Re: Relief and the Divot.

No. Although I might have issues with other rules, this one has happened to me so infrequently I just don't see the need to bother. Maybe if I hit the fairway more often it would interest me more.

You've hit the nail on the head - if it happens more than twice a year that's a lot - if it happens more than that one should just face it - golf's not for you!

It takes a lot of golfers a while to hit a fairway, now you want them to miss something that cant be seen from some tees, are you really being serious??

He must be - it's just like playing the Old Course!

I'm not serious about being able to avoid hitting a divot. Which is exactly why i am serious about a shot that lands in a divot not being perfect.

You can make a perfect strike but you cant always be sure of the outcome of it,anyone can get a bad bounce,or have to much back spin on the ball,it happens.

Re: Relief and the Divot.

I loved Ernie Els' comment a few years back when he won the Johnnie Walker Classic in Australia. In the last round on the 18th he hit his ball into a deepish divot. His only comment - " somebody told me I was in Nick Faldo's divot. I thought I was longer than Nick!"

In the US Open in '92 on the last hole he also pulled his tee shot way over onto another fairway. Pitched back to 18 into a divot - what did he do? He got up and down.

Yesterday in the Honda Classic he was in a divot but sitting nicely (once again th last hole) with quite a twitchy short iron in - not a word, not a grimace - just hit the ball to the fat part.

That's what the top guys do.

The divot was filled with sand.

Would you have enjoyed the shot? Sand or no sand ordinary mortals would have been shaking in their shoes.

I'm truly happy Ernie won. Who wouldn't be? I can't think of anyone on any tour with a higher likeability factor.....including Phil who, IMO, displays a "contrived" likeability.

Having said that, not only was the divot hole filled in, but Ernies ball was in front of it(nearer to the hole.) And, it's about time he DIDN't fold on the last hole! He needed that breakthrough and it was easy to tell that he was indeed relieved to have won. I look for lots of good things from Ernie NOW that he's exorcised his demons.

Re: Relief and the Divot.

Yeah but I think it would if someone like Ernie was on the last hole , hit a great drive and it ends up in a divot and they hit a poor shot and go into the water or lose the tournament . Yes they are pros but I don't know what the big deal is on lifting out of a divot . How is a divot going to repair and the grass re-grow quickly if people keep digging out of them ?

I know it's a rule but I don't agree with it .

So, you would prefer two divots that have to grow back rather than one?

Or the greenstaff could remove the area affected by the divots and returf if? Happens here often enough.
