What do you stink at?

What shots are most difficult for you?
Continuing in my quest for the perfect golf game I try and be aware of what shots are tough for me so that I can work on them at the range and avoid them when playing…lately, I have been struggling with controlling a fade…I’ll set up what feels the same and draw one and then slice the next…at best I feel like it is a 15-20yd +/- dispersion wise with a 5 iron in my hand…straightish and draws I can draw a bead and am full of confidence, but I just can’t get the feel for a fade and will only play it on a layup or if I am blocked and will settle for anything on or just off the green…also struggling with the three wood off the deck…I’ve been pulling it lately and while I’ll squeeze of a good one, the next might be pulled…I’m hitting my irons well right now, just can’t get the three to hold a consistent line off the deck…I hit it great off the tee, and off the deck I connect solidly and get good height and distance, but I can feel the swing break down a little sometimes and then there goes the pull hook…it happens too often for my tastes…I’m also not the best lag putter in the world (or at my course, foursome, with a stranger that I join who just started playing…) and need some work on this…what do you stink at?

Re: What do you stink at?

Lately I stink at fairway woods: 5W, 7W, and even 9W sometimes. Not making clean contact. Catching them thin. Topping or toe-hitting them. I think the problem is caused by slight slouch at address, playing ball too far forward in stance, trying to kill it, and combinations thereof.

My range routine has focused on wedges and driver, mainly. Now the woods are clamoring for attention.

Re: What do you stink at?

I'm also a poor lag putter.

My big weakness though is iron shots off the deck, in particular anything longer than a 6 iron. I just hit all my irons quite weakly, no distance and no penetration. I am working on a more compact swing that channels energy more efficiently - when I get it working thie distance improves to near-respectability and the ball flight is stronger.

Re: What do you stink at?

Definitely long bunker shots. I just don't have anywhere to practice these shots, so it's a given that they will cause me the most problems.

Lately 3 wood off the deck......topping. Although this past Saturday seemed to have finally figure out the possible problem (to far forward in stance).

Re: What do you stink at?

I stink at short-sided chips from the rough when the ball is in thick grass no more than 2 feet off the green. I am NOT comfortable opening up the blade and taking a good-sized swing with the flag so close that I could almost grab it. I am more inclined to just try and poke it out lightly. The problem is, I know I have the tendancy to decelerate on those because it's such a short shot, SO, I make sure to get through it and it ends up going to far!

I got so inconsistant with that shot that I don't even bother with it anymore. If I am so far away that only THE PERFECT 3-wood off the ground is getting me there, I am taking my medicine and laying up close to the front of the green with a comfortable long iron.

Re: What do you stink at?

I have a tendency to pull hook my long irons if I am not very careful, probably the ugliest shot in my arsenal of bad shots...

I will practice these shots with more of a flopping method on the chipping/putting green and execute with pretty good results. But when I get into this situation on the course, I fear skulling it over the green and go back to my 'safe' method. Sometimes I'd rather just barely get it onto the green leaving another 6 foot putt than shoot it across the green and look like a horses behind to the rest of my 4-some.

Driver !!!!

Should just take it out of the bag - 10 degree loft isn't enough for my swing speed. But, I won it, and that was the highest loft I could choose from in lefty....

Re: What do you stink at?

My biggest weakness are the mid irons. Sometimes I would rather have a 7 wood or 5 wood in my hand rather than a 5 or 6 iron.

My 3 wood is the next weak spot, I slice is horridly. It's the only club I do slice, but sometimes it fits in my bag nicely since I need ithat shot every now and then.

Re: What do you stink at?

.

I can honestly say that I can't really think of anything that I "stink" at.

I could do better with long irons off the deck, or long bunker shots and sometimes fairway woods, but I look at those as just things that need a bit more practice. I have hit many good long irons, long bunker shots, etc., so I know that I can, but I don't hit those shots often enough to stay plugged in to the nuances and as such my technique fades a bit, but I don't see that as any big deal... I just need to practice more.

Re: What do you stink at?

There's nothing I'm atrocious at, although lag putting can sometimes be an issue...also, long irons I suppose. And occasionally I've got driver issues. But then again, besides mid and short range putting, I'm not superb at anything either. Guess that's why my game's not too good and not too bad.

Re: What do you stink at?

I find the 280 yard carry over water from a heavy lie in the rough to be a fairly tough one. That and pretty much any kind of chip right now.

Same here, plus fairway bunker shots. None of the nearby (within 10 miles) courses have areas with bunkers set up to practice this shot.

Re: What do you stink at?

I find club selection quite difficult in general and am working on really thinking about the shot and what would be a) safest b) closest. Also I find it hard not to aim though or under trees to try and just get 100 yds when I would of been better aiming sideways, out of danger and only lost one stroke.

During my last round it was clear that when I was not committed to and concentrating on and imagining the shot - either putting or off the tee, then things went wrong. The putts and shots where I was really focused on and committed to were actually better than I had imagined!

This actually showed me that one of my biggest flaws might be not believing that I can hit the shot I want to and I let myself turn into a hit-and-hoper before I have struck it. This must stop now!
