Just Can't Help Yourself

I have a confession. I had plans to play golf on Saturday, but have a family obligation that day so I won't be golfing. For a few minutes, I debated coming up with an excuse as to why I couldn't get to the family event, but thought better of it. After all, there will be other days to play and I'm really not that much of a diehard. I have a friend who played in a tournament the day after his daughter was born - same guy was late to his own wedding because he was golfing and I know for a fact my brother played golf instead of coming to my Easter brunch last year. So, tell me - have you ever played golf instead of doing something that you really should have been doing?

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

I used to live to play golf.

After three years of being selfish, one day one of my kids asked me, "Dad, don't you like being around me on the weekend? You never come to my soccer games, and you never do anything with us. You're always playing golf with your buddies." She was almost ready to cry.

Never missed another soccer game, ever. All because a 7-yr-old daughter was brave enough to be brutally honest with her father.

You live and learn.

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

If you mean other than working(!), then I don't think so. I've played golf the morning of a few weddings but never missed or been late.

I had to give up my golf membership because I had so many things I was supposed to be doing that I didn't have enough time to make my membership pay for itself.

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

This made me think of an old joke . . .

Two guys were in the fairway of the fourth hole when a funeral procession went past. One of the guys removed his cap, placed it over his heart and watched intently.

Bob said, I've never seen you do that before, it was a nice gesture. The first fellow said, it was the least I could do, after all we were married for twenty years.

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

I have, and try to get family to schedule things on Saturday afternoons instead of Saturday mornings. I tell groups I'm involved with that I golf on Saturdays. Many don't understand. Unfortunately, my closest friend and golf partner is only able to golf on Saturdays (I have more freedom to choose), so I really look forward to our Saturday times.

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

Funny you should mention golf and birth of a child. Our first was born on a Tuesday morning (0600) on April 27. After the new had worn off I figured, what am I going to do now? Well, it was pushing 0800 and I said, "The wife and new daughter is sleeping, so what the hey." I was on the links before 0830. I also played golf the day I got married. I believe it set a good stage for the rest of our lives together.

Pistol - you make me laugh. Good thinking - set the precedent from the beginning - no questions or confusion later.

I've passed on - or been late for - serveral family functions to play golf. It was my wifes side of the family so it really wan't that big of a deal. They all know how I am about golf.

Work... plenty of times. Hey I have my priorities. I can't recall anything else but I bet my wife could. I'd rather not ask and get her started though if that's ok.

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

I had to go out to a client's house one morning to fix a balky computer, and had scheduled another appointment just after lunch with another client to go over a new project. The first client lived about 20 miles away out in the country, and to get there I had to drive by a couple of nice courses I'd been wanting to play. I brought his computer back to life pretty quickly, and he asked me if I cared to run down the road and play some golf. He had some coupons for free rounds at one of the courses I wanted to play. I called my afternoon appointment, and asked if he'd mind rescheduling. He didn't mind, he said, because that would let him get in 18 holes before going home! I told him we should play sometime, and he said,"Why don't we schedule a round tomorrow and then afterwards we can discuss the project?" I "checked my calendar", and then agreed! Played 2 days in a row at nice courses, and it didn't cost me a thing.

I just couldn't help myself!

Re: Just Can't Help Yourself

My wife learned early on to schedule our lives around my golf. I told her when we were dating, "I play golf every day unless it is snowing or lightning. My ex-wife used to complain about all my golf. I told her not to make me make a choice." She said, "OK, I get the message". It has never created a problem since. As a matter of fact, on the morning of our wedding, she insisted I get in 9 before I get dressed for the ceremony.

God made this woman for me...and not just for the golf thing.
