Bad back... stack and tilt?

I have big-time back problems that golf really aggravates. A thought came to mind today (in serious pain after playing 18 holes)... maybe stack and tilt would be less painful.

I've always had a big reverse C finish and an aggressive swing. I play well enough to not want to change, but I'm just putting myself through agony now. It's getting to the point where I can see I can't play 3+ days per week as I have in the past and surgery might actually be worth the risk.

Is stack and tilt a little easier on the lower back. It seems like it might be less stressful on that area. I have never even tried it.

I am no expert, but from some discussions I have heard, stack and tilt rather makes a bad back worse.

It might be worth a try given your current situation. As Putton mentioned I've heard some say that the stack & tilt might cause back problems due to the nature of the swing, but I've never heard anyone who uses it actually confirm that. I use sort of a modified stack & tilt. Most but not all of my weight stays forward. I used the textbook stack & tilt for a couple of months last summer but slightly modified it when I couldn't get rid of a case of the "lefts". The only problem I had was some initial temporary soreness on my left(front) side. It wasn't really localized and it went away after I'd been working with it for a week or so. It was simply due to me putting more stress on my front side than I'd been accustomed to. FWIW, I'm 53, about as flexible as your average 53 year old and I've never had any back problems due to golf in 40+ years of playing, regardless of how I was swinging it.

Re: Bad back... stack and tilt?

I've taken lessons from a couple guys that actually teach stack and tilt and according to them, if you do the "stack and tilt" right, it shouldn't be any worse and might actually be better for your back.

The problem is that a lot of people see the "stack and tilt" in the magazines and on you tube and try to do it on their own but what they think they are doing and what they actually are doing are two extremely different things.

Re: Bad back... stack and tilt?

I'm going to look for a video or a book this week. I played Monday and I'm still suffering. I'd rather quit playing than be doped up on opiates all the time.
