Eric Axley....not DQ'd, paying attention !!

Last week Stewart Cink got DQ'd for stepping in bunker to hit a ball on the grass ledge, even though he stepped out and hit it from the grass and into another bunker down the fairway....then his caddy raked the bunker and he was supposed to have assessed himself a penalty for 'testing the conditions'.

Just now at the Shell Houston Open, Eric Axley is on some tuft of grass peninsula next to a fairway bunker, hits it while standing in the bunker, and the announer says "lets' hope it doesn't go in another bunker, but if it does, lets hope he was paying attention last week"....sure enough, it goes in the greenside bunker. Then with excitement, they focus on Axley and his caddy, who walk across the bunker and don't rake it. The announcer says, something like this is ridiculous, I know its the rules, but leaving the bunker unraked for the next group....ahem. Then Axley asks Michelson's caddy to rake the bunker....nice way of avoiding the penalty.

Now don't you think if you can get out of a sticky situation that easily (Michelson's caddy did the same thing Axley's caddy could have done, but since Phil wasn't in a bunker (cough, went in the water), he's not 'testing the conditions', even though he's doing exactly the same actions.

Time to get rid of that rule.

Yea, it's even more embarassing in public. I wanted to add that little bit but the 'edit' time had expired.

The Cink DQ has got all Pro's wondering.
Didn't Natalie Gulbus ask for an Official Ruling at the Evian to make sure that her caddie could Rake the fairway bunker she had just hit from into a greenside bunker?

Always wise if you're unsure to ask an official, but there is an Exception to the Rule if you have just played from a hazard

Re: Eric Axley....not DQ'd, paying attention !!

Curious....if you ask an official and he gives you the wrong advice for whatever reason (brain-fart on his part that day) and then it's later found that the official's recommended path was wrong..... is the player still at fault and penalized?

Didn't something like this happen at the British Open a few years ago....I remember some questions as to the integrity of an official because of some questionable ruling or some such.

34-2/2 Referee Authorizes Player to Infringe a Rule

Q. In error, a referee authorized a player to infringe a Rule of Golf. Is the player absolved from penalty in such a case?

A. Yes. Under Rule 34-2, a referee’s decision is final, whether or not the decision is correct.
