Had a Double Eagle Today

I had a double eagle on a 475 yard par 5 today. I hit my driver down the middle and had 226 to the pin with a wind coming off my left side. I hit the shot and thought it was a little short but one of the guys I was playing with was telling it to get in the hole. I thought is was going to be short all the way, but it hit in front of the green and rolled right into the cup. The sad part is, it was during our monthly Retire Military Golf Association tournament and I didn't get to the course in time to get into the skins game. I think I would have pocketed quite a bit of lute with 4 birdies and a double eagle. It took almost 30 years but I finally ran the table with a hole in one, double eagle, eagle, birdie, bogey, double bogey, triple bogey, quad bogey......Now it's time to go clean the garage.

Re: Had a Double Eagle Today

Man, that is fantastic!! I think the Double Eagle is the most exciting thing in golf. I've witnessed 7 holes in one, and only one DE. I think I was as excited as the friend who got it.

No that was more of the wife's idea. I came home and told her the news and she's like. "that's great, now let's get started on that garage."

Re: Had a Double Eagle Today

Congratulations on the great shot, that is definitely a feat! The closest I can say I've been is about 10 feet. It'd be nice to get one someday, but it's not something I really count on.

When Mr. Bogey had his DE a couple years ago it brought up a conversation about the chances compared to a HIO. I googled and here's what I got.

2004 article in Golf World magazine quoted Dean Knuth, inventer of the USGA's slope rating system for golf courses and handicaps, as saying the 6-million-to-1 figure was a little too high. Knuth put the odds at 1-million-to-1. Knuth is such a smart guy, we're inclined to go with his figure.

Regardless, it's clear that the double-eagle is a much rarer feat on the golf course than the ace: hole-in-one odds are in the neighborhood of 13,000-to-1 for the average golfer.

The Golf World article included a great assortment of facts about both double eagles and aces. Among those facts are:

• Between 1983 to 2003, there were 631 aces on the PGA Tour but just 56 double-eagles - and never more than 6 albatrosses in one year.

• From 1971 to 2003, there were 24 double-eagles on the LPGA Tour.

• Approximately 40,000 aces a year are made in the U.S., compared to just a couple hundred double-eagles.

I knew they were rare, I didn't know that the club was quite so exclusive

Re: Had a Double Eagle Today

Wow I didnt realize how rare double eagles were either, reminds me of the time I hit the pin in two on a par 5, and only came away with Birdie...Mine was on a 465-yard par 5. I had approx 215 in and I hit it and I heard it hit the pin, rolled to only 3 feet, but it was a downhill-slider and I missed it . But congratulations on your Albatross!

Wait a second. You've only gotten to quad bogey? I mean, I've never gotten an ace or an eagle but I have made it past quad bogey a few times. Congrats!
