Provisional ball question from a different pov.

I had written about a provisional ball I put into play in a thread in General talk.

What is the ruling if you know that your provie was picked up by an outside agency (i.e. Ground crew dude) while searching for the first ball?

I ended up dropping a ball from where I know the provie landed. I had previously identified the provie as mine before going in search of the original tee shot.

Re: Provisional ball question from a different pov.

You would have to go to that person and get the ball back....then drop where the ball was...

If you know the exact spot where the original ball lay, the ball should be replaced. If the original ball is not immediately recoverable, then another ball may be substituted. If the exact spot was not known, then you should drop a ball as closely as possible to the spot where your provisional ball lay.

After the round I'd talk to the course staff and let them know that they have a ball thief working for them. Anybody working on a golf course should know better than to just pick up any stray ball they come across.

I just realized your home course is about a mile west of Pinhurst CC in Denver. I was a member there in 1991.

Yep... that's it. The course is a much better facility now than it was in '91. Much more mature and much better irrigation system added since then. 2 holes (#4 and #5) modified, trees planted, tee boxes rebuilt, and just generally better conditioned. If you had played it then and saw it now, it's almost a totally different course.
