Re: Callaway X-20

I liked them when I demoed them, but when I first got them, I thought I made a mistake. In fact, pulled my old Pings out and put them back in the bag. I was on the range & the club pro made a suggestion or two and all of a sudden I hitting the ball pretty good. So I figure maybe it was the swinger and not the clubs so I pulled out the X-20's again and boy was I stroking the ball the best I have all year (with irons). I am very happy with these clubs especially impressed with the way they look at address, but for a high handicapper especially easy to get them in the air. I did have the X 90 shaft (true temper) put in them which is also a high flight shaft, so I am sure that helps. But together they have a good high flight and allows me to hold the hard bent grass greens that we have in the south now. I am as comfortable with my irons as I have ever been.

Re: Callaway X-20

I'm glad you said that....I've ordered the X-20 Tours with the Precision-X flighted shafts....still haven't arrived yet (I guess they take extra for left-handers, unless my name was Mickelson :-). I started thinking more and more about the flighted shafts thinking, I never tried them much up and down the irons, just mostly with a 6-iron, although it felt very sweet the 3-4 times I demo'd them (yea, it takes me a while to make up my mind). I went down in flex from standard but mainly because my current irons were ultralight steel, which had me wondering am I going to a stiffer shaft that what I've been used to. I guess like you, I'll find out when I get them.

When I first talked to the Callaway Rep, they told me the flighted shafts were backordered up to 3 weeks. Gave me a little more time to think about the shaft and try some other options. Hopefully, it has been resolved and you don't have to wait 3 weeks. It was rough enough having to wait 5 days.

Re: Callaway X-20

Well, I'm going on 4 weeks and counting. Thought ordering them 2 weeks before my birthday would be plenty of time....now it's 2 weeks after. Haven't even shipped yet, argghhhh.

Re: Callaway X-20

Did you order the Project X 5.5 flighted? I ordered 5.0s following a tour van demo yesterday, and was told two weeks. They are now admitting to "months," perhaps as many as four, for the 5.5 flighted.

Re: Callaway X-20

Yes, Project X 5.5 flighted. I just called Callaway customer service venting after you told me 3-4 months. I kept my composure indicating that if something should take that long, I would expect them, as a quality vendor, to mention that to anyone placing an order (although I placed it through our local golf shop, who also had no idea of 'how long'). She was polite, asked where I ordered from, I told her that I ordered way back around April 12, about 2 weeks prior to my birthday thinking I'll be playing with them by then....and it's almost a month after my birthday and no word of shipping!! She called my dealer, and identified that they shipped that very day and I'll have them by Thursday!!

Re: Callaway X-20

Got my X-20 Tours that resulted from a Callaway Tour Van fitting. Very well pleased.

Couple of thoughts for what they are worth.

These are a switch from Taylor Made RAC OS, and I'm glad I got the Tours (which resulted from several suggestions on various boards). Project X Flighted 5.0 shafts. Based on hitting 100 balls tonight, am particularly pleased with the 7, 6, 5, and 4 irons. Dead straight almost every time. Felt like I lost a little distance in my 9 iron and pitching wedge, but that might just be the result of fairly dead range balls. Although they are billed as a "players club," they were quite forgiving. Was impressed that balls that I didn't hit on the screws still went fairly straight.

Only took eight days to get them after ordering. Was pleasantly surprised, given the multi month delays I'm hearing about for those waiting for the 5.5 Project X shafts. Based on my swing speed, I could have used the 5.5s, but I think they would be a little stiff for my 53 year old body.

The Project X 5.0 felt a little heavy after playing with a soft regular flex in my RACs, but consistency was greatly enhanced with a shaft that wasn't all over the place...

Re: Callaway X-20

Well, I finally got my X-20 Tours with the 5.5 flighted Project X shafts and now been using them for a while. The 5.5-flex are somewhat stiffer than I would have preferred, as the shafts are 20% more weight (thicker walls?) than my Nippon 950's (~120 gms vs 100 gms)...in hindsight, this 53-yr old (me too) should probably have gotten the 5.0 flex. I should have gone to greater lengths to get fitted, but that's my problem. Anyway, I've adjusted somewhat and am hitting them better....when I use the right tempo, wow, my iron shots are more boring and penetrating than my previous irons. I must say, I think it works out just like they describe....my longer irons go further than previous, but I don't seem to hit my shorter irons as far as my old irons....I guess due to the "flighting" of the shafts, which from what I've read the 9/PW are more stiff than the 3, 4-irons. Anyway....they do hit 'on target line' with less dispersion than my old irons. I'm starting to appreciate them more each time I play.

My son just got his Titleist 755's with Project X 6.0-flex shafts and he also like the flight.

Re: Callaway X-20

I openly admit that one of my favourite golf reviewers of old used to use that trick with his titles....but I found it to be an attention getter, and believe that these clubs deserve all the attention they can get. Are they thick on the top line?--Yes! Are they slightly over-priced?...Yes!.. Do they hit the ball well?...Yes! Are they a vast improvenment over many of Calloway's recent offerings?....Yes!
