Re: Putter Ball Position
I'm not very conventional when I putt, open stance with the ball slightly forward and an inside to out stroke.

Re: Putter Ball Position
I like the ball just forward of center with little-to-no forward press.

Re: Putter Ball Position
forward in my stance, promotes the sweeping action, if you catch a putt heavy you either leave a nasty divot or skull your putt

Re: Putter Ball Position
I just go with whatever feels comfortable. I think I may have mine just a hair back from center and to get my putting motion started I do a slight forward press right before the actual stroke.

Re: Putter Ball Position
The putter is in line with the buckle of my belt. The ball is just to the left my putter head.

Re: Putter Ball Position
25% of the complete distance between dead center and my left heel. I'm attempting to strike the ball on the beginning of my upstroke.

Re: Putter Ball Position
I play the ball 2 balls off of my left heel. Like Zen, I am getting the ball on the upswing.

Re: Putter Ball Position
I play mine just ahead of center , with a very slightly open stance.

Re: Putter Ball Position
It was kind of a trick question because it depends on your stroke where your success will be.
If you are a Pelz putter...straight back and straight through, it really doesn't matter because you are on line at all times. The only thing that changes is the angle of attack by moving the ball (provided you are staying still). If you are more like Tiger...inside to square to inside, you MUST put the ball right in the center of your stance to avoid timing errors. A ball placed too far back will be pushed and a ball too far forward is pulled. Also, the putter is designed to impact the ball with the shaft vertical, not forward pressed. Some of the TOUR players have their shafts forward but they have also had their putter's loft changed so that they are still striking the ball with the proper effective loft for the speed they are playing. |

Re: Putter Ball Position
I always place the ball on the leading foot perpendicular to the ball of the foot with my line. Always seems to give me a true roll with virtually no bounce detected on moist greens.

Re: Putter Ball Position
I prefer my ball to be on the green, but sometimes I'll putt from the fringe too.
But seriously, should it not be placed such that the putter head catches it slightly on the up, to give the best roll? I would imagine that with putting being such a personal thing, this can vary from player to player.
