Opposite Handers

Based on some of the posts, I realize that a few people here play left handed. This may sound stupid, but I find playing with left handed golfers a bit difficult. Every time I think I'm moving out of their way - I'm really moving more in their way. It's very confusing for me - like I'm driving in England or Ireland. Does anyone else find this? For those of you that are left handed - do you find you do the same with right handed golfers.

Must be a chick thing.

Really though, I have never heard such a thing... My son is a lefty, and none of us, not even my wife ever have weird goings on about where to stand, or where to get out of the way.

GameFace - Every time I say something you don't understand - you tell me it's a "chick" thing. Is that your version of "yes dear"?

Re: Opposite Handers

Being a lefty, I have had to deal with almost everyone else doing things backwards my whole life, so golf just became one more of those things. The one thing I do find funny is when a righty is driving the cart, they can't seem to get it down that they should approach the ball from the left side so I don't have room to swing. I had a friend that would do it time and again and then, just as he was ready to stop, realize it and have to go around.

Re: Opposite Handers

I'm left handed, never really noticed it playing with right handed golfers. For some reason I don't get to play with right handers much though, it seems like everyones left handed around here

Re: Opposite Handers

The biggest thing (concerning playing) is when I might be sharing a cart with a righty. They just forget which side to park the cart. And as long as the cart is clear of my swing, I honestly don't care which side it's parked. Having played an overwhelming majority of my golf with righty's, I'm quite accustomed to knowing proper etiquette for them.

If you think it's tough playing with a lefty, try being a lefty and having to reverse every block of golf instruction in print or on tv to understand and apply it. Or try going to an equipment store and demoing a new club in more than one loft or shaft, and that's providing they even have a LH demo, let alone the specs you might be looking for. Or finding a club that you like, placing the order, and learning that it will take months to get it because they don't have an abundance of stock because it's LH.

And not that I enjoy hitting off of mats, but it's the norm during the winter months. Finding a mat that accomodates a LH player is like winning the lottery.

Just because I understand the customary norms or the rationale of supply and demand doesn't make it any less frustrating to endure sometimes. At times I feel like my dexterity is nothing but a burden to the golf industry in general.

Re: Opposite Handers

Funny thing about left-handedness, the population is about 1 in 7 lefty worldwide. In the US, only 1 in 20 golfers plays left-handed. In the rest of the world, the proportion of lefty golfers is about 1 in 7. I suppose this harkens back to the days when my Grandmother tried to starve me to death moving the spoon from my right to my left hand. Thank goodness my Mom finally told her to stop! There was a stigma attached to being left-handed that goes back into ancient times when lefthandedness was thought to be a sign of evil.

You nailed it PA. Everyone of those points is something us lefties deal with on a regular basis. Mainly the cart parking problem. I never have problems with where to park a cart for righty's or lefties, but it's a major problem for some right handers to not park on the left side of the ball. GIVE US OUR SPACE!

And for the gear thing...I've wanted a set of Tiger's blades forever, but do they make them left handed...NOPE! GO PHIL!

Re: Opposite Handers

Next time you play with a left view it as a mirror image of a righty golf swing...

Hope this helps!!

My son and his instructor do that in certain instances! It's pretty cool ... that is, until the coach has to reset all of his video gear for the next student!

Re: Opposite Handers

OK, let me see if I got this right, if playing with you,

...no one can talk,

...and you gotta be right-handed

Do you have any objections to people wearing clothing of a particular color? LOL

I'm a leftie. I presume if a right-handed person is lining up to hit the ball, I don't get between him/her and the flag. Shouldn't matter what side of the ball I'm standing on, just don't get in front of me, lol.

I have seen people at our club, and I don't know if this is their intimidation factor, if it's their funny thing they do to screw up their buddy, but they'll be standing within 5 feet of you watching you, facing you during your stance, now that is rude, imo.

Re: Opposite Handers

I'm a lefty also, and as someone else mentioned, since I've been in the minority my entire life, I don't notice anything really when it comes to playing with righties. I don't think I've ever played with another lefty, now that I think about it...

My wife is left-handed also - comes really in handy when we go out to eat with another couple, and we're sitting side-be-side on one side of the table.

Me being a lefty (except golf) and my wife a righty, I make sure I sit on her left side. Otherwise we bump arms whilst trying to eat out meals.
