The Plane Truth for Golfers (Book)

I've been meaning for a while to write a review of this book, or at least get a thread started about it. I have to say, in terms of "big picture" swing information/advice, I think this is hands down the best golf book out there, and an absolute must read for all of us hackers aspiring to be better players.

For those of you who have not read it or don't know of it, this is anything but a nuts-and-bolts swing book. It doesn't go through the swing inch by inch, what this elbow or that toe or both ears should be doing when the club is 3, 7 or 22 inches past vertical in your backswing, etc. It gives general, but surely precise enough overviews of the two main swing theories/philosophies, the one plane and the two plane swing.

The introduction tries to give the reader an idea of which swing might be best for them based on body type, flexibility and strength, but also based on interesting factors like dancing ability (rhythm). The remainder of the book breaks down the various components of the swing (address, starting back, position at the top, etc.) for both swing types.

It's a fascinating concept and as I said before, one that I think has true merit. If nothing else, I think this book will give you a great foundation to use as a filter through which you can evaluate the billions of tips and advice we all read in golf magazines, and most importantly to know which tips and advice to ignore, which I think is just as important as to know which ones to follow.

I haven't gotten the DVD series, as I think the book gives plenty of information, though I actually am tempted.

So this was a meandering and not very precise or detailed review, but I would love to hear others' thoughts and/or experiences with this excellent book.

I think it is a very good illustration of two ways to swing a club.

Re: The Plane Truth for Golfers (Book)

I've been putting this book on hold for a while now. Ever since I read, The Only Golf Lesson You'll Ever Need, the swing plane has been at the center of my swing fixings. I think I'll pick it up sometime later this year - I've got a few books that I haven't cracked open yet, some are even golf related.

That's the one. I think I let a friend borrow it. I haven't seen him since we last played golf...I need to get it back to look up some info.

I'm reading the only golf lesson you'll ever need right now too, I think its getting me to a better thought process about my mechanics.

Re: The Plane Truth for Golfers (Book)

The Hank Haney book is excellent.

I prefer the McLean 8 step swing. The video is especially good.

I liked the Plane Truth. The take home point is that there are certain drills or tips that apply to certain swing types.

The LAWS of golf by Tomasi is very interesting by characterizing swings as Arc, Leverage and Width type of swings based upon body types. The Arc appears to fit the two plane and the Leverage appears to fit the one plane swing.

I never read a golf book before, but based on your recommendation I'll make this the first.

Re: The Plane Truth for Golfers (Book)

I don't have my book still, but can someone help me with this problem I've been thinking about. For the single plane swing, is it a different plane for each club? Or does every club swing on the same plane? I thought the shorter clubs (and wedges) swing more upright, but that means you need to practice a different plane for each club, right? Someone please simply this for me. Thanks!

Re: The Plane Truth for Golfers (Book)

I have the book and the dvd. I just don't get it.

I agree with Ti that the Mclean system is golden.

I wish I would have given him more credence in my developmental stage both teaching and learning the game.
