Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Standing 190 out in the middle of the fairway looking up the hill to a back pin, I decided to run a 4 iron between the bunkers and try to get it at least to the middle of the green. Instead, I got it all the way back to the pin and found the ball 3ft to the left of the pin which I putted in for birdie on #1 handicap hole on the course. I wish someone had been there, I don't get much chance to strut....

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Shot of the Day
Ironically, despite picking up 4 birdies today, I didn’t really hit any super spectacular shots…one wedge into a green dug in like I hoped it would, took one hop and spun back to 6 feet…looked like the ball was boiling on the green from my perspective on the fairway, and I hit a big mid iron from a scrappy patchy fairway lie under some trees that the grass hates to grow, over water to 10 feet from about 175 to an elevated green, but the shot of the day was a three shot sequence that went like this…smothered driver off the tee, 150 yds carry, 90 yds roll…5 iron hit fat and somewhat bladed, bouncing and rolling to the edge of the green 180 yds out, 45 ft dead hands rolling chip in birdie…sometimes a little luck can be a good thing and I was thinking about buying a lottery ticket after that hole….

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
201 par 3 17th. This one's a nemesis of mine. The green is well guarded by 3 traps, front right & left. Everything , including the green, which is only 25' wide, slopes left to right. I hit my 7 wood 12' left pin high. It was downhill putt so I couldn't charge it but was happy to walk away with a rare routine par there.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Hit a poor tee shot and had to lay up to about 50 yards on a par 4... my little approach wedge hit just behind the hole, one hopped and pulled back to about 12". Guys I was playing with just tossed me the ball and said it was good.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
All in all, I did not play good golf yesterday - we started off in the rain, which I hate and I haven't played in a month. However, I had some of the best drives and putts I've made all year so I'll play again. For me, all it takes is one wonderful shot and I'll come back.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I ended up in the far corner of a bunker today within a foot from the lip. The lip interfered with my backswing. At first I thought it was going to cost me because I thought I had to go in the wrong direction, but then I gripped waaaaay down on my sandwedge, bend way over and measured my shortened swing, and figured I could get it out with out hitting the lip first. It turned out to be really easy, with the shortened club. I took a big hack at it, and the ball came out normally, and ended up close enough to save par. Bending way over, I don't think I have ever had my eyes closer to my own ball, and it offered a really interesting perspective of the splash-bunker shot.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Yesterday I played 36 holes and my best shot of the day came on the par 3 short hole
6. The yardage was 135 to the pin. There was a slight breeze in my face and I took out a 8 iron. The ball mark was less than 6 inches from the hole. The ball hopped right and I had a 2 footer for birdie. I made the putt!

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I was riding a hot putter this afternoon. Birdied the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes. Came to the imfamous par3 13th, 200 yards uphill. This hole is either feast or famine with me. I just have a bad history with this hole.
Decided to take one more club today, wind was slightly hurting. Hit the 3hybrid. At first, I thought it was gonna be on the back of the green, then the breeze picked up mid-way to the hole. I thought it might be okay. My buddies hit good shots as well, so it was just a matter of figuring out who was who when we got on the green. My ball happened to be the close one -- three feet away. Drained it for four straight birds. Crazy round today. |

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
My best shot today wouldn't have caused much airtime on the Golf Channel, but it was good for me. I pushed my drive on the first hole just far enough right to have trees interfering with my path to the green. I chose to hit a low hook that would leave me about 50 yards in ( a comfortable distance for me with an abbreviated gap wedge.) It came off perfect and ended up dead center of the fairway. I made a good chip and sank the putt for a par to start the day off right.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Lately my short game has really turned around. I played in a tournament at Luana Hills. If anyone is familiar with this course, or Ko'olau (which are very similar), you'll know it is very undulated and, to put it simply, unfair. All day I was hitting good shots into green that would take horrible bounces all over the place. So, needless to say, I was using my wedges a lot. I've grown quite fond of my Callaway 58* wedge in the past couple of months. Seems to be my "go-to" club these days. And at Luana Hills, I was definitely using it a lot. On a fairly long par 5, from the blue, I get to my approach shot from 175 out, hit a crisp 7 iron downhill, with helping wind that land a foot short of the fringe and takes a monster kick 90* to the right and ends up in a small gully, with a downhill lie. So, I am standing on this hill, with a shot that is 15 yards long and on an elevated green that is about a foot above my head, not to mention that the green is sloping away in the direction I am hitting it to. I open my body up to face the hole and open the face completely flat and sweep under the ball with a full, 100% swing. The balls lands about 2 inches behind the hole, spins back and edges the rim of the cup and end up about 2-4 inches on the other side of the hole for a tap in par. Seems like a lot of text for a flop-shot, but I sure was impressed and had to give myself a pat on the back. I didn't want to celebrate too much, 2 of my playing partners were putting out for 8's and the 3rd partner was tapping in for a crowd-pleasing 12.

After our caddie, Daniel, had pulled 4-iron for both my partner (my brother, Chris) and I -- and after he'd pulled his 4-iron into the long grass; leaving me uncertain about going for the green, whereby I hit the 4 as instructed to the centre of the fairway), Daniel handed Chris his 7-iron from perhaps 125 yards and insisted that it would hit the back bank and roll back to within a few feet of the cup at worst. And then what could I do, but accept that 9-iron from 110 was the right stick for me? So I hit it onto the back bank right where he pointed me, and when we walked to the green... ...Chris was within 18" and I was inside him. Sweetness. ![]() P.S. If you pay for a caddie: listen to him. |

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Shot of the day
I’ll put shots from my last two rounds in one post… Monday I played, if not that well, but did good in spots…shot of the day was a simple par 3 that approaches over water to a green with water on the right and front, ob to the rear and right…at 148 yds it is tight but playable…anyway, I got to the tee and there was a foursome waiting on me…they invited me to play through, and in front of the “gallery” of four players, four caddies, and the assistant pro that was giving a playing lesson, I hit a ¾ 7 iron right at the flag, landing it on line 4 feet past the hole that included 1 foot of roll…made birdie with a smile.. Today’s shot of the day was a par save from the fairway…I hooked a drive into the trees on the 545yd par 5 and after scrambling down the fairway, found myself about 40 yds short of the green with my fourth shot…I managed to short side myself and had two bunkers to carry...the green slopes away as well…I was definitely on the no no side of the hole…I took out my new 58* wedge, opened the face and swung as smoothly as I could…carried the bunker, hopped once and dug in, trickling another foot to 2.5 feet that I converted for par…

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I just got around to posting this. Last Saturday, before getting rained out, I hit one of my best shots ever. On a slightly downhill par 3, 157, I hit a choked down 7 iron that drew right in on the pin, hit 18" in front, one hopped pin high, spun right and lipped out to leave me with a 1" tap-in for birdie. The whole time the ball was in the air, my companions were talking it in. We all thought I had my first ace, but as has always been the case, I missed it by a fraction.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
I had a few nominess today, but the shot of the day was on hole today. I was 183 out and I pulled out my 11 wood. I draw the ball perfectly into the middle left hole location. I had a 8 footer for birdie. I missed the putt
![]() My second shot that could have earned the honors was a 103 yard wedge shot that landed 2 foot from the hole. My putt lipped out! Those kinds just drive me crazy.

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
Shot of the day
Simple and straightforward today…was playing with the pro and I pushed my tee shot dead into the woods…I punched out where he wanted me to (he nixed my aggressive line asking me if I wanted to drop another shot)…I then took a 4 iron from 205 and hit the most pure long iron shot I have hit on course in awhile…big floating high draw that went right at the flag…I actually took pause to watch the shot all the way to the end of the rollout which I don’t do often; it just felt perfect…the ball landed one yard short of the pin and two yards to the left and rolled out to 15 feet below the hole…I made the par saving putt which made the shot that much sweeter…

Re: What was your best shot of the round thread...
This afternoon, on the second par 3, a 160 yarder across a valley to a two tiered green, I hit an 8 iron draw in to about 5 ft. What made it my best shot was I was dead between a 7 and 8 for me and normally, I will club down, hit it hard and pull it right. This time, I kept my swing under control and didn't overswing. The ball drew in to the pin, hit pin high and danced to a halt. I missed the birdie putt, but I don't even care. The young man playing with me whistled and said, "Just like you see on TV." That made me feel good.

That paints a picture postcard in my mind. I remember several times finishing in the late evening where you could barely follow your last tee shot against the darkening sky. I love that time of day on the course.
