How much do you spend on golf?

Another thread made me wonder about how much we spend on this game.

Hundreds if not thousands of dollars on range fees, equipment, driving range, apparel.

How much do you spend / month on fees?
How much do you spend / year on equipment?
How much do you spend / month on food/beer at the course?
How much do you spend / year on miscellaneous?

I will respond to this thread after I break out the calculator..

Has the current state of the economy changed your ways?

Re: How much do you spend on golf?

Fortunately, where I am, the copper mines are going full blast, so we haven't seen the drop off in the economy plaguing the rest of the country. So, it really hasn't changed my golfing habits. I am sure it would if things got tight.

As to what I spend, I play an average of 4 times per week at an average of $30 per round. The afternoon rounds during the week are much less expensive than the weekend rounds. So that's $120 per week times 4.3 weeks per month so we're talking $520 per month. I buy equipment occasionally, but probably less than $1000 per year including balls, etc.

I will spend very little on range balls and/or food on the course, so I'll say $50 per month.

Based on these numbers, I spend roughly $8000 per year. Not too expensive a hobby compared to fishing or boating or even hunting for that matter. It does make me realize I should probably look at joining a club soon to cut my monthly expenses for greens fees, etc.

Have not changed my habits much. Still belong to my club, still play at least once a week. Hit balls on the range maybe once a week.

Re: How much do you spend on golf?

How much do you spend / month on fees? $120 Those are monthly dues and rounds at other courses. 1440

How much do you spend / year on equipment? Roughly 200 on balls, upkeep on my golf cart about 200 per year, I don’t buy new clubs every year. Maybe 500 total on equipment.

How much do you spend / month on food/beer at the course? That’s a tough question, usually I buy at least one drink per day, once a week maybe a hot dog, I usually just ask for a cup of ice with a lid and a straw and I fill it up at the water fountain. It’s probably around 400 bucks.

How much do you spend / year on miscellaneous? Gas to and from the golf course? It’s a 15 mile round trip, so in my gas sipping pickup that’s one gallon, 4 bucks a pop. I probably get in 150 rounds a year (that may be a low estimate), so at today’s prices that’s around 600 bucks.

So probably per year it’s around 3000 dollars. That’s not bad for the number of hours I’ve spent on the golf course.

I haven't changed my habit since the economy has gone downhill. In my area the economy had already taken a hit and leveled off. Hopefully the worst is over.

Re: How much do you spend on golf?

I think the last time this thread topic came up I went through some heavy-duty math. My annual golf expenses came out somewhere between $3000 - $3500. That includes all greens fees, golf balls, minor equipment replacements (new clubs comes under separate funding), usually a golf trip, range time (what's that?), etc. I've spent a bit less this year because I've been more diligent in finding the good deals and playing later in the day on weekends due to the high gas prices.

Re: How much do you spend on golf?

I have a pretty good deal on green fees at our muni (county operated) home course...$100 per year plus from $4 to $8 additional green fee to play, depending on weekday or weekend. Stall rental for my cart is $30/month but I don't ride often. I play out of town about once a month at another $100, so my fees/year probably ends up being between $2500-3000.

Food/drinks-very little, less than $300
Equipment/miscellaneous-less than $1000

I would guess that including gas for the 15 mile roundtrip to the course, fees, equipment and everything is generally not much more than $3000.

The true measure of one's commitment to golf is not how much one spends on golf, but how much one has left after spending on golf.

Re: How much do you spend on golf?

How much do you spend / month on fees? $200 per over an 8 month season. More if we have a mild winter. $1600

How much do you spend / year on equipment? Not much. I bought some new shoes this year and a few dozen balls. $200

How much do you spend / month on food/beer at the course? $0. Once or twice a year, tops. I'll get something to eat if I get caught in a storm that's passing through. Make it $10

How much do you spend / year on miscellaneous? Gas that I wouldn't otherwise burn would probably be the biggest expense here. $500 ?
A weekly pass to the PGA next week, but that's a 1-time thing $350

So rounding up $2500 give or take a couple hundred

Has the current state of the economy changed your ways? Somewhat. I no longer drive 60 miles to play a course on a whim.

One thing that could change my ways would be if my wife were to read this. She basically knows how much I play but I don't think she's done the math.

Re: How much do you spend on golf?

I don't spend that much. Most of my clubs and balls are gifts from various family members. Greens fees and clothes are my biggest expense and I buy a new pair of shoes every season. I'm not going to tell you what I spend on clothes. I bring my own drinks and snacks. If the course is further away, we'll stay for a drink and/or dinner.

If you would just get yourself a couple of pairs of cargoes and a few matching polo's, you could save a lot on clothes.. Oh, yeah, and keep those shoes clean they will last a couple of seasons...
