Life, Stress & Golf

I play in a league - we play in the evening one day a week. I try to adjust my work schedule accordingly, but there are days when I am so busy at work that I'm rushing to the course and I barely have time to get my shoes tied - forget getting any practice in before we tee off. I hate those days because without fail I will probably triple the first hole. Fortunately, I usually relax as I walk to the 2nd because I know it's out of my system now. Other than that, I can usually leave life and any stress behind when I set foot on the course. Do you find that as well or do you find that the stresses of life interfere with your game?

I think pretty much never. Once I'm on the course, everything else is left behind. It's nice. And besides, golf is amply stressful enough, without dragging the stresses of life along for the ride.

I am fortunate that i find it easy to switch of. After work as soon as my butt hits the car seat work is forgotten. If i am going to play golf that takes over my thoughts,if i am running late it doesnt worry me,phone ahead make a later tee time,no big deal.

Being on the golf course is one place that I never feel stressed out , even if I am playing poorly . I forget about the stress of work ect .. while I am gofling and it's great playing with friends . Once I walk off the 18th green I get stessed

Re: Life, Stress & Golf

I can mostly relax on the course, but since I own a restaurant, I can and do get calls from employees needing something. Once that 1st call comes in, I get aggrevated and it throws me off my game for a hole or 2. Most of what I'm being called for can either wait or they can fix the problem themselves with a little thought.

Re: Life, Stress & Golf

Depends...sometimes I have something big going on at work and I do my best to let it go, but it is difficult...I would say for the most part that I am able to tune out completely on the course, but I don't have a terribly high pressure job...I can tune out at the movies or a restaurant...

If I get a call on the course concerning a situation that deserves a little worry, then that's it...I pack up and go to work to deal with it...almost never happens though...

Re: Life, Stress & Golf

It seems the only time I'm not stressed out about life is when I'm on a golf course. LOL... I find it to be the perfect therapy for most ailments.

But I don't like rushing to a golf course and not being prepared to play when it's time to step up to the first tee. I don't need 2 hours of warmup, but I do like to get there early enough to get loose and be mentally ready.

One of the worst things you can do in golf is make a defensive swing, and if I'm rushing around to get to the first tee on time, that's usually what happens.

Re: Life, Stress & Golf

Golf does for me the same thing flyfishing does. Once I am doing either, I forget there is anything else in the world. I used to check my watch in a trout stream and realize I had been there for 4 hours. Golf does the same. I check the time and realize I have totally forgotten there is a world out there that beckons. Great release during any stressful time. When I get crabby, my wife suggests I go play a little golf.

Re: Life, Stress & Golf

There are some instances where life inevitably interferes with your ability to focus as you play a round, but generally I find the game to be a great escape from reality for a few hours. The fresh air and ability to lunge vigorously at the ball as you try to crush the core out of it tend to get any frustrations out of my system nicely once that 3-4 hours is up.
