Divot Repair

How are divots ultimately repaired where you play ? Is there some sort of sand/seed mixture involved ? I ask (in addition to because I don't know) because I think there is a difference between an unrepaired divot and one that's been filled with some sort of loose mixture. The former is not that hard to hit from, but the latter is like hitting out of a mini bunker and perhaps should be tagged as GUR.

Re: Divot Repair

At my course it is primarily down to the player to repair any divot that is taken, other than that the green keeping staff will use a sand/seed mix,for any other repairs.

Re: Divot Repair

Unfortunately, they're not at my home course, a muni. I pitched a fit when the sand jars were removed from the course's carts and no explanation, but I suspect they were more trouble to fill than someone wanted to put forth. Pet peeve of mine!!

Some courses in our area use just sand (most prominently), while a few use a sand/seed/fertilizer mixture. I have been lucky enough not to have to play from the sand filled divot. The hole is bad enough.

Re: Divot Repair

My home course uses sand/seed mix to fill divot holes. When the course is playing at a good pace, the rangers will have a tub in their carts, and will fill dead time that way.

We also have the advantage being a muni of being able to use minor lawbreakers (mostly DUI, some minor assault cases like bar fights, etc.) sentenced to public service within the county to do that. We have them available almost every day of the week, and they handle some of the cart cleaning, filling sand bottles on the carts, and will be sent out on the course to fill divot holes.

As I've said before Fourputt, I hope to never be in the situation to have to serve community service, however, if it were to happen, I'm going to request to be extradited to Littleton, CO

Re: Divot Repair

I've just moved courses and the new club use Fairway Mats and I have not seen any bad divot damage on the course this year.

At my old club, the Green-keepers didn't fill in old divots on a regular basis and I saw Gulls and Crows flipping repaired divots up looking for worms.

The new course is in better condition now than my old course was in parts of the season.

You have to play from a mat on the fairway??? Or is this something else? Just wondering as I've never heard of such a thing.

Yes, we carry a mat (almost like the insert on a Range Mat) about 18" x 6" and we place the ball on it on the fairway and semi-rough.
Saves the course for the season, and seeing the condition of Horsforth GC at the moment, its a good thing.

I'll take a photo and load it up later.

Ah... but it's only during the wet winter season that you use it? Colorado isn't wet enough to worry about that. I do less damage to the course now that I would in midsummer. Hard to take much of a divot when the ground is frozen.

Re: Divot Repair

It is the rainy season here...had an uphill lie today that will change how the hole is played from now on...by me and the rest of the club...

Sand and seed...also by grass transferring/patching...everything seems to grow back overnight around here anyway...

Sorry, I forgot to say that we use them in winter when the grass doesn't grow.
