Re: What did you shoot today?

I shot a 79 today with a wild 40 on the front. The first 4 holes I jumped out of the gate and I was 2 under. One of my playing partners jokingly said, "You're going for the course record". I double the next hole with a 3 putt, then I triple the following hole with an ob ball.

The next nine was a pretty solid 39, but it had only one bogey, but two doubles. I made a ton of pars today with a few birdies thrown in. My putter was pretty hot as well.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Had Doctor's appointments most of the day, so I took the day off. Late this afternoon, I decided to play Fred Enke GC because I probably won't have another chance to play this week. Got there around 4:15 and just about had the course to myself. I shot 5 over on the front, going bogey, double, bogey to start and then parring out to 9, which I bogeyed.

On the back, I had all pars except for 3 bogeys and a birdie on a par 5. Six over total. Admittedly, I was absolutely able to play at my own pace (I didn't see another soul) and that really helped, but the best thing was my driver. I didn't miss a fairway and at this desert course, that is absolutely essential, a wayward driver ends up in the desert.

I think I should have gone home... I didn't feel well all day, that 'coming down with something' feeling. I think I was coming down with a case of "SISS" - Stinking Iron Shot Syndrome. From a pretty good set of drives, I hit one miserably poor iron shot after another, usually to the wrong place for simple recoveries. After 7 holes, my yardages in had been 141, 138, 138, 173, 140, 173, and 76 (meaning no approach longer than 7 iron). I hit exactly one of those greens. I hit #8 (213 par 3) with a solid 6 iron, but the press on #9 got dunked with my tee shot into the crossing creek. Pistol played a solid round and capped it with a beautiful wedge to a foot on the 9th for a finishing birdie. I could mention here that Pistol is driving the ball as well as I have ever seen anyone drive it, shaping every drive perfectly to the hole and splitting every fairway at around 270. It is sweet to watch.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Here is another example of the mental side of golf, or I am just a mental midget, either way. Today I played a local course. Its not a particularly hard track but I have always struggled on the 10th, a par 5, and 11th hole, a long dogleg right. I was thinkin on my way over there about those two holes and how badly I usually perform on them. Guess what, the starter put us on the back nine to start our round. I got an 8 on 10 and a 7 on 11. After those disasters, I actually played well. Mental Midget!!!!

Two bad swings cost me two double bogeys. One came on the 4th tee with an even match, a yank-hook six iron into the left trees, to a lie with a pencil-thick woody weed directly behind my ball and a huge pine between me and the stick. After a long downhill birdie fell for me at the 8th to pull even, I trotted out my second horrid swing on the 9th tee, blocking a big high slice into the right woods/hazard. I eventually missed a well-struck but misread 12 footer for bogey, and the pain doubled when Pistol missed his 11 footer for par and won the day with his finishing bogey.

Re: What did you shoot today?

I got out for my first time in a couple weeks and played surprisingly well. Maybe it was watching the pros last week. 42/42 - 84. That ties my best this year. I've shot it 3 times. But I had 3 penalty strokes today and only sunk 1 putt over 5', for a par. I had 30 putts but did not putt well. Only one 3-jack, though from about 50'. I missed 3 birdie chances from inside 8'.. one was a 4 footer and I left all of them short. This is my usual course and I couldn't get used to how slow the greens were playing. I pitched in from 30 yards for bogey on 1 after blading my bunker shot over the green into a hazard. I lipped out another chip and chipped & pitched well all day. I got a GIR with a 7-wood from 190 out of a fairway bunker, hit a 4 iron from 185 to 4' and a 6 iron to 6' and missed both birdie putts. It was a beautiful day but for some reason I nearly had the place to myself. I left quite a few out there but feel really good about how I played. Hopefully I'll be able to try it again tomorrow.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Played Dell Urich this afternoon and it was a different experience. I played the front in 5 under and dark caught me. We had a big storm last night that did some tree damage to the course. It also left the course so wet that they couldn't mow the greens. It was like putting in the fairway. Still, it was nice to get out and hit the ball. I ended up playing with other singles. We enjoyed playing together. 5 over wasn't too bad with 3 3-putts.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Played today and lost all feeling for the driver and was hit and miss with my long irons...pretty severely handicapped, I felt like a bird with a broken wing...anyway, I limped around the course with very good wedge play (thanks to earlier in the week practice sessions focused on such) and putting (ditto)...might need to call an instructor in on the driving thing...I feel a little like a guy sawing legs on a table to even it out and quickly running out of wood...

4/13 fairways, 8 gir, some putts 41/37 78...

Had not hit a single ball in the five days since the 101 above... not even a putt on the practice green. I do not understand this game. But today I like it.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Played 9 this morning after work. Didn't feel that good, it has been unusually hot here the last couple of days. Started off with 4 pars on the first 5 holes, so I was starting to like feeling sick. Finished with 3 8's and a 7. Went home drank a bunch of water and threw up. Good times. Playing again Monday with wife and brother in Spokane.

Or the greens, i have never seen such severe run off's. It was afair challenge, let down only by the fact that 90% of approach shots were played with the ball either above or below your feet.

Re: What did you shoot today?

It was so nice to get back on the course today after a 2 day forced layoff due to work and family obligations. Started off bad with a double on an easy par 5, but then things immediately started looking better when I chipped in on the next hole for a bird. I finished the front nine with a 36 and closed with a 41 on the back, for a nice 77.

Nice to play without pain, and to walk, for a change! This was a very close match all day, as neither of us get 2 up at any point. I hit 8 fairways to Pistol's 7, but he hits 12 greens to my 8. I get around with 29 putts to his 33 - it all adds up to us shooting the same score, both of us playing a kind of mediocre round but generally getting our mistakes up and in. The best golf was saved for the finishing par 5 - both of us took advantage of forward tees and gambled drives over the creek that crosses the fairway - Pistol then hit 3 wood on for an eagle putt, while my 5 iron in was very well struck but not enough club. My skip and bite pitch came off perfectly to 3 feet, and our matching birdies were a very nice finish to our so-so rounds.

Glad you are getting back to normal. Just nothing quite as troublesome as not being able to walk without pain.

Played San Ignacio today. They put me with a single and a twosome. The single turned out to be lefthanded also and a really nice guy. We had a very pleasant round together. He is as serious about the game as me. We matched up pretty well. I had him down pretty bad on the front nine, but lost it on two holes on the back with a double and a quad (2 balls OB). I still beat him by 2. I ended up with an 82. Just missed an eagle putt on the back that would have helped my score. We exchanged numbers, maybe I am finally gonna get a golfing buddy in Tucson.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Sunday Aug 17

Played well today…really well…caught glimpses of what could be if I could keep myself under control like I did today for the most part…took extra club on most shots and played within myself…was swinging very easily and smooth for most of the day and hit shots that I committed to but in the end was surprised that I pulled off with an apparent lack of effort…no steering, just trusting and letting go…felt really good…same on the putting greens…I put the new putter I got a few days ago into play for the first time after some alignment adjustments in the living room after work last night…Today I just lined it up and let go…no three putts, lots of close lags, a handful of clutch putts to save par, and a couple of birdies…the feel of the new putter was confidence inspiring…still on the honeymoon, but it feels like I’ve had it for a long time (maybe because the design is very similar to my usual girl), and I continued to make positive strokes all day with good results…bright outlook on that end and for the time being has successfully kicked the Yes putter out of the bag…woods were better than yesterday, but still the Achilles heel of my game as I hit some stinkers today to go with some well hit shots…three wood from the fairway was good, from the tee was long but iffy control…fading when I expected a draw, drawing when I expected straight, you get the idea…. and the driver I hit solidly all day, but was experimenting with left hand head control via strengthening and weakening that hand and had some great ones and the aforementioned stinkers as well…overall a good day, was good out of bunkers and around the greens…weakening both hands for greenside shots has improved my contact and made sand, chips and pitches much easier…not sure the physics behind it, just can feel that the face stays much more solid through impact and stays open on the follow through (weak hands mean open face, but there is no conscious manipulation to keep it open after impact like I had before, and seems locked at impact making for more solid and shot to shot consistency)…just need that tee shot to get me to the next step…the front 9 I hit two fairways…tough to do much with that, but only wound up 3 over with 2 fairways and 3 greens hitting punched four irons like it was my job…positive note is once I warmed up I played with more control and hit some fairways and every green on the back 9 (not as close as I’d like or in the wrong spots, but that kind of grumbling like JP mentioned in the Average golfer laundry list falls on deaf ears…more for my benefit than anything…ended up -1 on the back…irons are really shaping up well…and oh yeah, PB 72 today!!! (I just did the total going shot by shot from memory…I thought it was pretty good leaving the course, but had already switched to Daddy mode and was thinking about the afternoon errands for Mom and baby…something to be said about staying in the zone and not keeping running totals in your head…) Have to share this with the course pro…after a week of following his “program” of practicing as much as playing I’m seeing a difference already…
7/13 fairways…12 gir…31 putts…2 birdies…38/34…+2 72…

Re: What did you shoot today?

87 on a par-71/slope-118 Minneapolis muni. Took a 7 on a front-nine par 3 and a 6 on a back-nine par 3; otherwise it was pars and bogeys. Still haunted by last weekend's 101, so 87 is fine by me.

Re: What did you shoot today?

I think playing on Sunday after playing Saturday may be a bad idea for me as long as it is 100 degrees. I just do not play well on Sunday after playing Saturday. Today was not exception. I didn't play too poorly on the front, but struggled with my driver of all things. I have been hitting 10 plus fairways a round, but today, I just couldn't get my tempo right. I was all over the place. Still managed a scrambling 43 on the front. Then I got tired and fell into little pieces on the back finishing with a 47 for a grand total of 90!!! Just too ugly for words. I don't think I even have one shot to post in the "Best shot of the day" thread.

Re: What did you shoot today?

I played today and remained in a good groove despite being less than 100% physically…seeing how I’ll most likely be less than 100% for the majority of the rest of my life I suppose it’s good practice

I was off in the beginning of the round and cost me a little, missing three greens from the center of the fairway (armsy swipes without enough oomph from the hips leaving it short right), but after warming up everything was clicking…my driver experiment of teeing low (level with the top of the toe of my driver though I’m not teeing up off the toe…just an indicator of how high) and hitting down like a three wood (but taking no turf, just brushing the top of the grass) is phenomenal…I am nailing drives like I never have consistently before…like yesterday, all the setup angles make sense and I can feel how to move into the shot as I do with a three wood or 3 iron…it’s the same swing rather than some manipulated swinging up on the ball t-ball shot like I had been doing…

Ironically, as I am catching the ball just before the bottom of the arc and the club is moving just slightly down to brush the grass, I am still getting plenty of height, and great distance…would have thought that I would lose one or the other as you are supposed to have an upswing according to the golf scholars to reduce backspin…as far as I’m concerned they don’t know anything and I am preserving the feel of one swing shot to shot…

Still have some kinks to iron out, but was very solid for the most part and really long all day with three over 300…best part is that I’m not swinging as “hard” as I can, but because I’m keeping the hands ahead of the club head I’m preserving the lag in the swing and I can definitely feel the whip through impact is faster than before…like an iron!!!...hit the longest drive I ever have on one hole (for that hole) and took a wedge in to 4 feet…I’ll take holes like that all day ….I still need to work on my setup to get more insight into what the shot is going to be and preview the “feels” of a correct shot as the shots that I missed I couldn’t feel it before…

For the most part it was a very good day and everything was behaving…unfounded grumbles include not hitting my spots on the greens and missi
