Re: What did you shoot today?

Well, I played the style that I have become accustomed to today (fancy way of saying that I was in the neighborhood of my handicap)…after fooling around with my irons the last few times to the range, I was hitting them well but off the mark…still pretty good all around play…was +11 through 16…what made my day was 46% up and down incl. two sandies…needed it as I only hit 3 greens …but I was 9/11 for fairways and had 26 putts with no 3 putts (lately my nemesis)…baby steps but I feel more consistent…just need to stick with an iron preshot routine for more than a week…
Shot of the day...
Drama wants the big drive, and I hit quite a few, but the one that stands out for me was a shortsided greenside chip out of 4 inch grass to a hole cut into a downhill slope...ball was sitting up and allowed me to go after it with a lob wedge and spin enough to leave me a 2 foot tap in...

Re: What did you shoot today?

Yesterday evening was ugly. I went to the local par 3 course because it's the only place I have time to go after work. It's cheap and allows me to hit lots of wedges and a short irons. The greens are also usually very nice there, so it's a great place to practice putting.

I only had time to play 9 holes. If I shoot anything worse than 2 over par, I'm not very happy.

1st hole: 100 yards. Pin is on the left side. I aim for pin instead of middle of green. I pull it slightly left, and hit it right in the edge of the bunker. I was pin high, and still only about 15ft from the hole. It wasn't a horrible shot so I didn't get upset. I proceed to pick the ball clean and knock it way over the green. I made a 5.

2nd hole: 155 yards. I simply used too much club & hit the ball way over the green, into the woods. Another 5.

3rd hole: 120 yards. I chunk it about 70 yards short of the green, right into a hazard. Made a 6.

I won't even tell ya'll about the rest of my round...

Walked 9 and shot 38, but even more important, played without back pain today for the first time in a while. It was awesome.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Played yesterday and shot a 94.... ouch! What makes it worse is I didn't have any penalty strokes! I actually swung the club that many times. Drove well, putted well, 100-in with the wedges was horrible. 9/14 Fairways, (only 1 of the 5 that missed was over 5 feet off!) and only 1 GIR - that will kill you!

Re: What did you shoot today?

I played with a friend and two of his friends today...wouldn't have gone out except we had already set the date (exhausted)...so anyway, I rolled out of bed at 5 am to make the best of it...
Didn't happen today...couldn't hit the fairway, hooking irons, chili dipping pitches...shot a 51 for the front nine and 37 for seven holes on the back before I had to run to work...strange thing is that I would pull it together for a hole or two, but kept making disaster shots that cost strokes...extremely inconsistent today; I blame some of it on the company I was playing with...despite my poor play, I was doing better than they were...difficult to concentrate on scoring when balls are flying every which way and you have to wait for the three others to hit once or twice before it's your turn again...one of the group routinely took four to reach par 4 greens...I was a little disgusted and alot tired...try again...

Re: What did you shoot today?

92 on Tuesday. One stroke higher than last week, 2 off bogey golf. The bad first - Only hit 4 fairways; fought the over the top snap hooks for a while; started off the first 4 holes of the back nine +9, 26 strokes in 4 holes with 3 penalty strokes; three 3-putts (one on the par 5 last hole from about 15 ft to par). The good - hit 6 greens (not bad for me); still hit a good few solid shots; started the round off well; had a shot at eagle with 2 good shots on 18; putting was better than last week; pulled it together after a horrible start on the back nine and shot 2 over on the last 5 holes (could have been even for that stretch if I make the 15 foot eagle putt on 18).
All in all not too terribly disappointed.

Re: What did you shoot today?

I went out for my first 9 yesterday after work......boy was it ugly. I am not even going to post my score. I had some nice shots, but not any nice holes. At least I got a chance to go out and use all of my new equipement. I definately need to focus on not overswinging and my allignment. I think it will come around.

Re: What did you shoot today?

I shot an 87 Saturday, an 87. I still keep adding my card to see if its right. I hadn't shot below 94 in the past 8 or 10 games.

I shot an 87.

Congrats! Looks as if you've gone to the next level!

I just returned to the game after a 6 year absence. I shot a 103 last week in the first round back. I look forward to breaking 100 my next trip out (could have easily done that last week!), and am setting a goal of breaking 95 before Christmas.

I was great off the tee last week, having missed only 3 fairways. My putting was also solid, but from 180 in my game needs a lot of work ... a whole lot of work. To be expected after a lengthy layoff, I guess.

But having had quadruple bypass surgery 18 months ago, I'll sure as shootin' take a 103.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Bama and Nachos, thanks. Bama I hope your feeling good, my Dad had that surgery too and I can remember helping him get over it.

I have to credit my improvement to two things. I got rid of my clone driver and got a Cleveland Hibore off of Ebay. Man, this thing hits straight. I also started using a 7 iron like a putter from about 3 to 4 ft. off the green, started getting alot closer to the hole. I know I'll keep getting better with ball striking, but I noticed my course managment needs to improve to drop anymore strokes.

Thanks, guy! I feel amazingly well. In fact, I tell people all of the time that prior to my surgery, I didn't know just how BAD I felt. LOL! I feel better now than I did when I was in my 30s. I quit smoking (after 32 years), dropped 40 pounds, work out regularly now, and am in the best shape of my adult life ... which is probably why I took up golf again ... for the exercise. Or at least that's what I tell my wife.

This is a self-portrait 10 days after my surgery .. note the scar. (September of '05):

And here is another self-portrait after I completed my cardiac rehab in January of '06. (The little red 'heart' pillow is what they gave me to hug when I had to cough. OUCH!:

Thanks again!

Re: What did you shoot today?

Bama, You look great 18 months after the bypass. My father had a hard road back from his bypass and really slowed down his life after that. It is great to hear that you are back healthy and playing again.

I played for the first time in 1 1/2 months this past Sunday. Shot a 96 with 7 of 11 fairways hit with the driver and 0 of 2 with that dreaded Ping 5 wood, only 4 GIR's and 37 putts. I shot an even 48 on the front and the back. After shooting a 110 and 108 in January I am pretty happy with the results. I definitely need to practice my sand shots. I took a 7 on a par 3 because my ball was buried in the sand twice and the third shot slid off the green and had to chip back on. It looks like the work with my instructor is paying off. I would like to be comfortably in the 90's this year and hopefully break 90 this year at some point.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Went out today to my favorite little short course which is 5027 par 70 from the middle tees and shot 78. 4 bogies on the front and 2 birdies, 1 double and four bogies on the back. 31 putts which could have been four better with a touch of luck. Driving was inconsistant but 5 wood worked great, 3 wood which I tried 2 stunk overall, irons I was happy with after the first couple and putting was really good but didn't get the numbers but had a bunch of close lip outs. I reached one par 4 290yds with driver to the inside of the fringe and a shorter par 4 250 over water and gaurded by sand and mounds reached two foot on with 5 wood which left a 45 uphiller with multiple breaks. Those are the only two I birdied. Most of the time I use iron off the tees except the par 5's and a couple of the harder par4's but it was fixing to rain and I got the round done in 1 hour and 20 minutes playing as a single.

Sorry to hear about your father ... did his cardiologist make a cardiac rehab program available to him after his surgery? Was this just within the last 5 years or so?

Cardiac medicine has come leaps and bounds in recent years, and needless to say that I would not be anywhere near what I am now had it not been for these advances. I am blessed to have had access to great doctors and state-of-the-art facilities.

Another goal I have this year is to walk 36 holes in a single day ... carrying my own bag. Time will tell if I can do it.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Shot a +8 today thru 12 holes...basically my standard a bit better than bogey golfing...two doubles, four bogeys and the rest pars...good news was that the doubles came in the first four holes, so after getting warm I started playing better...I was feeling the swing better today, esp. in my new weight balanced driver and 3wood...I just got them back yesterday and was the first time on the course with them...only missed one fairway and was hitting longer and straighter than I have either club to date...I was even able to coax a high draw followed by a cut shot from the 3 wood which normally chooses which direction it will play that day for me, never getting both...I now have the D-pw set at D5...next is to play around with wedge weight...

Re: What did you shoot today?

Shot +12 through 15 holes today...birdied the first with a second shot that ended 2 feet from the cup... ...was up and down after that...one of these days it will all come together, until then I will happily continue on shooting a little better than bogey (beats the alternative that I just suffered through)...putting was quite good today...
Shot of the day: besides the birdie above, I made a 20ish foot putt to save a par...fairly benign but it was a good feeling to watch the ball track right into the hole after a few weeks of near misses on this kind of putt...sank the next 3 I looked at as well...why does this happen near the end of the round rather than on the first few holes?

Both of us struggle to score on a cold windy round, made harder by playing the newly opened rebuilt Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Lake 9 - the greens were sodded last fall and are marginally ready for play as the sod seams are still quite evident, but it is going to be a beautiful side when it is "cured".
