Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

These clubs are cast cavity backs with regular flex steel shafts. There is a good offset on these clubs. This particular set is not oversized. This set consists of 3 - PW.

These were procured from Amazon.com for roughly $175 (there was also a rebate involved but I forget how much + free shipping). I may have bought one of the last sets made as I have not seen an unused set for sale since last year.

I do not know how long and for what years the 845's were produced, if you know, please add a reply.

They look remarkably well for cavity backs. The lettering paint has held up. The metal has held up well - which I will admit the shorter irons have struck rock and been hit off of cart paths a few times.

Can hit the longer irons fairly well about 70% of the time, not sure if that's a testement to the clubs offset or not

The grips are Armour inscribed one piece rubber which has held up as expected. My particular set is close to needing regripped after 1.5 years of play (about 75-80 games)

Overall I give them an 'A' rating. Price was right, they look good, work good, and are rugged. I don't see them very much on the course or in other players bags which (IMHO) is a plus. While I flirt with the idea of buying a more expensive set of irons (and I will eventually), my mind will always know that there wasn't a thing wrong with these 845's.

Re: Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

The 845s were (are still) a good set of irons. I wish Tommy Armour could make a rebound. New sets of their Silver Scot forged blade and cavity back can be had for $199.

The 845s Silver Scot was made from 1988 to 1998.

Thank you for that information. I agree with wanting Armour to rebound. Doubt they ever will now that they're paired up with Ram under the Huffy Corp.

This is all I've ever used. Would like to try clubs with no offset to see what the difference is...

Re: Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

The 845's were the club to have when I started playing. It was the first set that I bought for myself. A great club to learn the game with.

Re: Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

I play 845fs Silver Scot irons, lefties. They are from 2003, took me forever to find that out until I found an archived Golf Digest article from the 2003 PGA Show. Armour sold more than 600,000 sets of 845 Silver Scot irons, and they are often considered one the top irons sets ever made, right behind Ping Eye 2's.

I got mine online, brand new, when I started playing in 2005 at the advice of my brother in law (7 hdcp). Got literally the last set of 845 lefties a golf retailer named Austads' (they are out in MN, IA, NE, around there) had in stock. Got them for $199 shipped. They do hold up really really well, and I really like them. I get really good ball flight out of them.

I also would like to see Armour rebound, I'd like to see a big OEM buy them out to have a presence in a lower market, ie Callaway with Ben Hogan, Taylor Made with Maxfli, etc.

Can I ask you about when that was? I am also interested in the history of the 845's.

Re: Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

I purchased them in 1994, right before I went into high school. It seemed that all of the guys on the golf team had them, so being the independent thinker that I was, I bought myself a set. Still have them in the closet at my parents' house. Planning on giving them to my son at some point (he'll probably only want them for a week since who knows what will be available then).

Re: Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

I have a set of 845FS graphite shafted irons that I bought new about a year and a half ago. They are a very easy to hit club and have a very nice soft feel when properly struck. They do very well on off center strikes, also, and seem about as forgiving as anything else I have played. I have a couple of other sets of irons that I rotate back and forth with, but the Armours offer a lot of technology for the money (got them new for $109 from RockBottom golf) on a closeout, and I really enjoy playing them. I could easily live with these irons if forced to choose only one set. I really like their light feel and setup. They have a thinner top line and the sole is a bit more narrow than a lot of irons, and they play well out of the rough. Not too many golf clubs can be called true classics these days with OEMs changing models every time you blink. But Tommy Armour has sold over 600,000 sets of the 845 iron series, and they are one of the most popular irons ever made, according to what I have read. I would call these some real classic, no nonsense, no gimmick, golf clubs, and they are able to hold their own with most of today's models.

I really like my 845FS irons too. Got them off eBay for under $200, including the SW and LW.

Re: Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scot Irons

I've got a set of 845fs that my dad gave me after the guy that won them in a company golf tourney couldn't accept them due to "conflict of interest" (he was a client of the company). I tried using them once and found them a bit short at standard length. Didn't seem to fit my son, either. They did come in handy when a friend visited and borrowed them for a round. Since then have sat in my garage for at least 2 years.

I've been thinking of getting a new set of irons fitted to my specs. Maybe I should consider having these lengthened and adjusted to fit. I'll have to have some fitting done to find out if graphite or steel would be best for my swing. I just wonder if having 8 clubs reshafted or lengthened and adjusted to fit would be cheaper than a new set of component clubs?
