Re: Callaway Big Bertha

I got the 2006 BB irons late in 2006.
Set includes 5-PW,AW,SW,LW
Shafts - OEM Graphite, regular
+1/2" and 1 degree upright
Grips - Golfpride Multi Compound mid-size
Purchased at Callaway Fitting Center, Neshanic Valley, NJ

Performance: These irons do what their reputation says - they forgive off-center hits and usually get you somewhere close to where you were aiming. When hit "on the screws" the performance is as good as any other iron I've played. Distances are about the same as with previous sets, and distance control is improving. I can "feel" when I hit it flush and when I don't quite get it, so there is some degree of club feedback. This is the first set of irons I've owned with graphite shafts and I have to concentrate on tempo and not overswing. Ball flight is HIGH, which is what I wanted, and I still get the "old draw." I am having issues out of greenside bunkers - but that could be solved with some practice.

Aesthetics: the chrome head really "dings" up quickly, and the face of the club shows every mis-hit (and there were many) that didn't quite meet the grooves squarely. This doesn't bother me too much as I intend to keep these for a good long while - and I don't want to be bothered with iron headcovers. I've gotten the "shovel" comments from some of the guys I've played with. Kinda funny since these same guys have 460cc drivers, hybrids, and exotic putters - but they claim to be traditionalists as they struggle to hit their forged blades. I don't say a word!

Value: I am satisfied with the purchase. They might be on the higher end of the average price for new irons, but I intend to keep these for many years. I knew what I was looking for - forgiveness - and I got it. I also know that Callaway is a leader in customer service, and that means something to me.

Disclaimer: Before buying any golf club make sure you hit it first and know what you are getting. Proper fitting is invaluable. There are a ton of quality irons available and half the fun of purchasing is trying out as many as you can prior to purchase.

Re: Callaway Big Bertha

Excellent review - very thorough and informative. One of the best I've read here on GRW.
