What is the correct amount of "connected"?

We were talking about this in another thread but I thought I'd open up the question a little bit more. It was said that I was getting disconnected in my swing and to try Vijay's towel drill. In trying that though I felt that my arms were so close to my body that I was unable to make any sort of swing. So the question is, what is the right amount of connected?

Re: What is the correct amount of "connected"?

you want to come from the inside enough for you to square the club, vijay has a very inside swing so he gets hooky from time to time, his driver is like 7* open or somethin like that, he gets nice and flat though which allows him to do this, just keep it inside and confortable

I'm the one who said that, the best way i can describe this is while you are in your normal set up, you will see the v shape between your forearms, chest, and hands. you should be able to feel the back of the upper arms on your chest. when you start the club back, keep the back of the arms, v shape and club position (do not cock the wrists yet) together until the club is almost parallel with the ground. at this time, the hands should start cocking and the natural movement should bring the club to the top.
once the club is parallel with the ground, don't even think about being conected, let it go on it's own. hope this helps.

look at some of these profiles, especially Jonathan Byrd and David Gosset
to the right is the archives. pay attention to their take-a-ways.

Re: What is the correct amount of "connected"?

Ok, so you should stay connected (triceps to chest) until the club is parallel to the ground and then raise the arms up to a point where the club shaft is parallel to the target line?

Re: What is the correct amount of "connected"?

your left tricep should remain connected thru-out the swing, and i don't mean tight, but comfortalbly. if you looked at the pros, they all have their differences, yet they all have many similarities, staying conected is a similarity.

Re: What is the correct amount of "connected"?

It should stay connected until the natural motion of the swing pulls it up. A simplistic view that has helped me explain it to several of my students.
