hit my drive on 18 into the light rough on the left and had about 150 downhill to a green fronted by a pond tucked up tight against the green. Since my round wasn't going that well, I decided to go for it even though I wasn't sure what the rough was going to do. I decided on an 8 iron figuring the rough would retard my club and I guessed right. I landed the green about 20 ft left of the pin and two putted for par. I forgot to mention the big tree between me and the hole that I had to clear as well.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Shot of the day
After a massive drive to the center of the fairway about 75 yards from the center of the green I faced an approach that I find very difficult…making good on the promise of a great tee shot with less than a full swing…I gripped down on a 52* wedge and made as smooth a swing as I could with the ball back in the stance…the ball kept a medium trajectory and tracked the pin, hitting 4 feet beyond the hole and digging in, spinning back the width of a hand…I then faced a putt that I find very difficult…making good on the promise of a great approach I should have these worries all the time!!! Got the birdie and walked to the next tee more relieved than anything…just a wry smile from Timon…he knew what I was going through… ![]()

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Shot of the Day
The shot of the day was a wedge that I didn’t even convert for birdie…to look at it from a third party point of view the shot was pretty ordinary, but was a tough one for me and the execution was just about as envisioned… I had a 70 yd third shot into the par 5 572yd green…I had tried to fade a three wood short of the hole to the center of the fairway, but hit it dead straight instead…the miss wasn’t terrible, lying on the left edge of the fairway, but it was under a heavy tree canopy that blocked a high approach, and wreaks havoc on that part of the fairway in the dry season…grass is patchy and I had a hardpan lie…I put the ball back and aimed for the high side of the hole, giving room for the ball to check and roll a little down the slope to the hole… I played the face a little closed to get the leading edge down as well as to keep the ball under the branches…I adjusted my aim 5yds right of ideal to compensate for an anticipated miss…I hit it perfectly and left the ball pin high 5 yds right of the flag…my safety buffer…I missed the putt but took a par and was very satisfied in that I played the percentages, pulled off a tough shot and hit exactly where I wanted to…had I gone for the flag and hooked the ball a little it would have run off the green into the bunker waiting on that side…so even though I didn’t get it as close as I’d have liked, I put it where I had the best chance of consistently making a par if I had lined up 10 balls and played from the same spot…so I guess the shot of the day goes to course management more than anything…

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I had another GIR out of a fairway bunker. This time with an 8 iron. That's my 3rd in a couple of weeks. The most improved part of my game, by far... fortunately I don't need to use it often. Play it back and minimize lower body movement.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I had two candidates today. The first was a birdie holed out from a green side bunker. The next was a escape shot from a water hazzard. I was approaching a par 5 with water on the left a hooked my approach a little to much and it rolls into the hazzard. It's sitting up pretty well, about 1/4 is under water. After I sink into the mudding mess and stop I pick it clean and advance just to the front edge and save a couple of shots. Normally I would have taken my drop, but it was my club championship. I didn't even get too muddy over it, just a little splatter on my leg, and my shoes needed a good cleaning afterwards, but it was worth it.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Yesterday was the first time I'd picked up a club in 3 weeks, and wasn't expecting a whole lot of anything skill-wise, to be honest. On the 6th hole I hit a decent drive that caught a slope and ran down to the right under some oaks. Had a clear shot to the green about 60 yards away, hole in the back another 15 yards, but had to keep the shot low (under 7 feet) to get past the tree branches. I chose my 4-iron, choked down on the grip, and punched a beautiful shot that carried the first 50 yards, hit the heavier grass around the front, popped up onto the green and rolled just past the hole to the left side, stopping on the edge of the fringe, leaving me about a 12 foot putt. Lipped out but made the par!

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Had a good one on Saturday... I managed to hit the green on the #1 handicap hole from 210 uphill with a dead straight 4 iron. It rolled on and stopped 10ft left of the hole.
On Sunday, trust me, there was NOTHING to brag about.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Yesterday my only great shot for my club championship was my second shot on the first hole. From 170 out I hit a 5 iron with 3 feet of the hole. I made the little birdie putt, and then the adventure was on.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I played 36 my last time out... 92-89. Both were schizo up & down rounds full of pars (2 birds) and 7s. During the 1st round I hit a 180 yard 4 iron approach from the short rough to 5' and missed the birdie putt. One of a handful of birdie putts within 10' I missed that day. The 89 was topped by a 7 wood tee shot to 4' on my (former) nemesis hole, a 197 yard par 3. I made that one, my 3rd bird on that hole in the past month.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
My swing has left me so I was coming up short a lot with my approaches this morning. The course was nicely mowed though, so I chose putter to get myself on the green more than a few times, once from a flat bunker. Despite not having had any recent practice with those shots, I could not realistically have pitched, chipped or blasted them closer than I putted them, so those were my shots of the day. Two nice long putts from the green were the shots that will make be come back though.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I putted like a monkey today, but I did have some nice tee-shots. One of the tee-shots is over a pond that interrupts the fairway just before the hole takes a right-angle turn to the right. I wasn't sure I could clear it with a 3-iron (my goto club off the tee), so I took my 1-iron. I had parked that club head-first into the bag after it had been naughty earlier in the round, so that I would have to think twice before using it again. But on this hole, a miss to the right would put me in a better spot than a straight shot, provided it would carry the pond, so how could I resist! I setup for a line over the center of the pond, and that's where it went, very straight. It looked a bit scary, because the shot went very high, but it carried comfortably, and dropped dead on arrival, which was a surprise, even with the high ball-flight.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
The following was not my best shot, but it was my luckiest shot (ever). Straight, fairly easy par 4. I pushed my 1-iron (tee-shot) straight right. It bounced high
twice on the cartpath and the second bounce brought it back left. It looked like it might make the green, right in the center, but it came up just short. It went 300+ yards though, and it got me some high-fives from the group of bombers that I had joined the hole before. End result: A stress-free par.Last edited by straightshooter : 09-05-2008 at 04:00 PM. |

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
My best today was my last. I was playing pretty solid... heading towards a decent score for me, then took 2 bad bogeys in a row. 150 yard 16th I hit it fat into a hazard in front. It's a dry hazard and I had enough of a lie so that I was able to chop it on and 2-putt. But I expect to par the short par 3s. 17 is a 520-ish par 5. A tight drive then water all the way down the left side. The first 2 shots are always a bit hairy and have cost me many a penalty stroke. I hit both great, though, and had 100 in. Then I semi-topped a PW. I still don't know how. I just went to sleep I guess. I still had a fairly easy chip for an up & down par but I left it 10' short then missed for another bogey. Last hole 340. I hit a nice drive right down the middle, then a PW to 3' which I made for my only bird of the day and a great one to go home on. Carded an 85 which bettered my cap by 2.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I played 12 holes after work today to try out my new hybrid set and on hole 9 I hit my 7 hybrid to about 3 feet. Once I get used to these things I think I'm really going to like these hybrids. These things are just so easy to hit. I hit 6 out of the 12 greens. Maybe I'm just in the honeymoon phase, but these things seem like they are really going to improve my game.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Played a terrible round (92), but did hit one stellar shot. I had an awful lie for my 2nd shot on a par 5 and had to lay-up at 175, I then managed to hit a 4 iron into the wind nice and high that faded into the pin, landing just over the front bunker and stopping where I had a side hill chance for birdie. Of course, I missed the putt, but it was still a good shot.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Played more on the "poorly" side today, and the "best" shot was probably a punch out from 15 yards deep in the woods. One of those where the biggest opening was about 5 feet wide, and even going backwards was out of the question. So I took my 5 iron, choked up and punched it right through the opening I was aiming for, even advancing the ball about 10 yards closer to the green and stopping it in the middle of the fairway. Left me a short chip to get up and down for bogey. The rest of my shots were average or worse, except maybe the 20' putt I sank on 17 for par. But making a longish putt isn't as rare for me as making a perfect punch out through a small opening.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
After a "not so great" day today, I did hit a really pretty 3 iron out of light rough that got up and flew high. I missed the front of the green by a couple of paces, but it was dead on line and just had a nice high trajectory that allowed it to land soft. One of those shots that brings you back next time because you realize you are not a totally dufus and you can hit the ball well if you concentrate.
