Tiger checking the grain before he putted out

I believe it was Saturday's round at Doral that Tiger missed a putt and swiped his putter on the green to check the grain in dismay/disgust. I didn't pay much attention to it until Johnny Miller pointed out that by the rules of golf he was not allowed to check the grain until he putted out. I'm surprised that no one at home called in to get him penalized. Did anyone catch that or know if what Tiger did was reviewed by the PGA?

What he did was rake the putt in which rubbed turf as he raked the putter across. It couldn't be considered an issue because the ball was probably 10 inches from the hole. You know Johnny???????? Always wanting to add his two cents to anything.

Geaux Mizzou Tigers, beat Arkansas. That will show those want to be imposters

I didn't think it was big issue either, but by the letter of the law I thought Johnny had opened a big can of worms.

But the letter of the law states intent and you could tell there was no intent only frustration at the putt missing the mark again. Sometimes I like Johnny and used to pull for him back in the days but he can be full of it sometimes.

Re: Tiger checking the grain before he putted out

I'm always surprised by the lift, clean and place thing. The rules in the UK generally state that you should place the ball within six inches of where it originally lay. As an aside, I recommend never playing with women if you're playing this rule, because they've all been told by their husbands that six inches is about this far: <.............................................>. If you're playing with men, then you can move it an arm's length, without fear of censure.

Having said that, and I don't know what the regs on tour say about this, but I reckon Tiger was moving his ball a good foot or so when they were playing this (maybe it's just cos I'm watching on widescreen though :cough: )

This topic had to do with the green and putting and not lift, clean and place. I believe on lift, clean and place it is a where a person can evade casual water no closer to the hole. Not really sure what the limits of that are, if any.

Well, I read it as Tiger breaking the rules or otherwise, so I'm sorry if I hijacked the thread.

No problem as I just assumed you missed what he was asking. I doubt very seriously you'll find Tiger breaking the rules. He knows them well and how to use them the same as Phil and some of the others.

You mean Phil would use the rules to his advantage?

Phil probably moreso than any others. He seems to land near sprinkler heads in the rough so often I lost count. Amazing how he always gets into the short grass from a buried lie in the rough.

Not quite. LCP is an allowed local rule for use when bad conditions warrant. Casual water can be avoided any time it is present. See rule 25,

True and thanks for the correction. Do you know what the standard placement distance is for LCP? Not really sure if I've ever read or heard what it was before.
