How do YOU do in foul weather?

Playing in the rain…
I never was much of a rain player until I moved here…watching the Open today I was reminded of the conditions that many of you face…we have two seasons here; rainy and dry (fairly…it still rains, just not every day)…tropical showers are generally brief, except during the heart of the rainy season, and they are always steamy…I tried wearing a jacket one day and started to sweat uncontrollably and was as wet inside the jacket after 4 holes as I would have been without it…always shorts and short sleeves around here…watching the guys on the tube with the raingear, winter hats, Phil with the golf ski gloves, got me thinking about playing bundled up…I’m not good at all with a jacket, and feel out of sorts playing in long sleeves…played in a sweater and ski hat the last time I was in the States (the most I could wear despite it being -2*C at the start of the round) and played horribly…some of the waterproofs available are advertised as being non constrictive, and some even claim that they are noise proof (nylon on nylon drives me nuts when I’m trying to swing)…I play pretty much the same in the rain here, but am sure that if it were 5*C it would be a completely different story…
Are you foul weather players and how do you do when the weather is up?

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I don't play in the rain unless I have to. I played all winter though. Even though I wore light layers, I didn't have as much movement and to be honest, I think this helped me. I played better all winter than I've been playing since it warmed up.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I pretty much cave in bad weather. Wind I can deal with, relative cold too, but cold rain... or even rain in general (although being in Colorado I've never played in a warm rain )... anyway rain I find very difficult.

Four years ago I passed up a chance to play for free at one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world that you never heard of (Sanctuary), because the weather was so nasty that I knew it wouldn't be the the experience that it should be. 50 degrees, windy and steady all day rain.... just wasn't worth it, even though you can't beg or buy your way onto this course, you have to be invited, usually to a charity tournament. At charity auctions a round for a foursome typically goes for $3000 and up.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I can remember a time when I played in any type of weather. Of course, I was lucky to get out once a week, sometimes every other week.

My situation changed. I get out quite a bit more now. I can be much more selective of when I play, I don't feel this burning desire to head out to the course when I know that I'm gonna be wet.

Don't mind the wind, don't mind the cold. Don't mind a passing shower in what is otherwise a relatively okay day. But heading out to play in the pouring rain interests me not.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I have played in all kinds of weather, even been hailed on once. I do ok in cold weather and actually like the challenge of wind. I have played in rain at 45*, but I wouldn't do it again. I don't fair well on a wet course because I count on some roll off my driver for added distance and I am a "digger" taking pretty good divots with my irons, so wet conditions really mess with my game.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I hate rain but really have fun in wind ven high winds since I learned my golf at the coast on a couple of "links"type courses where days without wind were rare. I find the up country players who hit the ball high really battle to to change their technique and since we're quite a competitive bunch wind give me the edge.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I play OK in the wind and also the rain but when they both happen together, YUK!!!!!!!

Yesterday at The Open was typical British coastal weather. If the wind had not been blowing it would have rained non stop and play may not have been competed. The Tide is also a factor and it can take good or bad weather out\in with it.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I'm not a rain player at all. I hate even a little mist to be coming down.

I guess other than rain, it depends on what your definition of "foul" is. We play a lot in the winter months and sometimes it's around freezing when we tee off. I've had some of my best rounds when the temperature is below 40, so if you consider that "foul" I guess I do alright.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I don't mind playing in the wind, and I have played well in pretty windy conditions. I've also had some decent scores in the rain, but HEAVY rain can be too much for me. If my feet are soaked and I can't grip the club and the brim of my cap needs eavestroughing, I find it hard to score.

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I'm on and off in foul weather, much like regular weather! I find if were on a golf trip where we are going to play no matter what I just toss on my rain gear and it doesn't bother me (like last summer in Michigan). But if we're just out and about for a round and the rains come, I'm not as willing to deal with it and it affects my game more because I think more about getting out of the rain then hitting my shots.

If I was getting paid to play like the big boys, I think I'd be like Watson and have fun with it. The conditions are the conditions, so in a situation like they are in, might as well have fun as not.

Based on my limited knowledge, I would say if you intend to play in Scotland, you had better not mind the rain or wind...

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

I never head out in more than a drizzle. I'll keep going if it starts raining while I'm playing though... within reason. I'm not going to stay out there in a torrential downpour. I had one of the best rounds of my life in a steady downpour. I'm more likely to continue in the rain if I'm playing well. I don't mind hitting in the rain or getting wet but it's too much of a hassle trying to keep everything dry.

Fortunately in Johannesburg rain generally means lightning - the siren goes and it's off to the pub for an hour or two!! So we don't get too wet!!

Re: How do YOU do in foul weather?

When I was a kid I loved playing golf in the wind and rain, whenever that rare ocassion happened. And I used to look at it as a challenge.

Nowadays, however, I simply will not play golf in the rain. Absolutely refuse to. And it's not usually very windy in Southern California, so I rarely play in those conditions.

But I don't mind playing in the wind. I still joyfully look at it as a challenge. I never attempt to battle the wind. I hit a bunch of low 3-irons all day.
