Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
getting lessons never hurt, but i can tell you exactly what's happening and how to fix it( been there). you're getting your arms too far out in front causing you to come in too shallow because the hand can't catch up, not only do you have an open blade, but you are also hitting it thin (sh**ks, sort of).
the correction drill: normal set up, take your 8 iron and in slow motion, concentrat on rolling your right hand over the left, you want to feel like you have to let your left hand slow down and wait. now slowly pick up the swing speed.give it a try, it works. |

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
I think I went through something similar about 4 weeks ago (and last Sunday). Started out fine and then started shanking, shanking, shanking. I later found I was taking the club too far to the inside to start (I believe I was rolling my wrist over causing it) getting me stuck and causing me to come over the top b/c of the lose spin angle. Try concentrating on what your wrist are doing while doing 1/2 to 3/4 shots. Also take note of your divots to see what your swing path is. Once you get your confidence up, start taking full shots with the same mental picture in your head. This is what I did (although I was forced to do it on the course this past Sunday...the 3/4 shots) and it got me back on track to shooting a great back 9.

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
Last summer i started to shank heavily for no apparent reason. One day on the driving range i could feel like gold, hitting pure nice shots, the next day ill shank everything to the right.
During that same summer i got a bad backache which left me out of the fairways for long time, and it seemed to get worse when i was at the range, and then got better when not going to the range. So i went to a pro, and he found several minor flaws he corrected. Those correction did magic to my golf, my shots got alot better, i stopped duffing the balls as i had done forever it seems. So, take a lesson, they should be able to spot whatever is wrong.

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
hey man, watch those lessons from Rocco Mediate, he really gives some valid points, my biggest advice to you, eliminate your whole game to one or two swing thoughts, and work on them, so its setup, swing thought, and bang

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
Work on simple chip and pitch shots. This is a more condensed version of the entire swing. Once you get that feel back, go for some easy full swings with short and mid irons. It doesn't look that impressive on the range hitting half wedges, but if you start making good contact with those, the rest of the swing should work itself out. This is just a quick response without being able to see what you are doing. As Harvey Penick said, it's an aspirin not a cure.

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
Kind of on topic and kind of off.
I was thinking about something...probably due to my PGA Email about last chances to sign up. May is PGA of America's Free Lesson Month in conjunction with Golf Digest. The names of the participating professionals will be listed in the March or April issue of GD. The lessons are short about 10 mins and most professionals schedule 2-3 hours on the range where participants can either book ahead or they will simply fill in their books with people on the range. It might be a good way for many to get to know a couple local professionals and see if their style jives with your learning style/personality before paying anything. Just a thought. |

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
Got off of work a lil early yesterday.......thought about what mikey and pgonza said and I finnnally started hitting my normal shot again my high fade. I hit a few greens finnaly yesterday but I still havent got my power or confidence back......I got a pack of use pro v-1's and wow what difference a ball makes, was about too throw the ball behind the flag and pull it back about 8 or 9 inches, the ball also checked up nicely with my lob wedge.
Good thing I get a free year of Golf Digest for buying my black widows.......yeah be nice to find someone local thats on the same page about my swing as I am. |

Re: Totally Lost it/Looking for Coach
OFF TOPIC: With what JC was talking about with the free lesson month, I definitely recommend trying that out. I called one of the top pros in the area last year during free lesson month not expecting a whole lot, just figured I would get a quick 10 minute look at my swing and then a few pointers, but he stayed with me for about 45 minutes, watched me hit balls outside, brought me inside and put me on video...so I was very impressed to say the least. This pro normally charges 90 bucks per 45 minutes for lessons.
ON TOPIC: We all go through the "lost it" slumps every now and again. Seeing a pro might be in order, but from my own experience, here is what I think. You said you were hitting the ball good last week? Usually when we start hitting the ball good we like to start swinging harder and faster, and why wouldn't we? We're feeling it that day so lets try to get the ball out there fas far as possible right? It works great when your body is in rhythm and everything is working together, but it can get bent out of shape in a hurry the second your body gets a little quick or something like that. Might try going to the range and just taking some nice and smooth half swings to get the feeling of hitting the ball solid. I know from experience because I fight this it seems like every year. Seems I put the clubs up for the winter, when golf season comes around again I play like a pro for a month or two as I'm not expecting much from my swing, just going out trying to make contact then as I get more comfortable with my swing I start thinking I can swing faster and it just kills me. It's a real mental battle with this every year and I think I've all but overcome it and I've realized that 260 in the fairway is way better than 280 in trees. Maybe this is you and you do the same thing I do? Maybe not...hope it helps. |
