Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

It dawned on me last night that my belly is getting in the way of a inside out swing. I tried something last night and I got a perfect draw on a few drives. I put my back foot a 1/2 foot behind my front foot. This enabled me to come from the inside on my down swing. Is this proper form or should I bend lower? I tried bending lower and it really wasn't working too well. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

Just to clarify: My right elbow was touching my belly on the downswing when I had a proper stance. By putting my right foot back it allowed my elbow to have free clearance on the downswing, thereby allowing me to get an inside out swing.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

There was an article in GOLF last month (or maybe the month before) about a tournament they have of all bug guys. There is a column along with that with tips for larger golfers. One of them I remember is it talked about splaying your feet out a bit, kind of like a duck, in your stance. Go to their website and see if you can find the article maybe?

Whatever it takes to get the desired result is correct.

Just sound like you are taking an exaggerated hook stance. If it works I don't see a problem with it.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

Rick Smith (the teaching pro) talks about us older guys who are not as flexible and maybe a little large around the midsection to move your right foot back in our stance in order to get more hip turn. I think I am reading your post correct that this is in essence what you are doing I will pull my back foot (right foot) back say midway of my left in order to get a better turn with a full swing.

Yes. This is exactly what I am doing. I was just wondering if this is proper form or I should be doing something different (leaning over more).

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

Read "The LAWs of Golf" by Tomasi. It covers 3 types of swings based upon body type:

Arc=Tall ectomorph
Leverage=Mesomorph
Width=Endomorph

http://www.golfwithtjtomasi.com/laws...aws_test_1.php

I am more of an Endo/Mesomorph.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

I got an ectomorph on that test. So what exactly does an arc swing mean?

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

i dunno, i'm a big guy, 5'8" 240 lbs, and i think i'm coming from too far inside. i get a lot of pushes, and slices(i think my club face stays open not out-in). and the worst, the push-slice. i tried putting my left foot back, didn't help me. my problem is the turn, my flexibility is poor because i'm fat and shoulder problems. but when i get that good turn my slices turn straight or even draw, but its soo difficult for me to make that turn. i just needa lose some weight and stretch.

Thanks for the links, it makes a lot of sense, I'll really give this a shot when all the ice and snow around here melts off... next year.

Leaning over more will ruin your balance and will almost certainly do you no good. However, you shouldn't feel that you need to change your swing much. If you setup for a swing in the direction you want the ball to start of in (to the right of the target for a righthander), then close the clubface so that it is pointing at the target, and make your normal swing (in the direction you want the ball to start of in) you will hit a draw, with your normal swing. It sounds like you are effectively doing something very close to that.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

As I was feeling my way through the process last night I discovered where the club head has to be in order to get ball to draw. Just to clarify, I need to have my clubface square to the target, not closed (to the left)?

Apparently I am a mesomorph...seems like I need to order the book to find out what all that means...

You set up shoulders, feet, hips etc. to the right of the target, and swing on that line, but your clubface is indeed square to the target.

In other words: You swing in the direction you want the ball to start of in, and you aim your club where you want the ball to end up. This last is sentence is true for fades, straight shots also.

This is a commonly accepted method to hit draws, fades etc.. It should not require you to drastically alter your swing. And it should work for golfers of all shapes and sizes, though there will be differences in their natural tendencies, setups etc.. If you hit the ball pretty straight with your normal swing, it shouldn't take major adjustments to curve the ball either way.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

Excellent linkage!
makes so much more sense now. i actually use the width swing, i just didn't know it. its weird, i feel like i'm only going halfway back, cuz i was so used to trying to get the club parallel at the top. but i hit it just as far if not further now because of better technique. its good to know that i'm supposed to get my hips outta the way sooner than i thought.

Re: Inside out swing for "thicker" frames

Thank you so much for the advice. When you discovered how to "purposely" fade or draw did you try to do it all the time? I have this thought in my mind that my next range session will be filled with me trying to replicate the draw. Did this happen to anyone else?

I don't see a big problem with closing your feet a little. Just don't overdo it and make sure your shoulders stay square.

I have a bigger frame, not from fat, but muscle. I open my left foot out a little, and keep my right square.

Yes, I too come from the inside and get a lot of push/slices. Ive tried the exaggerated closed stance proposed here and it makes it worse. Im tall and not overweight. Tight in chest/shoulder area from years of weights and injuries makes it difficult for me to get a good turn either way. Yoga and stretching are helping me now.
