Re: What did you shoot today?

I shot 4 under at Sawgrass on one of my golf games. I'm really jealous of anyone that can play now. I'm staring at 8 inches of snow outside right now. We just got over 10 inches a week and a half ago. I'm just glad I don't have to deal with the blizzard they are dealing with in northeast. It's worse for us though, because we aren't used to it and we don't have the equipment to handle the mess.

I shot 54 at Chula Vista...front 9. Then I tore up the score card.

Looked like the best afternoon of the week to get out, so a quick nine was the call. A perfect tee ball and an AW from 120 left 30 feet for an opening two putt par, and another perfect drive and nice 9I from 145 left 15 feet for another two putt par at the tough #2. At #3 driver-driver put me in the greenside bunker, and a nice out and a six foot sink put me 1 under. From 156 at #4, my 8I was dead on line 12 feet short, but I misread the birdie putt. #5 was another perfect drive and nice PW on, but the pin was deeper than I realized and I was 20 feet short - two putt par. I made my first error on the tee at #6, just missing the green short and right, but easily two putted from there for par. At #7 it was driver-driver again to just short, but my pitch caught the fringe and died there, and after putting five feet past, I missed the comebacker when it unexpectedly broke toward the back of the green. After a longish wait at the #8 tee, I totally blocked my tee shot and put it in the water right. A penalty drop was followed by an 85 yd LW to 10 feet, and after lots of study I guessed correctly and holed the putt for a fist-pump par. Inspired, I popped another perfect drive at #9, and from 110 smoothed an AW that brushed the flag as it landed, and spun back to less than 3 feet for a round capping birdie and my first 9 under par in 2010!
Mr B in red figures. Nice round ! It looks like we're getting our 1st significant snow of the year... 6-8" they're saying. At least another month for me.

Looking ahead to April, Bill D tells me you are coming for Masters volunteering and staying with them - will you be coming early enuff for a Saturday or Sunday round before your responsibilities begin? Also, the pro tells me we will have a TriFecta in later April - any chance for a quick revisit?

My plans are to leave on Friday to be able to play Sat and Sun with the group. Let me know when the April tourney is and I'll see it I can make it.

Woo Hoo! I will be practiced up and ready for Saturday (if the rain ever stops). I was thinking I would play Sunday as well, but that turns out to be Easter this year, so I know I will be involved in music at church.

Fumai didn't give me dates for the TriFecta when we talked, just 'late April', so I am unsure. I will gladly have you as my guest again, but this time you have to take any winnings! If you haven't noticed in other threads, I used the winnings from the last one to get an Odyssey White Hot #2, which I have grown rather fond of at this writing.

Re: What did you shoot today?

97 Sunday at EastLake cc. My best so far but I have shot that 3 times. This was a good round for me. Only one penalty. The new GPS helped a lot. That's 2 rounds in the 90's this year and one round in the "I don't know 'cause I tore up the score card" category. I've only played 3 rounds of regulation this year because of the football and then the rain. I'm getting a little better.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Thursday 2/18 Gordon Lakes Island 3200 yds
56 F at 1600 tee time - 10 mph west breeze

1 par 4 3
2 par 4 3
3 par 4 5
4 par 4 4
5 par 4 6
6 par 3 3
7 par 5 6
8 par 3 3
9 par 5 4

Score: 37 (+1)

Finally I get to play again, and what a start! A long drive at #1 leaves just 80 yds to the center pin, and I hit LW to 4 feet and birdie. Perfect 3W at #2 leaves 70 yds in - LW again was a bit thin, to 18 feet below the hole, but the putt goes down center cut. Another fine tee ball at #3 leaves 8I from 152, but I tug it - OK I pull it - and hit the pines and drop 30 yards short and make bogey. I rip a high long drive at the dogleg right 4th, and land at the 150 marker, but another only tugged 9I is 35 feet left - a lousy approach putt leaves 6 feet, but I cram that in for par. Then disaster - I draw my drive at #5 into the fairway bunker, and overswinging, hit the lip and leave it in there. Then I come out left of everything, and chunk my pitch 4th shot into the greenside bunker; a great blast out from there to 3 feet saves double bogey. Then I turned back into a golfer and hit the island green par 3 6th, but miss my 15 footer. I push my tee ball at #7 and have to play up the parallel #3; two irons later I am on, but make a poor three putt. From 190 at the par 3 8th into the breeze, I stoke a 5I within 20 feet and just miss the bird. The last hole is a layup par 5, and I sweetheart two 4 irons and a SW to 20 feet below the hole, and it is nothing but net as I finish the up-and-down round with a third birdie!

There's nothing quite like the feeling of a birdie, birdie, start........unless it's a birdie finish to remove the bad taste of a bad mid-round hole.

When Bill told me "late April", I guess he meant "late March", because today there was a sign-up sheet for the Spring TriFecta, to be held March 27.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Feb 21

Been working on things and haven't kept score in awhile...did today though to see where I'm at...my technique is getting much better but I definitely got worse before I started getting better...not quite to where I was at the turn of the year scoring wise, but it's not far away....

Not too bad today…was feeling a little rough in the beginning and dropped two strokes over the first four holes, but after I loosened up I hit my stride a little better and finished out +1 the rest of the way around…no birdies today, but I hit half the greens and got up and down a little better than half the time for the score…several near misses on approaches, played well for the most part…

I figured out how to hit my driver again…lost it for a little while there but I freed up my lead shoulder and am cranking it again, but more importantly hitting where I want it to go…makes the whole game easier…

I switched out my putter which was giving me no joy for the bettinardi…much, much better today…distance and line were much improved and I wasn’t scared of the three footers like I have been…didn’t hole any birdies though, but all things considered I was rolling it much better…

Something clicked today…was swinging much better and more accurately…I did a fundamental review last night and worked out my backswing so that I was getting into position much better behind the ball with less manipulation…

Played a hybrid in place of the three iron today mainly due to the super soft and wet conditions…hit that thing great; it’s staying in the bag until further notice though the grip needs changing…

Something I’m going to work on is distance control with the irons off the wet ground…the fairways were a little shaggy as they are when it rains every day here and the crews can’t get around to mow like they normally do, and it is essentially like playing out of light rough…hit a couple fliers today from the wet grass, and hit a couple others heavy where I came in too steep and trapped rather than picked the ball…

Good times!

9/11 fairways, 7 gir, 24 putts, no birdies, +3 for 14…

76 on a 71.4/117 track. Even on the front with one double and 2 birdies. 4 over on the back with one birdie, one double due to a pulled wedge hitting a cart path and 3 bogeys.

Re: What did you shoot today?

I finally got to play this weekend after almost 3 months. I don't see how you guys in the north do it. I actually played better than I expected and shot a respectable 74. If I could have gotten a couple putts to drop it could have been a really great round. Hopefully the cold/wet weather is behind us and I can get out more often.

It's not like we have a choice. It's not unusual for me to play very well the first time out after a long lay-off but the rust always takes over in subsequent rounds. It generally takes me 4-5 rounds and some extended range time to better my first round of the season.

Isn't it just like a golfer to not play for 3 months, shoot 74, and bemoan that he would've shot better if not for a balky putter. I'm glad to hear that you got to play. I'm currently under a severe winter storm watch. There's 8 inches of snow on my deck and it's still falling hard so it'll be awhile before I can get in that long awaited first round.

Re: What did you shoot today?

47-52 for 99 at MS National

Had a par on #1 and not another one til 8...2 pars,4 bogies,2 doubles and a triple.it was wet and windy to say the least, and me not playing sense November did'nt help.i started off hitting the driver well but that did'nt last long.

There was alot more water on the back and chipping was very tuff, not the first par. 5 bogies,1 double, and 3 triples...boy i was ready for it to end.

I guess i shoulda went to the range before atempting to play, but the weather in the south has been a little strange this year

Things still look the same around here,i have looked around a little from time to time but just been to busy to post or reply.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Feb 20 (Breezy 35 - 52 degree day) White tees 6500 yards Island/Lake View

Hole 1 par 4 4
Hole 2 par 4 4
Hole 3 par 4 5
Hole 4 par 4 4
Hole 5 par 4 4
Hole 6 par 3 3
Hole 7 par 5 5
Hole 8 par 3 3
Hole 9 par 5 5

Hole 1 par 4 6
Hole 2 par 4 3
Hole 3 par 5 6
Hole 4 par 3 3
Hole 5 par 4 3
Hole 6 par 3 3
Hole 7 par 5 6
Hole 8 par 4 4
Hole 9 par 4 4

Gross scores : SAM 37/38-75(+3)

Pretty much a total turnaround from last Saturday (when I shot 85, my worst in a few years) - I mostly had my game, especially the irons, under some control. The first sign that it could be a better day came at the second hole, when I made a 12-14 footer to save par on a loosely played hole. One bogey and a bunch of pars later, I turned at 1 over. Then I started the back side with a poor drive into the fairway bunker that found a tough lie near the lip, and the hole never got any better as I hacked my way to a double bogey. I came back with a sweet six iron to 10 feet at the difficult 11th, and a sweeter birdie when I made the putt. Unfortunately I followed that with a 3 putt bogey, but at #14 I ran down a 40 footer for a surprise birdie. I bogeyed the last par 5 when my layup second shot got caught by a gust and ballooned, dropping in the hazard, but a nice pair of pars finished the profitable day at +3.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Personal Bests are always worth shouting about. Nice job!

Now you're chasing 95 and my money says that, with your new sticks and obvious enthusiasm, you'll be chasing an even lower personal best soon.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Thanks guys! Had a great day. Geezer shaft was working. Best thing I got is the igolf neo gps. I chose the right stick all day on the approach shot. Pin high more than not. Now if I can just them to hit the green. Had a good chip shot this day. Had a good shot at a 15' bird on a par 5...end up bogey. That will make you mad...Ha! Just wish I had been at EastLake. Chula Vista is a hard track. I'll have to take a rain check on the drink Big. Been one week on the wagon. I had my share of that. Time to quite. First round I played where I wasn't faced the night before...may be something to that. Ha!

Good luck with that too. Been there/done that and I'll never go back. It's nice waking up in the morning not feeling like .

Re: What did you shoot today?

Thanks! Just booked me a round for Eastlake Sunday then had a look at the weather. Supposed to rain cats and dogs. Ordered a lightweight golf rain suit. It'll be a good experience for me. Ha! I'll learn what it's like for some of you guys who play in the rain. Man it's raining a lot this year! Must be global warming...

I've got about 14 inches of "global warming" on my deck right now.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Feb 27

(written on Feb 28)
Played yesterday…didn’t strike the ball bad at all but wasn’t hitting greens…didn’t matter much though in the end though I wasn’t satisfied with my iron play…short game was good and I was rolling the ball nice…

Don’t remember too much about yesterday (supplanted with today…my memory cells seem to be only able to record and hold one round at a time)…I do remember that I was -2 after the first two then cooled off…play was molassess slow yesterday since a group from Thailand decided to hold a tournament of 60 people but failed to notify the course (common here with the golf clubs and lack of tee time reservations)…anyhow, they flooded an already busy Saturday morning and it took me nearly 4 hours to play 10 holes before quitting…

Didn’t write the stats down yesterday, but here’s what I remember…

All the fairways, 2 GIR, two birdies, two bogeys, even par for 10 holes…

Re: What did you shoot today?

Feb 28

Played today again…had a good round…made some progress in that I sorted perfect ball positions for driver and punch shots…figured where to put the ball and how to align to it to hit both on the button…driving was longer today as well due to the setup alignment tweaks and ball positioning; I was able to go after the ball with little fear…

Woods weren’t great, which I attribute to trying to copy the success of the driver setup…was hitting them well the last few rounds and should just stick with that way of hitting the ball…

Putting was ok but not great…had a few birdie chances slide by the hole…

I’d forgotten what I’d been doing with the irons that was getting good results…I remembered somewhat, but need some range time for reaffirmation…they weren’t great today and I missed some clear approaches I ought to do better on…

Short game was good but not great…good enough anyway…I did sort out a ball position that I can count on off tight lies though via a routine to space myself exactly to the ball to find the spot just below the bottom of the swing for the ball position…very soild contact on the feathery little chips, so I came away with something…

I hit the greens on all the par threes but one(193, 200, 147, 195) and was two inches into the first cut on that one I missed but hit the spot I was aiming for which lay directly downhill from the hole (178)…I feel like it makes a difference in scoring but not sure it really does; would have if I could drop the putts…

Wasn’t pleased with my approaches but was still a hair over 50% for GIR…missed two approaches with a new wedge I put in the bag (new old wedge…it’s a vokey 52* like my last one but the shaft is a heavier s400, there’s an extra 4 strips of lead tape on the head and the shaft is an inch longer than my other one which is playing havoc with my gaps; it felt good to swing and I liked the extra inch in terms of address, but it goes 10 yards further apples to apples)…the shots were on line but straight over the greens…

I’ve got to make a decision with the fw’s…the stiffness of the shafts are distracting and I have to do one thing with one and something else with the other…I hit both well but generally get off track if I go back and forth between the two in a short space of time on the course…I also don’t like that the feels and address angles don’t carry over club to club…honestly speaking, I probably hit the softer shaft a little longer than the stiffer one, but have tighter dispersion with the stiffer one and like the more solid feel of it hitting off the deck…best solution would be to get another 5w head same as what I’m playing and try a stiffer shaft in it since that’s the way I’m leaning; I don’t really want to #$%#$% with success and pull the shaft out of the one in the bag…maybe I’ll just wait until I can pick one up on my next trip back and see if I can find the same shaft as in my 3w right now…

I need to practice putting…if I write that down here maybe it will help push me to do it…can’t stand putting practice; it’s like going to the dentist; necessary, appreciate the results, don’t enjoy the process…

I was out early today and there were a lot of worm casts on some of the greens that weren’t mowed yet…hit a chip on one green that kicked two feet left, landed then jumped a foot right, then popped up on that line, then kicked right then left…in the end the ball stayed pretty much on line but was interesting watching how it did so…

I figured out a way to hit the pw on full swings that is more accurate than what I’d been doing...I’m holding off on the release now and essentially blocking it with a little out to in arc which cuts it a little…holds the line well and comes in soft...good times…

10/11 fairways, 8 GIR, 24 putts, 1 birdie, even par for 16 holes…

Re: What did you shoot today?

I played the first 18 of the season today and i shot a.......BUNCH. It was the first time I've even hit a ball this year so it was pretty much what I expected. My driver was working pretty good, but everything else was pretty bad, except the time I had. I had a great time! It was in the low 50's and not much wind to speak of, it was very nice. Monday it is supposed to reach 70, too bad I'll be at work.

Re: What did you shoot today?

Mar 3

Played today, was pretty good…managed to get in 13 holes even with a busy course…even played with a stranger and didn’t fall apart; not too shabby for me…

Was pretty tired today but was swinging good…clubs felt really heavy though…I’ve got some kind of a flu bug; my kids and wife are all wiped out but I’ve managed to just get a touch of it…woods were a bear today though and I wasn’t finishing my swing half the time….had something weird in my release as well; it wasn’t hinging properly and I was getting hung up…might have been my grip or hand position; not sure…I figured out how to play it and just stuck with that…

Iron swing felt good and I was hitting the target more often than not…even hit with a 4 iron from 185 up a hill…didn’t blow any iron shots like I have been; misses were due to misjudgments, wrong clubbing, overworking or being out of position off the tee; hit everything solid which is more than I could say for other recent rounds…

Next round I’m dropping the hybrid again for the 3i…it is just too different from all the other clubs and I’m either on or not with it; there is no carryover feel like I get from iron to iron or fw to driver…I just can’t count on it…

Changed putters again and putted ok today…can’t decide which one fits my eye better…need to pick one and practice that…think I’ll stick with the one today; got two birdies anyway with it from somewhere around 15 ft each one…

Going to try to see the pro next week…it is coming along though…

10/10 fairways, 8 GIR, 21 putts, 2 birdies, even for 13 holes…

Re: What did you shoot today?

Played a little today, the course was really crowded and I packed it in after 12 and three and a half hours and spent the rest of my golf morning at the clubfitter trying some stuff and getting some shafts changed…finally following through with putting in heavier, longer, even length matching shafts in the scoring clubs…I will now have the same length shaft on my 9i, pw and 52* wedge with progressively heavier static and swingweights…used s400 black nickel shafts that I picked up awhile back…also cutting down the shaft on the Adams to 44.5” and pulled the shaft in the nike sumo2 head (quattrotech md) in favor of the fubuki at a longer length; the shallow face made the club shorter than the rest of my drivers and it was disconcerting…we’ll see how they play…

Wasn’t that great off the tee, missed some fairways, put one in the water, finished +2 for 12 holes which wasn’t bad considering…not many GIR yesterday either, was inexplicably hitting left breaking curveballs yesterday, but the short game was on and putting was good…

6/9 fw, 3 GIR, 17 putts, one birdie, +2 for 12…

Re: What did you shoot today?

Mar 7

Today was something different…I didn’t feel that great coming to the course, still working on getting rid of the Hershey squirts that I’ve had for a few days, and I fell asleep in a chair watching the games last night waking up at 2:30am with a stiff neck…so I wasn’t expecting much…

Something apparently clicked in me because I haven’t had a ballstriking day like today in awhile…hitting the ball was about as easy as deciding on where I wanted it to land…butter…but to add to my physical issues, I managed to leave the house in such a rush I forgot my 9 iron which is my exclusive just off the green club, and my wedges were some older ones that were different lofts than what I am used to using along with a pw from another set…boils down to not having much touch in the greenside game in the beginning and I managed to drop two shots over the first five, both from lies less than a foot off the green…that I birdied the other three that I managed gir was the story of the day…

After getting warmed up, my wedge feel was better but didn’t use it much…had one more up and down chance and blew that one too, short sided but very makeable…looking forward to getting my wedges back…I missed one fairway today, and that one was pretty bad…hit a hook off an elevated tee with my 5 wood that hit the upper branches of the trees lining the fairway and ricocheted well into the next fairway…I managed to get the ball over the 30 ft treeline, over a lake on the other side of the trees and land just beyond the front edge pin location for a birdie putt…didn’t make it but was worth a pat on the back all the same…

My woods weren’t bad today, but not as good as the rest of my game…they felt really heavy; just tired I guess…putting was ok (4 birdies) but I blew a 4 ft birdie putt, left another birdie putt in the throat of the cup 2 revolutions short and burned the edge on three others…great could have been spectacular and honestly speaking, my putting needs work…

…but I can’t really complain…

9/10 fairways, 10 GIR 22 putts, 4 birdies, -1 for 13 holes…

Re: What did you shoot today?

Very ugly 90. 43 on the front that started with 3 doubles in a row. Settled down after that, but only managed 47 on the back in 30+ winds. Tough day.

Hey, at least you're playing. After weeks of being buried under snow and ice I finally saw a small bare spot of my lawn today.
