Can someone explain this to me?
I copied and pasted this from Yahoo's golf tip of the day...
In the Right Direction - Scott Sackett In putting, there are two primary variables, distance and direction. Of the two, direction is far more important for two reasons. First, the size of the hole is approximately three times the size of the ball, therefore allowing the ball to still drop in even if you are off-line by several inches. Second, if you can consistently hit the ball the correct distance, you will reduce the risk of three-putting. My question is this. I underlined the word "direction". I think he meant distance. Maybe I'm reading the rest of it wrong, but do you guys thinks this is a typo? If you want to read it, here's the link. Since it's the daily tiop, it will change tomorrow. |

Re: Can someone explain this to me?
Pelz did a thing in Golf Digest about this, he showed how direction was more important since you can get a ball to roll into the hole four different ways. He showed that you could have a ball fall into the center of the cup, hit off the back of the cup, fall in on the high side, or sneak in on the low side as long as the direction was good. He used a ramp to release the ball at four different speeds in the same direction to get the ball to fall in each of the four ways.
